Why Sachin Tendulkar decided to skip Sri Lanka tour

New Delhi, July 11: Sachin Tendulkar will not be taking field when India play Sri Lanka later this month as he has opted out of the series. And the reason for this is that he wanted to spend some quality time with his children.

"I requested BCCI that I wanted to spend time with my family. This is the time for school holidays. If I had decided to go to Sri Lanka, I would have started my preparation by now. But I wanted to spend some quality time with my children since after this I would be playing continuously for next 10 months," he said.

"Holidays are different from spending time during school days or on weekends."

A doting and protective father that he has been, Tendulkar said that he would never force his son Arjun or daughter Sara and let them choose their preferred careers.

Arjun has recently been selected for the Mumbai U-14 side after string of good performances in Mumbai school circuit.

"Arjun is passionate about cricket and Sara is passionate about medicine. But every individual is different. I want to guide them and support them. I don't want to force them and will like them to choose their fields. I will only have good wishes for them and tell them to enjoy whatever they do," he said.

Tendulkar also said that to be on top one has to be "madly in love" with cricket.

Asked how elite sportspersons guard themselves from various aspects like pressure and injuries, Tendulkar said ,"I can answer from a cricketer's point of view. You have got to be madly in love with cricket. Before you lay a foundation on the cricket field, there should be a solid foundation in your heart and you start building on that."

"After that as you start playing more and more matches, you learn how to score runs and how to take wickets," Tendulkar said in an interview to a sports channel.

The 39-year-old Tendulkar also stressed that though he is now a Member of Parliament his focus would remain on cricket.

"I consider it as an honour as I have been nominated by the president of India. I have been nominated for my contribution to cricket. I am a cricketer and I will be focussed on my game."

He said that he will certainly speak and give his opinion on various issues "when the time is right."

"Overnight, I cannot bring any change and it also involves a lot of things. It's not right also," he explained.

Malabar, Jun 30: I-League club Gokulam Kerala's former assistant manager Muhammad Alloush on Monday died due to COVID-19. He was 44.

Alloush, who was with the football club in its inaugural season, was working as technical director at Egyptian club Tanta SC at the time of his demise.

Alloush's mother had also succumbed due to the deadly virus earlier.

"We're deeply saddened by the death of our former assistant manager Muhammad Alloush, aged 44, after contracting Covid_19. The thoughts of everybody at Gokulam Kerala Football Club are with Alloush's family and friends at this sad time. Rest in peace, Alloush," Gokulam Kerala FC tweeted.

Meanwhile, with a spike of 18,522 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, India's coronavirus count stands at 5,66,840, said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry, 418 deaths due to COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours. The number of deaths in the country now stands at 16,893.

Silverstone, Aug 2: Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton on Sunday won his seventh British Grand Prix title after a dramatic last-lap at the Silverstone Circuit.

Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas were at the first and second spot respectively until tyre drama struck.

Second-placed man Bottas was the first to suffer as his tyre deflated on lap 50, resulting in 11th place finish. Hamilton also suffered a similar issue before the final few seconds of the race.

However, with Max Verstappen having opted to pit a few laps from the end to try and claim the fastest lap, Hamilton had enough time in hand to just cross the line first, five seconds ahead of Verstappen and the third-placed Ferrari of Charles Leclerc.

McLaren's Carlos Sainz had been set to finish fourth, but his own last lap tyre issue saw him eventually come home P13, allowing Renault's Daniel Ricciardo to claim fourth, following a late pass on the sister McLaren of Lando Norris.

Renault's Esteban Ocon finished sixth, having enjoyed a race-long battle with Lance Stroll's Racing Point, with Pierre Gasly having enjoyed a fine race to finish seventh for AlphaTauri.

Alex Albon finished eighth for Red Bull, having recovered from a lap 1 tussle with the Haas of Kevin Magnussen that saw him fall to last, while Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel rounded out the top 10, Vettel holding off a late charge form the recovering Mercedes of Bottas.

Dhaka, Jun 20: Former Bangladesh skipper Mashrafe Mortaza on Saturday tested positive for coronavirus.

The skipper had gone for a coronavirus Test last week, and now his reports have come back as positive, ESPNCricinfo reported.

As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, it is not known how Mortaza contracted the virus.

Mashrafe, also a member of the parliament from Narail 2 constituency, had stepped down as the ODI captain of the country in March this year.

Covid-19 cases have crossed 1,00,000 mark in Bangladesh and the government is now planning area-wise lockdown.

Bangladesh was slated to face Sri Lanka in July in a three-Test series and the side would have later hosted New Zealand in August, but both series look unlikely now.

The Asia Cup, scheduled for September, is also uncertain due to the coronavirus.
