WI march into Super Eights

Ireland’s worst fears came true as their remote hopes of qualifying to the Super Eight stage were washed away after torrential downpour forced the abandonment of their shootout against the West Indies here at the R Premadasa Stadium on Monday night.

Coming into Group B’s final encounter with a loss each at the hands of Australia, it was a must win match for both the West Indies and Ireland to progress to the next stage. A washout, however, wasn’t in the best interests of Ireland whose net run-rate of -2.09 was lower than West Indies’ -1.85. As a result, Darren Sammy’s men joined Sri Lanka and England in Group B of the Super Eights with New Zealand’s qualification as the fourth team being only a formality now.

For the record, Ireland posted 129/6 in 19 overs after two rain delays had shaved off two overs from the contest. Given West Indies’ batting fire-power, the target wasn’t going to be a difficult one but the rain that resumed immediately after Ireland’s innings ensured no further play.

With dark clouds hovering over the stadium, the rain-threat was always around. Though Sammy had maintained that they were a side who preferred to set the target rather than chase it, he opted to bowl first in order to give the West Indies a better chance to win if Duckworth/Lewis method were to come into play. The all-rounder didn’t have wait too long to stand vindicated as the first spell of rains arrived at the completion of the fifth over at which stage Ireland were 33 for the loss of their skipper William Porterfield. The southpaw once again fell for a first-ball duck, as Fidel Edwards’ full-length scorcher broke through his defences.

The umpires – Asad Rauf and Kumar Dharmasena – rescheduled the start at 8.20 pm but no sooner the covers had come off than it began to rain again, forcing a further postponement. The proceedings began at 8.45 pm by which time 55 minutes of play had been lost but fortunately only two overs were reduced making it a 19-over-a-side affair.

Sunil Narine got rid of Ed Joyce after the resumption, bowling the southpaw around his legs after which Niall O’Brien and Gary Wilson came up with some lusty hits to add some meat Ireland’s innings. Chris Gayle didn’t get a chance to swing his bat but the southpaw played his part with the ball. The off-spinner dismissed both N O’Brien and Wilson and celebrated each success with his own version of Irish ‘chicken dance’ to entertain the sparse gathering.

Notwithstanding a few slogged-sixes towards the end, Irish couldn’t manage a total that would have tested the batting might of the Windies but they rather would have preferred to go down fighting than watch helplessly the match being rained off.

Rome, Jan 19: India's star wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Ravi Kumar Dahiya kicked off the Olympic year in style, winning a gold medal each in their respective weight categories at the Rome Ranking Series here.

The 25-year-old Bajrang staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 4-3 win against USA's Jordan Michael Oliver in the summit showdown of the 65kg freestyle category.

Ravi, who competed in the 61kg category instead of his regular 57kg, also bagged gold after getting the better of Kazakhstan's Nurbolat Abdualiyev 12-2 in his final bout late on Saturday night.

The 23-year-old from Sonepat had made the final round after securing impressive wins over Moldova's Alexaandru Chirtoaca and Kazakhstan's Nurislam Sanayev.

Up against one of India's biggest medal prospects in the Tokyo Olympics, Oliver conceded that it was not his night against Bajrang.

The American lauded the competitive spirit of Bajrang.

"Wasn't my night… but I got a lot of work to do to be where I want to be! Hats off to @BajrangPunia dude is heck of a competitor! Until next time my friend," the American tweeted.

Bajrang had to sweat it out in the first round against Zain Allen Retherford of the USA before prevailing 5-4.

In the quarterfinal, the ace Indian wrestler went past another American Joseph Christopher Mc Kenna 4-2, before getting the better of Vasyl Shuptar of Ukraine 6-4 in the semi-finals.

However, it was curtains for Jitender in the 74kg and world championship silver medallist Deepak Punia in the 86kg category.

Jitender won his first bout against Denys Pavlov of Ukraine 10-1 before going down in the quarterfinals against Turkey's Soner Demirtas 4-0.

Jitender got a chance to fight in the repechage after Demirtas entered the final, but the Indian wasted the opportunity, losing 2-9 to Daniyar Kaisanov of Kazakhstan.

In the 86kg category, Deepak crashed out in the opening round, losing 1-11 to Ethan Adrian Ramos of Puerto Rico.

Mumbai, Feb 12: Former Indian greats Kapil Dev and Mohammad Azharuddin have been left disappointed by the behaviour of the Under-19 team after the World Cup final where they were involved in an altercation with their Bangladeshi counterparts.

After Bangladesh won the final beating India by three wickets (via DLS) at the Senwes Park on Sunday, the players of the two teams were seen engaging in an exchange of words and even some pushing and shoving on the field.

"I would like to see the board (BCCI) take some strict action against the players to set an example. Cricket is not about abusing the opponent. I am sure there is enough reason for these youngsters to be dealt with firmly by BCCI," Kapil was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

"I welcome aggression, nothing wrong in it. But it has to be controlled aggression. You can't cross the line of decency in the name of being competitive. I would say it was unacceptable that youngsters put up such an obnoxious display on the cricket field," he added.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has sanctioned five players, including three from Bangladesh -- Towhid Hridoy, Shamim Hossain and Rakibul Hasan --and two from India --Akash Singh and Ravi Bishnoi for the scuffle.

Azharuddin also reiterated what Kapil said, insisting that players need to be disciplined.

"I would take action against the errant Under 19 players, but I also want to know what role has the support staff played in educating these youngsters. Act now before it is too late. The players have to be disciplined," Azharuddin said.

Earlier, Bishan Singh Bedi has lashed out at the Priyam Garg-led team, saying their behaviour was disgusting and disgraceful.

"You bat, bowl and field badlyhappens, but there's no excuse for behaving badly. The behaviour was disgusting and most disgraceful. The innocence of that age was not visible at all," Bedi told Mid Day.

Bedi, who represented India in 67 Tests and 10 ODIs, said the behaviour of the Bangladesh cricketers is not our problem.

"Look, what Bangladesh do is their problem, what our boys do is our problem. You could see that there was abusive language used," he said.
