Yuvraj, Harbhajan make a comeback in Test cricket

After undergoing treatment for cancer and making a fairytale comeback in the World T20, Yuvraj Singh has made a dramatic comeback into the Indian Test team for the first two Tests against England.

The newly-appointed selection committee, led by Sandeep Patil, met at the BCCI headquarters on Monday to pick a 15-member squad for the first two matches of the four-Test series against England, starting November 15.

The dashing left-hander proved his appetite for the longer format with a double century in the Duleep Trophy when he smashed an unbeaten 208 last month for North Zone in a match against Central.

India captain MS Dhoni had recently said that Yuvraj's Test selection depended on how exactly the southpaw manages to prove his match fitness and Yuvraj seems to have done that fine, by first playing the Duleep Trophy, then for India 'A' against England.

Yuvraj enters the Indian team at the expense of another left-hander Suresh Raina, who had been part of the team that played against New Zealand at home in September.

In fact, Yuvraj and Raina playing for India 'A' against the visiting England side had been billed as a contest to decide who makes it to the Test team as the Number 6 batsman. Yuvraj's half-century and a five-wicket haul seemed to have turned the tide in his favour.

On the other hand Harbhajan Singh too made a return in the Test team. He had played eight Tests, taken 29 wickets against it at home with five wickets in an innings twice at Mohali and Ahmedabad in the 2001-02 series.

The injury scares to opener Virender Sehwag and pacer Zaheer Khan were not serious to spoil their Test preparations. Opening batsman, Murali Vijay, was included as well after a good start to the domestic season.

Opening for Delhi in the Ranji clash against Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, Sehwag suffered a cut on his right index finger but later came out to bat at No. 6 to give an indication that the injury is a minor one and he will be fit for the first Test.

Similarly, Zaheer, who picked a wicket with the new ball in Mumbai's Ranji game against Railways, pulled out of the attack post tea and walked back to the dressing room after a brief chat with teammates Sachin Tendulkar and Ajit Agarkar.

Pacer Ishant Sharma, who has been blowing hot and cold in the domestic circuit, has also been included in the Indian Test squad as the selectors opted for a fresh change.

Indian Test Squad:

MS Dhoni (Capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravichandran Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Pragyan Ojha, Ajinkya Rahane, Harbhajan Singh, Ishant Sharma, Murali Vijay, Zaheer Khan.

Islamabad, Jun 23: Seven more Pakistan cricketers, including Muhammad Hafeez and Wahab Riaz, selected for the tour of England have tested positive for COVID-19, taking the total to 10, the PCB revealed on Tuesday.

The seven who tested positive on Tuesday are Kashif Bhatti, Muhammad Hasnain, Fakhar Zaman, Muhammad Rizwan, Imran Khan, Hafeez and Riaz. Shadab Khan, Haider Ali and Haris Rauf had returned positive tests on Monday.

“It is not a great situation to be in and what it shows is these are 10 fit and young athletes...if it can happen to players it can happen to anyone,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO, Wasim Khan told a media conference.

He said a support staff member, masseur Malang Ali, had also tested positive for COVID-19.

Khan said that the players and officials would now assemble in Lahore and another round of tests would be carried out on June 25 and a revised squad would be announced the next day.

The squad has to leave on June 28 for the series scheduled to be held next month, he said.

“It is a matter of concern but we shouldn’t panic at this time as we have time on our hands,” Khan said.

He said the players and officials would be retested on reaching England.

Jan 30: Three days after Los Angeles basketball great Kobe Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter and seven others perished in a helicopter crash, his wife, Vanessa, broke her silence with an Instagram message saying she was “completely devastated” by their loss.

The social media text was posted alongside a recent family photo of Kobe and Vanessa Bryant with all four of their daughters - Gianna, who died with her father, along with the couple’s eldest, Natalia, 17, 3-year-old Bianka, and the youngest, Capri, born in June 2019.

Kobe Bryant and the couple’s second daughter, knicknamed Gigi, died on Sunday when the helicopter they were flying in en route to the Mamba Sports Academy for a girl’s basketball tournament crashed in foggy weather on a hillside northwest of Los Angeles.

Gianna Bryant was a member of the Mamba team due to compete that day. Her father, who retired from the National Basketball Association in 2016 after 20 years with the Los Angeles Lakers, was the coach of his daughter’s team. ]

The pilot and six more passengers were also killed - two other 13-year-old girls involved in the tournament, three of their parents and another coach. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The death of Bryant, 41, an 18-time NBA all-star, five-time Lakers champion and one of the world’s most admired sports figures, unleashed an outpouring of grief and tributes from fans, fellow athletes and politicians around the globe.

“My girls and I want to thank the millions of people who’ve shown support and love during this horrific time,” Vanessa Bryant, 37, a former model, wrote on her Instagram account.

“We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe — the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna — a loving, thoughtful, and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka, and Capri,” she added.

The message goes on to say: “We are also devastated for the families who lost their loved ones on Sunday, and we share in their grief intimately. There aren’t enough words to describe our pain right now.

“I take comfort in knowing that Kobe and Gigi both knew that they were so deeply loved. We were so incredibly blessed to have them in our lives. I wish they were here with us forever. They were our beautiful blessings taken from us too soon.”

She directed anyone wishing to “further Kobe and Gianna’s legacy in youth sports” to visit the site MambaSports Foundation.org.

There has been no word yet on funeral arrangements.
