Beating Kramnik at Bonn was important for Viswanathan Anand

October 28, 2013

Beating_KramnikNew Delhi, Oct 28: He is known to be composure personified even under immense pressure and Viswanathan Anand, who is gearing up to defend his world title next month, gave ample proof of it in the 2008 edition against Vladimir Kramnik when he outwitted the celebrated Russian to clinch his third World Championship.

Although he had won two world titles in knockout and tournament formats, Anand still had to win the world championship in a match.

The opportunity came after he won the championship in a tournament format in 2007 at Mexico City, setting the stage for a much-awaited clash against Vladimir Kramnik of Russia at Bonn in 2008.

The big match was designed to give Kramnik a second chance to win the World Championship he had unceremoniously lost in the preceding match tournament.

As part of the contract signed to reunite the chess world, Kramnik was assured of this match against the winner of Mexico match-tournament convincingly won by Anand.

More than the Mexico victory, that put Anand firmly on the top of chess world, some were already looking at the match in Bonn a year before it was to happen.

As early as the final press conference at Mexico a question popped up at Anand, "Are you ready for your match with Kramnik?"

"I've just won the world title, can you give me five minutes?" replied Anand.

Although a World champion in Knockout and Round-Robin format in 2000 and 2007 respectively, Anand had yet to win a World Championship in match format.

One-on-one battles are more than chess itself. They are often a clash of personalities and nerves.

Many believed Kramnik would be much better in matches as he had beaten the 'invincible Gary Kasparov' in 2000 in the Braingames World Championship clash and had followed it with another title triumph over Peter Leko of Hungary in 2004 before beating Bulgarian Veselin Topalov in 2006.

Anand, on the other hand, had never won the final match till then. In 1991, he lost to Anatoly Karpov of Russia in the quarterfinals, in 1995 the Indian went down to Kasparov and then in 1998 again he lost to Karpov.

The last two losses came in the final matches.

The Chess World had been split when Kasparov and Kramnik did not take part in the knockout World Championships.

FIDE succeeded in the reunification process but by then Kasparov had announced his retirement, leaving Kramnik as the big fish to join the fray.

It started with a match against Topalov in 2006 at Elista in which Kramnik came up triumphant against all odds.

Winning the first two games, Kramnik took a huge 2-0 lead in the 12-game match and then Silvio Danailov, Topalov's manager, threw a salvo at the Russian saying his frequent visits to the toilet were suspicious.

The appeals committee agreed to have a common toilet for both players but Kramnik refused to play. What followed was huge drama during which Kramnik did not come for the fifth game and forfeited.

When the match continued, Kramnik's two-point lead became 3-2 and he finally won the match only in tiebreaker.

Kramnik showcased steely nerves under huge pressure. And as part of the reunification process he was awarded the match against Anand even though he had finished second in Mexico.

The match at Bonn started with a couple of draws and then Anand simply rolled over Kramnik winning the third, fifth and the sixth game to take a three points lead.

A loss in the 10th game did not take away anything as Anand sealed the victory by drawing the 11th game to win by 6.5-4.5 margin.

"Kramnik is very tough in matches simply because he does not lose very much. In tournaments, there is a difference. If you beat others and you have a dynamic style, you go ahead," Anand had said.

"But in a match, if you can't beat Kramnik, you are stuck with him. So in that sense, beating him in a match is a big achievement."

The world champion had passed the toughest challenge in style. He had proved his detractors wrong and had taken on a new journey that would see him winning the next two matches as well.

New Delhi, Jun 13: West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has said that wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni is the biggest superstar in cricket and is one of the easiest guys to interact with.

Bravo was doing an Instagram live chat with former Zimbabwe pacer Pommie Mbangwa and it was then that the all-rounder was asked to talk about his stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

"I think a lot of credit for CSK's success has to be given to Dhoni and Fleming, obviously the owners, they trust both Fleming and Dhoni, so there is no outside interference when it comes to decision making, both are very big students of the game, players love MS and it's an environment and franchise that allows you to be you," Bravo told Mbangwa during the chat.

"MS Dhoni is the biggest superstar in cricket and in our team. He was one of the easiest people to interact with, outside of the cricket field, he is like playing video games, his door is open at all times, whenever you talk about the biggest superstar and then you think a person like Dhoni is the most humble of them all. CSK is a special team and we have the most loyal fans," he added.

Bravo has been with the CSK since 2011. He has played a total of 104 matches for the franchise, picking up 121 wickets.

The all-rounder has also managed to win the Purple Cap (most wickets in IPL) two times (2013 and 2015).

CSK has won the IPL thrice (2010, 2011 and 2018) and all the titles have come under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

Thirty-eight-year-old Dhoni has been currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the high-profile game.

This year, Dhoni did not find a place for himself in the BCCI's centrally contracted players list.

The board had released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.

Dhoni is the only captain to win all major ICC trophies (50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy).

Under his leadership, India also managed to attain the number one ranking in Test cricket.

He would have been leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) if the Indian Premier League (IPL) had commenced from March 29.

However, the tournament has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kolkata, Jul 16: BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday went into home quarantine after his elder brother and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint secretary Snehasish Ganguly tested positive for Covid-19.

Snehasish, a former Bengal first-class player, has been admitted to the Belle Vue hospital in Kolkata after his COVID report came positive.

"He was suffering from fever for the last few days and his test report came positive today. He's been admitted to Belle Vue Hospital," a CAB official said.

"The reports arrived late in the evening. As per health protocols, even Sourav will have to be in home quarantine for a stipulated period," a source close to the BCCI President added.

Snehasish had shifted to their ancestral house, where Sourav is based, in Behala after his wife and in-laws at his Mominpur residence tested positive for the dreaded virus.

The former India captain was, however, unavailable for a comment on the development.

Recently, during an interview to India Today, Sourav had spoken about how life around him has changed, making people more vulnerable.

"My brother visits our factories everyday and he is more at risk," the former batting star had said

Indore, Jan 8:  India skipper Virat Kohli has added yet another feather to his cap by becoming the fastest player to score 1,000 runs in T20I cricket as a captain. Kohli played an unbeaten knock of 30 during India''s seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second T20I of the ongoing three-match series on Tuesday evening.

Kohli achieved the milestone of scoring 1,000 runs as captain in his 30th T20I inning. He is the second Indian and sixth overall after MS Dhoni to have achieved the feat. Dhoni had scored 1112 runs in 62 T20I games as captain.

Faf du Plessis (1273 runs from 40 games), Kane Williamson (1083 runs in 39 games), Eoin Morgan (1013 runs in 43 games) and Ireland''s William Porterfield (1002 runs in 56 games) are other captains on the list.

During India''s emphatic victory at the Holkar Stadium, Kohli also surpassed team-mate Rohit Sharma, who has been rested for the series, as the top run-getter in the T20Is. Kohli now has 2663 runs from 71 innings.

Both had finished 2019 as joint top-scorers in T20Is, with 2633 runs each.

India, already with an unassailable lead of 1-0 in the series, will now face Sri Lanka in the final T20I on Friday in Pune. The first match between the two teams was called off without a ball being bowled due to wet patches on the pitch in Guwahati last Sunday.
