Kuala Lumpur, Aug 14: In the wake of pressure from minority Hindu community of Malaysia, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad today said that his government is not keen for Indian Islamic preacher Dr Zakir Naik to be in the country, but added it is hard-pressed to deport him elsewhere as “many countries” will not accept him.

"So he's here today, but if any country wants to have him, they are welcome," Mahathir said, as demand by the Hindus of Malaysia for Dr Naik's deportation from country increased.

Dr Naik in a recent talk had reported taunted Hindus in Malaysia for being more loyal to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi than their own premier.

Asked about this, Mahathir said: "You can ask them (Hindus) la, why do you ask me? How would I know?"

Human Resource Minister M Kula Segaran, who is a senior Hindu politician, has called for action against Dr Naik while the National Patriots Association (Patriot) on Wednesday took the preacher to task for allegedly questioning the loyalty of Malaysian Hindus to the country and saying China mistreated Uyghur Muslims.

“Questioning the loyalty of the Malaysian Hindus shows Zakir is ignorant, dishonest and has an ulterior motive and a hidden agenda," Patriot president Datuk Mohamed Arshad Raji said in a statement.

He also said that any sensitive issue on the Uyghur Muslims is best left to the Foreign Ministry.

"It is not for Dr Naik to instigate the uninformed public, and arouse hatred and animosity towards China, especially at a time when Malaysia's relations with China are improving. Furthermore, trade and infrastructure investment are also at stake. “Patriot would like to see Zakir Naik shut up now,” he said.

Government of India has made a formal request for the extradition of Dr Naik. In June this year, the External Affairs Ministry said it would "continue to pursue the matter with Malaysia."

Lucknow, Feb 4: Even as anti-NRC protests continue to rage across the country, the Lucknow University has queered the pitch by demanding citizenship proof from RTI applicants.

The Lucknow University (LU) refused to provide the information sought by the people who filed the Right to Information (RTI) unless they furnished the proof that they were Indian citizens.

Alok Chantia, one of the RTI applicants who was refused information by the varsity, said that he had lodged a complaint with the vice-chancellor of the varsity but even then he could not get the desired information.

"It is shocking how the university has twisted the RTI law as per its whims and fancy. It does not have any authority to do so," said the RTI applicant.

Chantia, also a faculty member at a degree college here, had sought details of appointment of teachers for self-financed courses and their pay scale.

"It is possible that some applicants who may not be familiar with the provisions of the RTI, may have furnished proof of their citizenship to the varsity to get the information but that cannot become a rule," he pointed out.

When contacted, university officials admitted that such a practice had been going on in the varsity for the past few years.

"This practice started during the tenure of the former vice-chancellor S.P. Singh and still continues," said a senior varsity official.

Bengaluru, Jun 28: Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah asked the Karnataka government to release White Paper over the state of healthcare system and the government's preparedness to address COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that the State Government to come clean on the charges of misappropriation of large sums of funds in the name of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

"People are extremely worried about the state of our healthcare system and the government's preparedness to address pandemic. It is the responsibility of Karnataka Chief Minister to clear the doubts and reduce the panic among people. I urge the government to #ReleaseWhitePaper about the same," the Congress leader tweeted.

Siddaramaiah said that the Chief Minister should let people know about the amount of money already spent to improve healthcare facilities, the number of beds and ventilators increased and about the supply of PPE kits to COVID-19 warriors.

"Karnataka Chief Minister should also reveal the contribution of PMO India to our state. Has Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa demanded anything from Narendra Modi? How much of PM CARES Fund is spent for Karnataka's healthcare?" he asked in another tweet.

He went on to say that PMO India and Chief Minister of Karnataka "wasted crucial time during lockdown."

"The purpose of lockdown was to fill the gaps in health care system. But they just widened it by frequently changing the protocols and by not doing adequate tests," he said.

"Karnataka Chief Minister and other departments have failed to answer my multiple queries regarding the actions taken. As a leader of opposition, it is my right to question the government on behalf of people. Deliberate act of denying information is a breach of privilege. Government hospitals have reached its capacity and private hospitals are not ready to treat patients at capped prices," he wrote.

Siddaramaiah said that the Karnataka Chief Minister should either convince private players or take action against them, and added, "Not doing both is like pushing people off the cliff."

He tweeted, "The testing rates per day have come down in last 15 days even when the cases are rising. What is stopping the government from increasing the testing? The government is putting people at risk by not testing adequately."

Further attacking the state government, he wrote, "Our state needs 9000 ventilators, but we have only 1500, PMO India has sent 90 to us. Is this a joke to Karnataka Chief Minister and PMO India? #ReleaseWhitePaper about the ways that they plan to increase ventilators."
