Bengaluru, Apr 14: The threat of rebellion looms large over the ruling Congress even as the party is finalizing candidates for the May 12 Assembly polls.

On Saturday, senior leader P Ramesh was teary-eyed while announcing his decision to contest the polls from CV Raman Nagar constituency as a JD(S) candidate. He had been nursing the constituency and was hopeful of getting the ticket. "This is not Indira Gandhi's Congress. There's a Tughlaq's rule, and Siddaramaiah himself is Tughlaq. He will be responsible for the Congress' defeat," Ramesh told reporters.

Ramesh, who had unsuccessfully contested as the Congress candidate from CV Raman Nagar in the previous election, said Siddaramaiah had asked him to give up his candidature to make way for PWD Minister H C Mahadevappa. "I have helped nearly 16,000 people get jobs. I have done everything with my own money. But those taking decisions sitting in air-conditioned rooms are unaware of the ground realities. The situation is such that even Rahul Gandhi has to listen to whatever Siddaramaiah says."

It is now learnt that the JD(S) is trying to rope in another disgruntled Congress leader B Prasanna Kumar if he did not get the ticket to contest from Pulikeshi Nagar. The Congress is keen on fielding sitting MLA Akhanda Srinivas Murthy, who recently jumped ship from the JD(S). Kumar had lost to Murthy in the previous election.

'Save Congress' protest

Scores of block-level party workers from the Padmanabhanagar Assembly constituency staged a 'Save Congress' protest outside the party's headquarters on Saturday. Their grouse was that the party had finalized the Padmanabhanagar ticket to former legislator M Srinivas, who they claimed was 'a BJP agent'. They demanded that the ticket be given to B Gurappa Naidu. They also threatened to quit the party if Srinivas was given the ticket.

Similarly, supporters of former minister B Shivaram staged a protest against Hassan District In-charge Minister A Manju, demanding a ticket for Shivaram to contest from Belur segment.

Earlier, a section of Congress workers had threatened to rebel if Nallurhalli Nagesh was not given the ticket for the Mahadevapura constituency. The party has shortlisted A C Srinivasa as a probable candidate.

New Delhi, Jan 26: On the occasion of the 71st Republic Day, Karnataka state's tableau depicted the philosophy of Basaveshwara and the concept of Anubhava Mantapa (Centre for Experience), which was the socio-religious centre that existed in the present-day Basava Kalyana of Bidar district in Karnataka.

It is regarded as the first religious parliament in the history of mankind.

This 12th-century centre has a special significance in the history of humanity, as it represents composite culture, philosophy, spirituality, equality among other universal human values.

These values were propagated by the saint and social reformer- Basaveshwara and other sharanas- followers of Basava philosophy of the socio-religious movement.

It is significant that representatives of Anubhava Mantapa were nominated based on their spiritual attainment, regardless of caste, class and sect they belonged and thus discarded the differentiation of human beings as higher or lower, on the basis of birth, occupation and gender.

The front part of the tableau has the replica of Basaveshwara preaching his most cherished value - "Work is Worship".

For Republic Day Parade 2020, a total of 56 tableaux proposals (32 from states/UTs and 24 from Ministries/Departments) were received. Out of these, 22 were shortlisted for participation in the Republic Day Parade 2020.

Lucknow, Apr 13: Muslims in Uttar Pradesh are now worried that the intense communal profiling of the Corona patients by the official agencies could lead to lynching incidents once the lockdown is lifted.

Muslim scholar and former SP spokesman, Abdul Hafiz Gandhi, on Monday said, "The manner in which the government agencies are identifying persons belonging to Tablighi Jamaat in the list of Covid-19 patients is now translating into intense communal profiling which has been prohibited by the World Health Organization and the central government. A very small percentage of Muslims subscribe to the Tablighi Jamaat ideology but the impression going around is that the Muslim community, in general, is spreading coronavirus."

He said that there was a strong possibility of Muslims, in general, being attacked after the lockdown is lifted.

"This is exactly what happened on the cow slaughter issue. Even a small rumour led to people being lynched by mobs across the country. Corona is a pandemic and should be treated like one. We should fight against the virus together instead of creating a communal divide. Every day, the government spokesman lays down the number of Corona positive cases and then goes on to say how many of them are from Tablighi Jamaat," he explained.

Amir Haider, a social activist and also a veteran Congress leader, echoed similar sentiments when he said, "We strongly condemn the Tablighi Jamaat for ignoring the protocols and holding the congregation but why is the state government repeatedly harping on the religious angle. Shia and Sunni clerics are repeatedly asking the people to adhere to government guidelines and follow safety protocols.

He said that efforts to create a communal divide on the corona issue could have dangerous ramification after the lockdown is lifted."

A retired IAS officer, who did not wish to be named, said, that people have already started objecting to taking home deliveries from Muslim employees.

"My neighbours refused to take delivery of groceries from a Muslim boy. This is just the beginning of the narrative that is being drilled into the minds. We must check this before it explodes into something very dangerous," he said.
