NRI businessman trapped in debt returns from UAE after 15 yrs as Yusuffali pays Dh 400,000

Kasaragod, Oct 19: An NRI businessman, trapped in 28 legal cases in United Arab Emirates, coupled with several health issues, has finally returned to India after 15 years, thanks to financial and legal support by Indian businessman Yusuffali MA, chairman of Lulu Group.

Moosakutty Puzhakkara, a native of Pattambi, Kerala, had a travel ban which confined him and his family to a dingy one-room home in Ras Al Kahimah for more than a decade with almost 50 per cent paralysis.

Moosakutty was an office boy in Abu Dhabi who managed to save up enough money to launch a business, but the past decade had been tragic for him.

He incurred a Dh1.5 million debt; was jailed from 2012 to 2015; had not seen home for 15 years, and the right side of his body is paralysed. 

After month-long legal proceedings and interaction with all relevant government stakeholders, including His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, Yusuffali was able to finalise an early settlement of his debts and legal issues.

As per the court ruling, Yusuffali paid Dh400,000 as final settlement and facilitated the travel back home of Moosakutty and his wife on Friday.

"I was moved by Moosakutty's miserable health and living condition. The challenge was to get settlements in more than 28 court cases as soon as possible. All other relevant authorities helped speed up proceedings which resulted in the lifting of the travel ban and the return of Moosakutty to his home and family in India. I sincerely wish and pray that Moosakutty recovers fast and has a happy and prosperous life ahead with family and loved ones," said Yusuffali.

Bengaluru,  Aug 4: Karnataka has seen a substantial increase in COVID-19 recovery rate, which was 5.67 per cent in the last week, state Medical Education Minister Dr. K Sudhakar said.

"Every day there is an increase in recovery rate which is higher by 9.17 per cent in Bengaluru city. The overall recovery rate of the state by Sunday evening was 42.81 per cent and it is 35.14 per cent in Bengaluru," the Minister wrote in a tweet.

Minister Sudhakar also directed officials to resolve the issue raised by a woman who had written to him about her struggle to take possession of the body of her father in St. Johns hospital, Madivala.

The hospital she claimed was charging money to hand over the body.

"It is inhuman on part of the hospital to refuse handover of the body. I came to know about this incident in the media and responded immediately to help out the woman," Dr. Sudhakar wrote in his tweet.

Karnataka has so far reported 74,598 active COVID-19 cases, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Mangaluru, Mar 24: Seven people were arrested on Tuesday for violating prohibitory orders imposed under Section 144 of CrPC in Mangaluru during the lockdown in Karnataka, Commissioner of Police PS Harsha said.
Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday had announced a complete lockdown in the state till April 1.
"In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the entire state will be locked down from 12 am of March 23 to April 1. People are requested to strictly follow it to contain the coronavirus spread," he said.
Earlier, the state government had ordered the suspending of all public and private transport services.
According to the data compiled by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of the infection-related death toll in the country rose to nine on Tuesday, while the total number of active cases reached 482.

Kasaragod, June 2: As Kerala commenced fresh academic year with online classes from Monday, a ninth-standard student at Malappuram district in North Kerala ended life allegedly owing to lack of online study facilities like television connection and a smartphone at her house.

Devika, daughter of Balakrishnan, hailing from a Dalit community at Valancherry, about 25 kilometres from Malappuram town, ended her life.

Balakrishnan told the media that he could not recharge the television connection owing to financial crunches. He was working as a daily wage worker and owing to COVID-19 and lockdown, he was not having much work these days. 

The family also did not have a smartphone or computer. The family members alleged that Devika was quite upset as she could not attend the virtual class that began on Monday. She was a student of a nearby government school.

Local police said that Devika, who was the eldest among four children of Balakrishnan, was suspected to have self-immolated using kerosene at a premise close to her house on Monday evening. The cause and provocations were still being probed only. No suicide notes were recovered yet.
