NRI gets 10 years jail in Saudi for abusive tweets against the Prophet

Kasaragod, Jan 29: A non-resident Indian hailing from Kerala has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for a series of abusive tweets against Prophet Mohammed.

The convict is Vishnu Dev son of Radhakrishnan Nair. Though initially he was sentenced to 5 years of jail term recently the quantum of punishment was increased.

According to a letter received by the family of Vishnu from the Consular, Passport and Visa Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, he was arrested for “cybercrime pertaining to blasphemy and spreading messages against the Kingdom through social media.”

He was arrested on June 7, 2018. On September 13, he was given a five-year jail term and a penalty of 1.5 lakh Saudi Riyal. His sentence was increased to 10 years on January 24,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Nair, who resides in Alappuzha, said that he had sought the help of several politicians to get his son released from jail, but to no avail.

Vishnu was working as an engineer at Nasser S Al-Hajri Corporation, a subsidiary of Saudi Aramco, before his arrest.

You might be follower of enemies of islam in India, but you cannot do it in Saudi Arabia or Gulf countries. You mihgt have been brainwashed in india but anti national and anti muslim political parties, who are trying to make use of you to spread hate among different communities for their political benefit. At last you will be the one to suffer. No political for whom you are working will not come to support you and they will say you are not related to their party and there is no connection between you and the party. dont get fooled by these hate political parties. I am sorry for the fate of this unfortunate person and hope he will be freed at the earliest possible. This is good lesson for all hate mongers in Saudi Arabia. Dont bring your dirty politics to saudi arab ia. People from all religion are living peacefully here. They eat together and live together as one family.

Karnataka govt hikes salaries of NHM doctors to Rs 45,000

Bengaluru, Jul 21: The salaries of doctors under the National Health Mission (NHM) has been hiked to Rs 45,000 in Karnataka, according to Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar.

Addressing the media on Monday, Dr Sudhakar said that the state government will bear the cost of the hike in salaries of the doctors and added that ASHA workers too will get a hike in their pay soon.

Regarding the COVID-19 management in the state, he further said that testing will be increased in the containment zones.

During a meeting chaired by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, the Education Minister said that it had been decided that booth level committees will conduct door to door survey for early detection of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), and vulnerable persons.

He also implored private hospitals to admit and treat COVID-19 patients and asked them to not be hesitant in admitting pregnant women.

Karnataka on Monday reported 3,648 COVID-19 cases taking the tally to 67,420, informed the state health department.

According to a bulletin issued by the department, the state recorded 72 more deaths due to COVID-19 with the toll at 1,403 while six patients who tested positive for the infection have died due to non-COVID causes, as of Monday. There are 42,216 active cases in the state.

Muslim, Dalit leaders stage hunger strike against CAA, NRC in Hubballi

Hubballi, Jan 15: Leaders of the Muslim community, Dalit organisations, Congress Party, and others are staging a hunger strike at Dr B R Ambedkar Circle in Hubballi, opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, they demanded the withdrawal of the CAA and not to implement NRC.

"India is witnessing such a dictatorship for the first time. The BJP government is trying to divide people into the lines of religion, through CAA and NRC. This move is a threat for peace and harmony in the country," said AICC member Shakir Sanadi, who led the protest.

Sayed Tajuddin Quadri, Moulana Niyaz Alam, Moulana Nayimuddin and others took part in the hunger strike.

Former minister A M Hindasgeri, former MP I G Sanadi, F H Jakkappanavar, Pitambrappa Bilar, and others also extended support to the protest.

Karnataka Yakshagana Academy to credit Rs 2000 to artists bank accounts

Kota, May 9: Karnataka Yakshagana Academy has come to the rescue of artists in distress due to cancellation of all Yakshagana festivals following coronavirus outbreak and clamping of lock-down.

The academy spends lakh of rupees every year from the money sanctioned to it on training new artists, performances and documentation. However, no such activity was undertaken due to COVID-19. Hence, the academy is discussing to transfer a large amount of money to Yakshagana artists as emergency aid, Academy President Prof M A Hegde said here.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, he said that along with this aid the donations by the public and Yakshagana admirers too could be given to the artists.
