Bengaluru, Jan 23: A man claiming to be a doctor working in Venezuela allegedly duped a woman doctor from Bengaluru of Rs. 21.4 lakh in a marriage proposal scam.

The woman, Shreedevi G., 36, in her complaint to the Rajarajeshwarinagar police on Monday said she “met” the accused, who had identified himself as Rakesh Kapoor, on an online matrimony portal in October last year.

He claimed he was an NRI from the U.S. working at one St. Anthony’s hospital in Venezuela on contract. Shreedevi spoke to him frequently online and within weeks, Kapoor proposed that they get married. “He told her he would be visiting India for work in November, and would be in Delhi to purchase medical equipment. He promised to come to Bengaluru to finalise the proposal,” said a police officer.

A few days later, Kapoor allegedly called Shreedevi asking for money. He said he had placed an order for medical equipment worth Rs. 50 lakh with a firm in New Delhi, but the seller needed 10% of the money in advance. He claimed that he was unable to transfer the amount, and asked Shreedevi to help him out. He assured her that he would repay when they would meet in Bengaluru.

As requested, Shreedevi transferred the money to the bank account of the New Delhi firm. Kapoor thanked her for her help, but a week later he called back to say that his November visit had been postponed. He convinced her to transfer some funds to a few bank accounts, claiming that he had made more purchases.

He even got his associates to call her under the guise of employees of firms selling medical equipment.Over time, Shreedevi transferred all her savings to various accounts. Once he learned that she had used up all her savings, Kapoor disconnected his phone. Shreedevi made several attempts to contact him, before realising that she had been duped.

The police have taken up a case of cheating against Kapoor and six others, and efforts are on to track them down.

Bengaluru, Mar 19: Karnataka High Court on Wednesday rejected the plea by Congress leader Digvijay Singh seeking directions to the police to allow him to meet rebel Madhya Pradesh Congress MLAs who are lodged in Bengaluru.

Earlier in the day, Singh said at a press conference, "I have filed a plea in the Karnataka High Court, seeking permission to meet Madhya Pradesh Congress MLAs who are putting up at Bengaluru. I have decided to be on fast and shall take a call on that after the decision of the Supreme Court and the High Court," Singh said at a press conference here earlier.

Singh said, "The BJP is busy in toppling duly-elected governments. We had successfully thwarted their plans to destabilise the MP government but we were let down by Jyotiraditya Scindia who had a very successful career in Congress."

"We never expected that he would ditch us and join hands with the BJP," he added.

The Congress leader also said that the BJP government had become insecure since the Kamal Nath-led government started tightening the laws on mining.

"Chief Minister Kamal Nath drafted a new mining policy for the sand under which the mines were allotted through auction. All this was unpalatable to the BJP and from Day 1 they started offering money to our Congress legislators," he said.

"In BJP, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee's kind of leadership no longer exists. The leadership which controls the BJP now includes people who have joined hands to do all kinds of unscrupulous things which has led to a stage in India where the banks are collapsing, non-performing assets and unemployment are growing," he added.

Earlier today, he was put under preventive arrest after he sat on a dharna near Ramada Hotel here allegedly for not being allowed to meet the 21 rebel Congress MLAs lodged in the hotel.

Bengaluru, Jan 21: Karnataka Chief Minister's political adviser MP Renukacharya has courted controversy yet again with his remarks targeting the Muslim community at a pro-CAA rally in Karnataka on Monday.

Addressing a rally in support of the new citizenship law, the BJP lawmaker accused Muslims of collecting weapons in mosques instead of praying. "There are few traitors who sit in a masjid and write fatwas. They collect weapons inside the mosque instead of praying. Is this why you want a Masjid," Renukacharya said on Monday.

Renukacharya said he won't hesitate to use the money allotted to Muslims for Hindus. "I will resort to such politics in my taluk where the money allotted for Muslims can be used for Hindus. I will put you [Muslims] in your place and show what politics is," said Renukacharya, who is a close aide of CM BS Yediyurappa.

This is not the first time a Karnataka BJP leader has made communal remarks targeting the minority community. Earlier, BJP MLA Somashekar Reddy had made controversial remarks at a pro-citizenship law protest in Ballari when he asked those opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act to think of the "consequences" if the majority community members hit the streets against them.

The MLA had said, "If you do any drama, then if 100 per cent people come, understand what will be your situation. Congress people are lying to you, believing them you are coming on streets. We are 80 per cent, you are 17 per cent, if we react, what will be your situation? Be careful," Reddy had said.

Following outrage, a case was filed against Somashekar Reddy for alleged provocative speech targeting those protesting against the amended citizenship law.
