Olympics 2016: Vijay Goel, Mary Kom launch campaign to wish Indian team

New Delhi, Aug 3: Sports Minister Vijay Goel and five-time world champion MC Mary Kom on Monday wished the Rio Olympics-bound athletes luck and launched a ‘Digital Campaign of Wishes’ for the Indian contingent. In order to promote awareness about the Olympic Games in the country, Goel inaugurated ‘Wall of Wishes’ at India Gate Lawns here at a function which was attended by SAI DG Injeti Srinivas, sports secretary Rajiv Yadav, besides Mary Kom. “We have tried to connect public with Olympics. People who come to India Gate they can write their wishes for the Indian athletes in the wall,” Goel told reporters even as a sizeable crowd watched the unveiling of the ‘Wall of Wishes’.

“We are launching an exhibition at Central Park in Cannaught Place from August 5th to 21st, where matches will be screened 24×7 and people can watch the Games and also take selfies with the cut-outs of the Rio-bound Indian athletes. We have also launched a campaign in twitter. You can wish and support the Rio-bound athletes by changing your profile picture on twitter. You have to tweet #KheloIndia to @indiasports to cheer and demonstrate solidarity with the Indian players,” he added.

The Sports Minister said that youngsters can also send their wishes for the Indian Olympians on the Narendra Modi Mobile App (NM APP). London Olympics bronze medallist, Mary Kom said: “My best wishes are always with the Indian contingent. My love and support are always with them and I hope they give their best and win medals. “Representing the country and winning a medal is a different feeling. All the players want to give their best and perform on that and I wish them all the best.”

This initiative comes after the ‘RUN FOR RIO’ event organised by Sports Ministry, which saw around 20,000 school children and youth participate in a 5km run last Sunday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged it off at the National Stadium.

Tokyo, May 9: As the world continues to grapple with coronavirus pandemic, the organisers of Tokyo Game Show have cancelled 2020 showpiece event.

TGS 2020 was slated to be played from September 24 to September 27 at the Makuhari Messe convention center. However, there now talks going on for holding an online event instead.

According to the Verge, this is the first time that TGS has ever been cancelled since it started in 1996.

TGS 2020 gained more attention because of its status as the last major trade show before the launch of the upcoming next-gen consoles, the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not end its partnership with Chinese companies. Vivo, the Chinese smartphone maker, is the main sponsor of the new IPL season as well. Apart from Vivo, PayTM and Dream 11 will also be at the helm of the 13th edition of the IPL. The IPL governing council meeting on Sunday decided to retain the old sponsors.

As soon as the IPL GC announced the decision of retaining the sponsors, a huge number of fans took to Twitter to slam the board for the same. #BoycottIPL started trending as the users urged others to boycott the tournament for the Chinese connection.

Earlier, the demand for exclusion of Chinese companies from the IPL was strong in the wake of the India-China border dispute. But the BCCI cannot abruptly end its collaboration with them. Because of the signed contract itself. And in this age of declining economy, it is difficult to find new sponsors quickly.

The current BCCI contract with Vivo is for five years. Vivo has invested Rs 2,199 crore to become the main sponsor of the IPL. The contract was signed in 2017. However, the BCCI’s move is paving the way for new discussions as calls are mounting across the country to boycott Chinese companies.

The BCCI announced other important decisions besides retaining sponsors. The IPL will be held from September 19 to November 10. The Indian government has given permission to the BCCI to hold the IPL in the UAE. With this, all obstacles in the way of organizing the tournament were removed.

The IPL matches will be played at 7.30 pm Indian time (6 pm UAE time). Most matches are about one match a day. There are a total of ten ‘double headers’ (two matches a day) in the tournament. Franchisees are allowed to appoint as many replacements as they want in the new season in view of the new health situation. At the same time, the maximum number of players a franchise can accommodate is 24. The BCCI is also planning to host a women’s IPL tournament.

Karachi, May 8: A cricket museum based in India has bought a bat auctioned by Pakistan Test captain Azhar Ali to raise funds for the needy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Azhar had put two of his precious belongings -- the bat he used to score 302 runs against the West Indies in a Test in 2016 and the jersey he wore during the 2017 Champions Trophy final win over India -- on an online auction to raise funds for the people affected by the deadly disease.

Both the bat and jersey were signed by members of the Pakistan team.

Azhar announced on social media that he had kept a base price of one million each for the bat and jersey and they had sold for 2.2 million.

He confirmed that Blades of Glory Cricket Museum based in Pune bought the bat by making a winning offer of Rs. 1 million for the bat.

Azhar said that the auction of the shirt also generated a lot of interest and Kash Villani, a Pakistani based in California, came up with the highest bid of Rs. 1.1 million for the shirt before the conclusion of the auction.

Another Pakistani based in New Jersey, Jamal Khan also donated Rs. 100,000 for the cause.

"I put two of my closest belongings on auction with base price of 1 million PKR each to support people suffering due to ongoing crisis. Auction starts now and will close on 11:59 PM 05 May, 2020," Azhar had tweeted.

Ali became the first international player to score a test triple century in Day/Night Test when he scored an unbeaten 302 against the West Indies team in UAE in 2016.

"The shirt is from 2017 Champions Trophy which we won, it has the signature of all the players which were present in the squad," Ali said in a video posted on Twitter.

"Both these things are close to my heart but if it can be used in the difficult times for the benefit of the people I will more than happy."
