Once banned for students, films now part of curriculum: Vijay Kumar Kodialbail

Mangaluru, Sept 6: “When we were going to school and college, we were not allowed to watch films. We would bunk classes and watch films. Now it is the other way round. Institutions have realised the educational value of films,” said noted Tulu playwright and film director Vijay Kumar Kodialbail.

He was speaking at the inauguration of Chrysalis 2018, a two day multi-language film festival organised by the PG department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) of St Aloysius College, Mangaluru here on Wednesday.

Mr Kodialbail added that films are an important medium for the youth to discover themselves and the world. Multiple language films and film festivals provide an excellent platform to discover films depicting various cultures and industries and in this way they could life around.

In his opening remarks, Dr Melwyn Pinto, HOD of JMC elucidated that the film festival theme ‘We are one’ was chosen to emphasise harmony and unity in diversity. Since it was organised on the first death anniversary of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh, a documentary film Namma Gauri was screened during the inauguration.

The students also put up a coordinated dance drama to mark the inaugural programme of the two-day film festival. Actor Arjun Kapikad wished the team success for the film festival hoping that more colleges organise such useful platforms. The Labanese film Caramel drew the maximum crowds on the first day, so much so that it had to be screened multiple times due to popular demand.

The second day -- Sep 6, 2018 -- will feature a panel discussion consisting of national award winning Kannada film director B Suresha and documentary filmmaker Natesh Ullal. Pettai Pili (Tulu), Samskara (Kannada) and Njan Marykutty (Malayalam) are some of the films that will be screened on the second day. Upcoming south Indian actor Siddhi Mahajankatti will be the chief guest for the closing ceremony.

Petrol, diesel prices go up in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Apr 1: The price of petrol and diesel will go up by Rs 1.60 and Rs 1.59 per litre, respectively, from Wednesday. This is in line with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa’s decision to hike the rate of tax on petrol from 32% to 35% and diesel from 21% to 24%.

He had announced this in his March 5 Budget for 2020-21 fiscal. At present, a litre of petrol costs Rs 71.97 and diesel Rs 64.41 in Bengaluru.

The government decided to roll out the hike from Tuesday midnight going into Wednesday, April 1, after briefly considering a postponement in view of the COVID-19 crisis.

Finance Secretary (Budget & Resources) Ekroop Caur confirmed to DH that the hike will be rolled out.

The 3% hike on fuel tax was a key resource mobilisation measure that Yediyurappa announced in his Budget. The hike is expected to fetch the government Rs 1,500 crore.

Yediyurappa had also announced a 6% additional excise duty on Indian Made Liquor (IML), which could help the government mop up Rs 1,200 crore. However, the sale of liquor has been prohibited during the lockdown period. Plus, hiking fuel prices during the lockdown will not hit citizens very hard.

Man arrested under Wildlife Protection Act for biting snake to death in Karnataka

Kolar, May 7: A 38-year-old man has been arrested for biting a snake and peeling off its skin at Mustur village in Kolar district of Karnataka.

Mulbagal range forest officer KN Ravikeerthi said forest officials nabbed Kumar, a construction worker, at Mustur on Wednesday and booked him under the Wildlife Protection Act. He was under the influence of alcohol.

Ravikeerthi said Kumar's offence is non-bailable and attracts a jail term of up to three years. The remains of the snake were collected and sent to a lab to ascertain its species. Forest officials said the snake Kumar bit was not a viper as was reported earlier but a rat snake.

On Tuesday, Kumar was riding back home after buying liquor when the snake ca me under his bike's wheels. He tossed the injured snake around his neck, bit it and peeled off its skin. Kumar said the snake had troubled him in the past.

Karavali Utsava in Mangaluru from Jan 10 to 19

Mangaluru, Jan 8: Dakshina Kannada District In-Charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, on Wednesday announced that the District Administration will organise the Karavali Utsava from January 10-19 at Karavali Utsava Maidaan here in the city.

The minister was addressing a press conference on Wednesday morning at the Deputy Commissioner’s office. He informed that a rally will march from Nehru Maidaan to Karavali Utsava Maidaan on January 10 to officially mark the inauguration of the utsava.
The rally will be flagged off by Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary.

Beach Utsava and Kite Festival will be organised at the Panambur beach on January 17, 18 and 19 as a part of Karavali Utsava.
