Only 10 registered as NRIs voter in Karnataka; other NRIs in general category

Udupi, Nov 12: Only 10 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from Karnataka have registered themselves as 'overseas electors' for the May 12 assembly polls.

NRIs whose names don't figure in the voters' list have to fill Form 6A to register themselves as voters, but not many have come forward despite the Election Commission's efforts to create awareness among NRIs. 

Joint chief electoral officer KN Ramesh confirmed that only 10 NRIs – all hailing from Kundapur in Udupi district and working in Gulf countries filed their details under Form-6A which is meant for NRIs. They have taken special leave to fly down to India and cast their votes.

This does not mean that only 10 NRIs are casting their votes in Karnataka assembly polls. “There are over 14 lakh NRIs residing in various parts of the world, but these 10 have identified themselves as NRIs and enrolled again. Many others may have enrolled themselves as general voters and many may or may not come here to vote. "We can't force the NRIs to register,'' he said.

There is no direct or proxy voting facility for NRIs. Proposal to allow proxy voting or postal ballot system for NRIs is still pending before the Centre. Now NRIs have to come down to vote, he said.

Ramesh said that not many NRIs are aware that they have to enrol themselves in a separate form. The amendment to include NRIs was introduced in 2015-16 and since then it is for the first time a list of ten has been prepared.

Bengaluru, Mar 28: A case has been registered against an Infosys employee in Bengaluru for a shocking social media post urging people to "go out and sneeze" and spread the highly contagious COVID-19 virus that has infected over 800 people across the country and claimed 19 lives.

"Let's join hands, go out and sneeze with open mouth in public. Spread the virus," the man wrote on Facebook.
"A case has been registered against the person. Further investigation on. Looking forward to get adequate support from your end during investigation," Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime, Bengaluru city tweeted by tagging along a tweet by Infosys.
Taking congnisance of the post by its employee, the Infosys said the post was "against the code of conduct and its commitment to responsible social sharing".
"Infosys has completed its investigation on the social media post by one of its employees and we believe that this is not a case of mistaken identity," the company said in a statement on Twitter.
"The social media post by the employee is against Infosys' code of conduct and its commitment to responsible social sharing. Infosys has a zero tolerance policy towards such acts and has accordingly, terminated the services of the employee," the statement added.

Earlier this month, the IT firm had vacated one of its buildings in Bengaluru after an employee was suspected to be infected.

Chikkamagaluru, May 4: KSRTC resumed its service from Chikkamagaluru district headquarters to taluk centres amidst the lockdown to contain COVID-19 on Monday. Chikkamagaluru is in the green zone.

Hundreds of passengers travelled to Sringeri, Mudigere, Koppa and Kadur taluks since morning from the Chikkamagaluru city.

According to KSRTC Divisional Controller, passengers who wish to travel to taluk centres have to register half an hour prior to the journey. 

Sanitisers were placed in the bus stand in Chikkamagaluru to sanitise hands before boarding the buses.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: Karnataka and five other states have their coronavirus antibody test kits stuck in China because of the country's new policy of getting clearance from their government before a company exports its products.

Singapore-based Sensing Self Ltd and China’s Wondfo are the only companies that have cleared Pune's National Institute of Virology (NIV)’s validation for rapid antibody test kit.

Dr CN Manjunath, Director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and nodal officer for COVID-19 lab testing, Karnataka, said, "Inventory is ready in Hong Kong Airport. Karnataka's consignment is stuck with five other states' consignments: Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Meghalaya. On April 1 or 3, China's policy changed saying any exports going out of China has to be certified by the Chinese government."
