Over 1,000 Cong ticket aspirants in 224 seats; Siddu, Param finalizing candidates

Bengaluru, Apr 8: In order to avoid any kind of rebellion by ticket aspirants, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president G Parameshwara are jointly finalizing the list of candidates for May 12 assembly polls. The final list will be soon forwarded to New Delhi just for a formal approval.

According to reports the Congress had asked Siddaramaiah and Parameshwara to finalise tickets for all the seats in consultation with AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka K C Venugopal and screening committee chairman Madhusudhan Mistry.

"The state unit has been told to send one name for each Assembly segment and the high command will approve it," said a leader from the party, adding that "whatever the dispute over the distributions of tickets, it should be solved at the state level itself."

Though more than 1,000 aspirants have applied for tickets in 224 Assembly segments, all the sitting Congress legislators and MLAs who migrated from other parties are likely to get the ticket. For the remaning seats, around 90, Siddaramaiah and Parameshwara will finalise the candidates, including children of some senior party leaders, said the leader.

The screening committee, headed by Mistry, is scheduled to meet in New Delhi on April 9 and 10 and send the list for final approval for the Central Election Committee (CEC) of the party. The CEC is likely to meet on April 11 or 12 to give its final approval. Though April 24 is the last date for filing nominations, most of the tickets will be finalised in second week of April. Candidates for the remaining seats may be announced in third week, he said.

Since the Congress left the seat selection to the state units in Gujarat and Punjab during the Assembly elections there, the party wants to follow the same norm in Karnataka too.

Mangaluru, Jan 31: Mahesh Vikram Hegde, the co-founder of website 'Postcard News', known for spreading fake news on behalf of Sangh Parivar, was taken aback when he was asked to sing 'Vande Mataram' to prove his patriotism by a group of women activists at Mangaluru International Airport.

The video of the incident which occurred on Friday, days after editor-in-chief and co-founder of Republic TV Arnab Goswami was heckled by comedian Kunal Kamra on a flight, went viral on social media within hours.

Hegde was spotted by social activist Kavitha Reddy, and other young orators – Najma Nazeer and Amulya Leona – at the airport where he was waiting to board a plane to Bengaluru.

In a video, the three women are seen coercing Hegde to sing 'Vande Mataram' and prove his patriotism. In another video being circulated, the women are heard telling the journalist that he is getting an opportunity to become a 'hero' from 'zero' if he sings 'Vande Mataram.' However, he refused to open his mouth.

Reddy is seen asking Hegde whether he knew the time when Nathuram Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi.

Hegde was arrested in 2018 for posting a fake news aimed at creating communal conflict.

Bengaluru, Mar 15: The civic body in Bengaluru has said that gathering at marriage functions should not exceed 100 people in order to curb the spread of coronavirus.

A circular issued by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) dated March 15 said, "All marriage functions pre booked in marriage halls, hotels, Party places, etc. prior to the issue of circular dated March 13, shall be allowed to be conducted subject to the condition that the gathering in the function not exceeding 100 persons."

"The above relaxation is an exception in consideration of the difficulties in rescheduling and cancelling the Marriage event immediately," the circular said.

It said, "The Owners/Management of such locations where Marriages are to be solemnized due to pre booking shall maintain high standards of sanitation and hygiene by periodically cleaning by 10 per cent Sodium Hydrochlorite Solution or any other effective disinfectant the surfaces, floors and exposed areas likely to be touched by the attendants."

"Any person attending the function having any such symptoms like Cough, Cold, and Fever etc. shall be requested for immediately leaving the Programmes," it said.

The civic body further said in the circular, "No fresh bookings of any place for Marriage programme are permitted till further orders. Any bookings on future dates by any organizer, event manager, owner of such property or any other person will be at his own risk and action will be taken against the property or any other person for any kind of bookings before an Order allowing such bookings is issued by a Competent Authority."

"The restrictions imposed are in the absolute interest of Public Health for preventing the Community Spread and outbreak of the disease at mass scale. All other restrictions imposed by order dated March 13 shall stand the same," the Circular added.

Bengaluru, Jul 9: The M Chinnaswamy cricket stadium and the Bengaluru Palace in Karnataka will be converted into a COVID-19 care centre, informed the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) on Thursday.

The Bangalore International Exhibition Centre was also recently converted into a COVID-19 care facility by the state government amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

R Ashoka, the state's COVID management in charge said, "People of Bangalore need not panic. All necessary equipment and preparation are being arranged by the state. We have over 600 ambulances ready to take care of COVID patients."

As per the data from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka now has a total of 28,877 COVID-19 cases, including 16,531 active cases and 11,876 recoveries.

470 people have died of the infectious virus in the state so far.
