Mumbai, Nov 28: Leena Yadav on Monday said that there have been instances where people have refused to work with her because she was a woman filmmaker.

The director, who started her career as an editor, recounted an incident where clients not only cast a doubt on her ability but also asked her to prove her proficiency.

"I had lots of people refusing to work with me because I was a woman. I remember one incident where those days we used to work on high band (camera). These clients walked in and I was hired as a freelance editor. They looked at me and said, You are the editor?' I said I am'.

They said, Then you should know everything' and took off all the wires. He said, Then you should also know the wiring of this place'. And I did the wiring and I did know it. Then I said, You know what? I don't want to work with you.' And I walked out," Leena said.

The director was speaking at the in-conversation session Calling The Shots: Women Directors in Indian Cinema', moderated by director Shashank Khaitan at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

Also part of the panel were directors Gauri Shinde and Meghna Gulzar.

Leena said after this incident, she stopped caring about people who practised discrimination as she believes it was their problem, not hers.

She said she has never had any issues with the actors she has worked with since, adding they know that I know their characters better than them.

The director, who has worked with acting greats such as Amitabh Bachchan and Ben Kingsley in Teen Patti, recounted an incident from the sets of the 2010 thriller.

"I remember Ben Kingsley said this, Do you realise she knows the character better than we will ever know even after we finish the film. So I think we should just quietly listen to her'," she recalled.

Leena also shared how she never thought her directorial debut, Shabd in 2005 was a film that was suited for stars. The cast included Aishwarya Rai, Sanjay Dutt and Zayed Khan.

"I didn't think 'Shabd' was a film for stars. It was a very independent kind of film. But my producer Pritish Nandy felt that we should. Then we went to narrate it to the stars and they agreed, which was a shock to me. While making the film, I realised even the actors were not ready for a film like that. My characters were all grey and somewhere they (actors) started getting a bit panicky and started crying in the film to get sympathy," she said.

She got an instant PhD into film industry politics when the film bombed at the box office, she said.

"I was literally asked to leave town for various reasons. It was heart-breaking and I had never experienced anything like that. Then for six months, I could not function. It was like I was standing naked on the road and everyone was whipping me from all over the place. Then I kind of focused my mind to writing my second film, which I thought nobody would produce. I got to make my next. I realised that's what the journey is.

"I thought making the first film will be the toughest but it gets tougher and tougher. First film is the purest. Even you're not trying to cater or censor, it comes from a place of beautiful innocence that I'm constantly trying to go back to,said the filmmaker, whose next Rajma Chawal is slated to release on Netflix Friday.

Mumbai, Jul 6: Mumbai Police on Monday recorded the statement of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali in connection with actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death.

The director arrived at Bandra Police Station on Monday morning to give his statement.

As per reports, late actor Sushant was approached by Bhansali for his 2013 film "Goliyon Ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela". However, Sushant could not take up the offer reportedly due to his contract with a production house. Later Ranveer Singh was signed for the role. The female lead was played by Deepika Padukone and the film turned out to be a commercial success.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Police has, over the past weeks, recorded statements of Sushant's family, staff, a few of his friends, and Rhea Chakraborty, besides filmmaker Mukesh Chhabra and actress Sanjana Sanghi who worked with the late actor in his upcoming last film "Dil Bechara".

Sushant Singh Rajput was found hanging in his Mumbai residence on June 14. The actor's postmortem report stated his death was a suicide.

Within a few days of the actor's death, a complaint was filed by advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Bihar's Muzaffarpur. The case filed regarding the actor's death was against eight Bollywood personalities including Bhansali, Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra and Ekta Kapoor.

Mumbai Police is investigating the death of the actor, though many fans on social media have been demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case.

Mumbai,  Aug 7: Unless Maharashtra Government consents to CBI investigation in the Sushant Singh Rajput's death case, it would be illegal, affecting the federal structure of the country, said actor Rhea Chakraborty's lawyer.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered and continued the illegality which was perpetrated at the hands of Bihar Police in connection with the case, he added.

"The Bihar Government transferred a case with which it had no jurisdiction to investigate, to CBI instead of the Mumbai Police which is the legal position. The Supreme Court is seized of the issue pursuant to the transfer petition filed by Rhea Chakraborty," said Satish Maneshinde Chakraborty's lawyer.

The Supreme Court has directed all parties to file their replies and Mumbai Police is directed to place the report of investigations, he added.

"Pending the said proceedings the CBI has registered and continued the illegality which was perpetrated at the hands of Bihar Police.

CBI being a premier investigative agency in the country should desist from taking any further steps pending the SC proceedings. Apart from the same unless the Maharashtra Government consents to CBI investigating the case ... it would be totally illegal and beyond any known legal principles, affecting the Federal Structure of the Nation," said Maneshinde.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CBI that is probing high profile cases of Vijay Mallya and AgustaWestland cases will now investigate the Sushant Singh Rajput's death case.

The investigating agency has registered a case against six accused including Bollywood actor Rhea Chakraborty and others in connection with the Rajput's death.

The sources in CBI said that six accused in the case will be summoned soon for questioning and other persons will also be called for examining which was earlier examined by Mumbai police.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had earlier sent a recommendation to the Central Government for CBI investigation in the case filed in Patna based on the complaint of Sushant's father KK Singh against Rhea Chakraborty under sections including abetment of suicide on July 25.

Sushant was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14.

Days after Rajput's death, Rhea Chakraborty said she was the "girlfriend" of the 'Dil Bechara' actor while requesting a CBI inquiry in the case.

Chakraborty has also approached the Supreme Court for transfer of investigation to Mumbai in the FIR registered against her in Patna.
