People’s money kept in bank or with them not safe; they lost faith in BJP: Mamata

New Delhi, Dec 11: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday attributed demonetisation and 'collapse of banking system' as two principal reasons for the defeat of BJP in crucial Hindi heartland states. 

"When the money kept in the bank or with them were not safe, people almost lost faith in the system. It was like direct assault on their life itself", Ms Banerjee told reporters in Kolkata as election results showed BJP was heading for defeat in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and facing stiff challenge from Congress in Madhya Pradesh.

"They (BJP government) are silencing the voice of the media and all democratic institutions. There have been occasions when journalists lost their jobs," she said.

"The Chhattisgarh rout is a big defeat, I feel," said Ms Banerjee, whose party is in direct confrontation with the BJP in West Bengal especially after the Panchayat elections in April-May this year. 

Trying to drive home the point that the BJP is a weak contender in the southern states, she said therefore the BJP's defeat in Rajasthan is also politically significant. 

"Where do they exist really", she said mocking at the saffron party adding "Na acchey Bengal-e na acchey Odisha-tey (They do not exists either in West Bengal or in Odisha as well)".

New Delhi, Feb 5: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday expressed his suspicion over the government using force to clear the Shaheen Bagh stretch where an agitation has been ongoing for over 50 days against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

While speaking to ANI over the phone, Owaisi was asked that there are indications from the government that after February 8, Shaheen Bagh will be cleared.

In reply, he said, "Might be they will shoot them, they might turn Shaheen Bagh into Jallianwala Bagh. This might happen. BJP minister gave a statement to 'shoot a bullet'. The government must give an answer as (to) who is radicalising."

Further speaking about NPR and NRC, Owaisi said, "Government must give a clear cut answer that till 2024 NRC will not be implemented. Why are they spending Rs 3900 crore for NPR? I feel this way because I was a History student. Hitler during his reign conducted census twice and after that, he pushed the jews in a gas chamber. I don't want our country (to) go in that way."

Mumbai, Jul 1: Mumbai police on Wednesday imposed section 144 of CrPC prohibiting the movement of people in public places and gatherings, to prevent the spread of Covid-19, an official said.

The prohibitory order, issued by a senior police official, says restrictions on the movement of residents for non- essential work will remain in force till July 15.

The order prohibits "presence or movement of one or more persons in public places or gathering of any sort", the official said.

New Delhi, Jun 17: With an increase of 10,974 new cases and 2,003 deaths in the last 24 hours, India's COVID-19 count reached 3,54,065 on Wednesday while the toll due to the virus stands at 11,903.

This includes 1,55,227 active cases and 1,86,935 cured, discharged and migrated patients, according to the Union Health Ministry.

While the spike in the number of cases has stayed below the 11-thousand mark, the death toll has increased manifold today as compared to the 380 death reported on Tuesday.

Maharashtra with 1,13,445 cases continues to be the worst-affected state in the country with 50,057 active cases while 57,851 patients have been cured and discharged in the state so far. The toll due to COVID-19 has crossed the five thousand mark and reached 5,537 in the state.

It is followed by Tamil Nadu with 48,019 and the national capital with 44,688 confirmed cases.
