'PK' set for mega earnings as opening days brush the Rs 100 crore mark

December 23, 2014

Aamir KhanMumbai, Dec 23: Aamir Khan and Anushka Sharma’s latest movie PK, which released on Friday, is set to make big numbers at the box office as the first three days’ collections are already a little over Rs 92 crore.

Despite uproar by some Hindutva organisations demanding a ban on the film for allegedly being anti-Hindu, the box office collection for the film witnessed a steady hike during the weekend.

Released in as many as 5,000 screens in the domestic market and around 600 screens in the international market, the film earned Rs 37 crore on Sunday, while the collections on Friday and Saturday amounted to Rs 26 and Rs 29.50 crore, respectively.

The film has been doing major business in multiplexes across the nation, where it dominated multiple screens.

Single-screen theatres in Mumbai, however, have reportedly decided to discard the screening of PK for the coming two weeks, to protest against premium ticket rates for the multi-starrer Christmas bonanza.

PK is the second joint offering by film-maker Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir, who previously collaborated in 2010’s multiple record-breaking film 3 Idiots.

PK, a satirical film which takes pot-shots at godmen and people’s blind faith on religion, has been facing the ire of several religious organisations.

A love track between an ‘Indian girl’ (Anushka Sharma) and a ‘Pakistani boy’ (Sushant Singh Rajput) has also been looked down upon, by the protesting groups, as an endorsement of love jihad.

And thus, Twitter has been abuzz with posts by a few staunch Hindu groups who have come out to protest against PK, and have been posting derogatory messages against Aamir and Hirani, using now-trending hashtags BoycottPK and GodSavePK.

A few tweets also protested against the hike in PK’s tickets.

Meanwhile, Aamir’s loyal fans have come out in full force to support the actor on Twitter by plugging the film with #WeSupportPK and #PKWinning-Hearts.

"Tu bhul gaya woh time jab tu mere ghar pe aake… ‘bhai bhai meri album kar do. Bhai 'Deewana' kar do. Bhai, Smita Thackeray se milwa do, Bal Thackeray se milwa do. Abu Salem se bacha lo. Abu Salem galiyaan de raha hai'... yaad hai na? Yaad hai ki nahi yeh sab cheezein? Main tujhe keh raha hoon mere muh mat lagna ab tu bas. (Do you remember the time when you used to come to my home requesting me… ‘brother record an album for me. Brother, record Deewana for me. Brother, introduce me to Smita Thackeray and Bal Thackeray. Save me from Abu Salem. Abu Salem is abusing me'… do you remember? Don't mess with me, I am warning you)."

"Marina Cover yaad hai na? Woh kyon boli, woh kyon back out kiya yeh mujhe nahi pata. Media ko pata hai mafia kis tarah function karta hai. Uska video mere paas padha hai. Ab agar tune mere se panga liya, toh woh video main apni YouTube channel mein dal dunga. Samjha? Mere mooh mat lagna (Do you remember Marina Cover? I don't know no why they spoke and why they backed out, but media knows how the mafia functions. I still have that video with me. Now if you mess with me, I will upload that video on my YouTube channel. So don't mess with me)."

In a recent video posted on Instagram, Sonu Nigam had appealed to music companies (without taking names) to be a little kind towards newcomer artistes, saying otherwise more people will commit suicide. He had mentioned in his previous video that currently two companies rule the music industry. He had also claimed falling prey to power play by a Bollywood actor.

Los Angeles, Jun 26: Warner Bros has moved its Christopher Nolan-directed espionage thriller Tenet from July 31 to August 12.

It's the second delay for the highly-anticipated movie, which was originally scheduled to release on July 17 but was postponed to July 31 due to coronavirus pandemic.

Warner Bros. is committed to bringing Tenet' to audiences in theaters, on the big screen, when exhibitors are ready and public health officials say it's time. In this moment what we need to be is flexible, and we are not treating this as a traditional movie release.

We are choosing to open the movie mid-week to allow audiences to discover the film in their own time, and we plan to play longer, over an extended play period far beyond the norm, to develop a very different yet successful release strategy, a Warner Bros spokesperson said in a statement to Deadline.

The studio has also delayed the US re-release of Nolan's sci-fi blockbuster Inception, in honour of the film's 10th anniversary, to July 31.

Tenet features John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Kenneth Branagh, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Caine, Clemence Poesy, Dimple Kapadia and Himesh Patel.
