Poll results show yearning for 'BJP-mukt' regime: Shiv Sena

Mumbai, Dec 12: A day after the BJP received a poll drubbing in three Hindi heartland states, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday said the election results indicate people's desire to have a "BJP-free" establishment.

The Sena, an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Maharashtra, said people have brought "those flying in the air back to the ground".

Referring to the resignation of RBI Governor Urjit Patel, the Sena, in an editorial in the party mouthpiece 'Saamana', alleged that the country was being run according to the "whims" of four-five businessmen, and this was "breaking" important institutions like the Reserve Bank of India.

The Congress Tuesday dealt a body blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan and emerged as the single largest party in Madhya Pradesh.

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) recorded a landslide win for a second consecutive term in Telangana while the Mizo National Front (MNF) scripted a spectacular victory in the northeastern state of Mizoram by dislodging the Congress in its last bastion in the Northeast to return to power after 10 years.

The Sena said these results have busted the myth that no party except the BJP can hold ground and people have to depend on it for existence.

The BJP first "drove away" allies and later lost important states, it said, adding that elections cannot be won merely on the back of big talks.

"The results clearly show that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and (BJP president) Amit Shah's dream of making the country Congress-mukt has gone to the dust in BJP's own regime. People of these states have indicated at a 'BJP-mukt' regime," the Marathi publication said.

Farmers in Rajasthan were facing difficulties and when cultivators in Madhya Pradesh hit the streets demanding justice, bullets were fired at them, it said referring to the Mandsaur incident, and claimed tillers exact"revenge" in the recent elections.

In June 2017, during a protest in Madhya Pradesh's Mandsaur district by farmers demanding loan waiver, five cultivators were killed in police firing.

The Sena again hit out at the government's decision of demonetisation, dubbing it as a "farce" which "ruined the country's economy".

"People lost their jobs, inflation increased. At that time, our prime minister was playing world politics and kept on flying. He directly landed for campaigning in four states. His childish talks were filled with issues of faith. This turned against him," the publication said.

It said Urjit Patel, who had initially supported demonetisation, finally resigned from the RBI governor's post "tired of the government's functioning".

Patel, who had a run-in with the government over several key issues including the central bank's autonomy, resigned from his job on Monday, citing personal reasons. He had more than eight months left in his three-year tenure.

New Delhi, May 10: The Delhi government has asked district magistrates to release 2,446 Tablighi Jamaat members from quarantine centres and ensure that they do not stay in any other place except their homes.

The district magistrates will explore the possibility of sending those Tablighi members, who belong to other states, in buses to their designated places in accordance with social distancing norms and other protocols, DDMA Special CEO K S Meena said in a letter to deputy commissioners (administration).

As man as 567 foreign attendees of the congregation held in Delhi's Nizamuddin area in March, will be handed over to the police, Meena said.

"They (foreign Jamaat attendees) will be handed over to police in connection with several violations like visa violation," a government official said on Saturday.

Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain had recently ordered the release of Tablighi members who have completed their required quarantine period in centres and tested negative for COVID-19.

"Out of such people belonging to Delhi, who could be released as per prescribed guidelines should be issued passes to travel from the quarantine centres.

"Under no circumstances, the aforesaid persons should be allowed to stay in any other places including mosques," Meena said in the letter.

In respect of those Tablighi members belonging to other states, it should be ensured by the nodal officer and the area ACP that such people reach their place of residence, he also said.

"The DC should also inform the respective resident commissioner of their states in respect of each and every movement of such persons from Delhi," the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Special CEO said.

Thousands of Tablighi Jamaat members had been taken out of its Markaz (centre) in Nizamuddin, where they had gathered for a religious congregation, and quarantined as the area became a major hotspot after a number of members tested positive for coronavirus.

On March 31, the Delhi Police's Crime Branch had lodged an FIR against seven people, including Maulana Saad Kandhalvi, on a complaint by Station House Officer, Nizamuddin, for holding the congregation.

Islamabad, Jun 24: A plane crash which killed 97 people in Pakistan last month was because of human error by the pilot and air traffic control, according to an initial report into the disaster released Wednesday.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane came down among houses on May 22 after both engines failed as it approached Karachi airport, killing all but two people on board.

"The pilot as well as the controller didn't follow the standard rules," the country's aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan said, announcing the findings in parliament.

He said the pilots had been discussing the coronavirus pandemic as they attempted to land the Airbus A320.

"The pilot and co-pilot were not focused and throughout the conversation was about coronavirus," Khan said.

The Pakistani investigation team, which included officials from the French government and the aviation industry, analysed data and voice recorders.

The minister said the plane was "100 percent fit for flying, there was no technical fault".

The county's deadliest aviation accident in eight years came days after domestic commercial flights resumed following a two-month coronavirus lockdown.

Many passengers were on their way to spend the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr with loved ones.
