Possibility of alliance with Cong in UP almost over: SP leader

Lucknow, Jan 21: Senior SP leader Naresh Agarwal today said the possibility of an alliance between the Samajwadi Party and Congress for the upcoming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh was "almost over". "The (possibility of an) alliance between the SP and Congress is now almost over. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav had offered 100 seats to the Congress, but they were insisting on 120 seats and were not ready to accept anything less than that.akhilesh

"They were told that we already have 234 sitting MLAs and some others will also contest and that we cannot contest from anything less than 300 seats. But, the Congress appeared to be adamant. It seemed that they have a great influence in the state," the SP MP said. "The chief minister said we cannot give more than 100 seats and the Congress leaders said they cannot go ahead with the alliance under these conditions...the alliance is almost over," Agarwal added.

Congress sources here said that sensing the SP leadership's "inflexibility" after they announced their candidates without waiting for a decision on the alliance, the party had started working on its own list of candidates. They added that the party has finalised the candidates for the first two phases of polling in Uttar Pradesh in case the alliance does not come through.

New Delhi, Jul 31: With the highest single-day spike of 55,079 COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, India's coronavirus tally breached the 16 lakh mark on Friday, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

With this latest spike, the total cases in the country stand at 16,38,871. Among these cases 5,45,318 are active. A total of 10,57,806 patients have been cured/discharged/migrated.

779 deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported in the country in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 35,747.

As per the Union Health Ministry, Maharashtra has a total of 1,48,454 active cases and recorded 14,729 deaths due to COVID-19.
Tamil Nadu has a total of 57,962 active cases and 3,838 deaths in the state.

Delhi has a total of 10,743 active cases and 3,936 deaths.

The Indian Council of Medical Research on Friday informed that a total number of COVID-19 samples tested up to 30th July is 1,88,32,970 including 6,42,588 samples tested yesterday.

New Delhi, April 6: India recorded the highest number of 704 positive cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.

With these new cases, the total number of COVID-19 positive cases in India have now climbed to 4,281.

Total deaths stand at 111 including 28 new deaths. So far, 318 COVID-19 patients have been cured across the country.

New Delhi, Jul 7: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued revised guidelines regarding the conduct of terminal semesters and final year exams by Universities and educational institutions. It has been suggested that exams may be completed by September in online or offline modes.

Releasing a statement, the UGC said it accepted the recommendations suggested by the expert committee. "In continuation to earlier Guidelines issued on 29.04.2020 and based on the Report of the Expert Committee, the UGC Revised Guidelines on Examination and Academic Calendar for the Universities in view of COVID-19 Pandemic were also approved by the Commission in its emergent meeting held on 6th July 2020," the statement read.

The Commission further said that while it was important to safeguard principles of health, safety and equal opportunities, it was also very important to ensure academic credibility, career opportunities and future progress of students.

"The Commission approved the recommendations of the Expert Committee regarding the conduct of terminal semester(s)/ final year(s) examinations by the universities/ institutions to be completed by the end of September 2020 in offline (pen & paper online/ blended (online + offline) mode," it added.

The UGC also said that if required it would also issue relevant details related to admissions and academic calendar in the universities and colleges. It asked the students to adopt the latest guidelines and complete the terminal semester or final year exams accordingly.
