Priyanka Chopra was sceptical to sign 'Quantico'

Mumbai, Sep 28: American TV series “Quantico” is a big break for Priyanka Chopra in an international scene but the actress had second thoughts about signing the show as she felt it would require a long commitment.

QuanticoThe 33-year-old actress, who bagged the show during the shooting of “Gunday”, had her kitty full with back-to-back releases like “Mary Kom”, “Dil Dhadakne Do” and two upcoming projects “Bajirao Mastani” and “Jai Gangaajal”.

“I was a little sceptical initially because it’s a long commitment. I had to balance television and Hindi films. The script was incredible and I just couldn’t say no to it,” Priyanka told PTI in an exclusive interview over phone.

“I was shooting ‘Gunday’ when Kelly Lee, who is into casting, came to meet me. Then I had to go to LA and read the 25 pilots that they had picked for me and tell them the ones I liked. I am happy that I got my first pick, which was ‘Quantico’,” the actress said.

The show revolves around a group of young Federal Bureau of Investigation recruits, who are training at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.

Priyanka plays the lead character of Alex Parrish, who becomes the FBI’s prime suspect.

The former Miss World feels the viewers will like the mystery aspect of the series. “The audience would discover with me the various twists and turns,” she said.

Priyanka said her team and the people in the US have been warm to her.

“They are all amazing people. I am having a great time shooting for the show. They are treating me well,” she said.

The “Fashion” star cannot wait the audience to watch “Quantico”, which goes on air today in the US.

It will premiere in India on October 3 on Star World and Star World Premiere HD.

“I am excited as well as nervous. I am waiting to see the reaction of people. I am hoping people will like it. I have worked hard for this show. I just hope the audience loves it as much as I do,” Priyanka said.

The actress credits Bollywood stars like Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan for paving way for other Indian actors to get work in Hollywood.

“It is a great shift for Indian actors today. Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan have paved the way for us to be there by doing amazing work. I am happy we are getting the opportunity to show our talent to the world,” she said.

The National award-winning actress feels happy to have come a long way in her career.

“The world has become this big global family… The horizons are expanding. For me, a girl, who comes from (a small town like) Bareli, I see it as an incredible time for me after reaching here. I feel if I can do it, why can’t others,” Priyanka said.

Often Indian actors are not recognised for the cameos they do in Hollywood films or international TV shows but the actress is not bothered about this and prefers quality over quantity.

“I have learnt this from Amitabh Bachchan that the length of the role shouldn’t matter, the quality should. One should impress people with their presence. I feel all kind of work should be respected. I feel fortunate to have got this opportunity,” Priyanka said.

Bihar, Mar 5: A complaint has been filed before a court in Bihar against lyricist Javed Akhtar over his remarks on the FIRs being registered against expelled AAP councillor Tahir Hussain in the wake of Delhi riots.

The complaint was lodged on Wednesday by Amit Kumar, a local advocate, before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Thakur Aman Kumar.

On the basis of a newspaper report, the complainant has alleged that Akhtar's remarks were seditious and promoted religious hatred.

The media report was based on Akhtar's tweet of February 27 that "So many killed, so many injured, so many houses burned, so many shops looted so many people turned destitute but police has sealed only one house and looking for his owner. Incidentally, his name is Tahir. Hats off to the consistency of the Delhi police."

The violence in northeast Delhi claimed at least 42 lives and left over 200 injured. The former Rajya Sabha member was heavily trolled for the tweet.

In a subsequent tweet, Akhtar who asserted that he is a non-believer and a rationalist, had clarified that he was not asking "why Tahir but why ONLY Tahir and not even an FIR against those who have openly threatened violence in the presence of the police".

The matter is likely to come up for hearing on March 25.

Hollywood star Joaquin Phoenix finally ended his dry run at the Oscars as he picked up the best actor trophy for his performance in and as "Joker" at the 92nd Academy Awards.

The 45-year-old actor had earlier bagged a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award for his turn as a failed, unhinged stand-up comedian who descends into chaos.

In a lengthy and rambling speech, Phoenix touched upon racism, climate change and gender inequality. He also remembered his brother River Phoenix, who died of a drug overdose at the age of 23 in 1993.

"When he was 17, my brother wrote this lyric. He said, 'run to the rescue with love and peace will follow'," Phoenix said. At the Academy Awards and the entire Hollywood award season, Phoenix had emerged as an undisputed frontrunner even though he was up against the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio ("Once Upon a Time in Hollywood"), Adam Driver ("Marriage Story"), "Antonio Banderas ("Pain & Glory") and Jonathan Pryce ("The Two Popes").

An Oscar had eluded Phoenix for the most part of his career, despite his successful collaborations with Ridley Scott ("Gladiator"), James Mangold ("Walk The Line") and Paul Thomas Anderson ("The Master"), all of which had earned him nominations.

But as Arthur Fleck aka The Joker, Phoenix finally managed to break that jinx and became the second actor to win an Oscar for playing the DC comic book villain after the posthumous best supporting actor win to Heath Ledger in 2008.

As Joker, Phoenix took a deep dive into character, capturing its essence as well as maniacal spirit in both body and soul.

He lost 52 pounds to get into the physicality of Fleck and turned to a pathological disorder to get his distinct laughter right.

Phillips wrote the part keeping Phoenix in mind though the actor took some convincing to play the role.

Phoenix started the film's festival circuit tour on a positive note at Cannes last year that followed by stops at Venice and Toronto.

The film had also courted controversies, owing to its theme of gun violence in the movie as well as Phoenix's temperamental press tour that saw him walking out of an interview midway.

But critics and the fans loved the actor's riveting turn in the movie and his pointed speeches.

At the Golden Globes, he called out the industry for its insensitivity towards climate change and pulled up his peers for using private jets for travel, while at the SAGs, he joked how he would always lose a role to DiCaprio and asked Christian Bale to deliver a bad performance for once in his career.

In his acceptance speech at the BAFTAs, Phoenix acknowledged the lack of diversity in the nominations, calling himself a part of the problem. Phoenix's career most praised performances include "Signs ", "We Own the Night", "Two Lovers", "The Immigrant", "Her", "You Were Never Really Here" and "Inherent Vice".
