Bengaluru, Aug 14: The meteorological department has sounded a red alert in two coastal and three malnad districts till August 16 as rain returned to the region after a day’s lull.
In its forecast, IMD predicted moderate to heavy rainfall ranging between 100mm and 205mm for the next 48 hours in Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga districts of Malnad, and Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.
Fishermen were asked not to go to sea or rivers for three days. Independence Day will be marked in a simple manner, authorities said.
Five bodies were found in Hassan and Kodagu on Wednesday, taking the toll to 64.
