Udupi, Jul 24: The Pejawar Mutt chief pontiff Vishwesha Teertha Swami, who landed in controversy following the release of an audio tape casting aspersions on his ‘character’, has said that he would quit the Mutt if charges against him are proven.

“I am ready to face any investigation or test. If any aspersion on my character is proved, I will immediately abdicate my position as seer of Pejawar Mutt,” he said in a release. “I have not desired any money from the Shiroor seer nor did I ask it from him,” he added.

The Pejawar seer said that after the death of Shiroor seer, some had questioned as to why he had spoken about the Shiroor seer’s alleged wrongdoings, not returning the presiding deities of Shiroor Mutt and his absence during the performance of last rites of the Shiroor seer. “I had no other alternative but to reply to these issues as the media was after him,” he said.

The Pejawar seer further clarified that he had no role in the abdication (“peetha tyaga”) of Raghuvallabha Tirtha, the former seer of Palimar Mutt, Manojnya Tirtha, the former seer of Shiroor Mutt, or Vidyabhushana, the former seer of Subrahmanya Mutt. On the contrary, he had tried to convince them to continue as heads of their respective mutts.

Meanwhile, the police have intensified their probe into the death of Lakshmivara Tirtha Swami. According to sources, the police collected some items from the Shiroor Mutt. The police are also questioning some persons in this regard, sources said.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Karnataka Forest Minister Anand Singh on Wednesday said that there was no criminal case filed directly against him.

When asked about PIL filed in the Karnataka High Court against him, Singh told media: "Some lawyer has filed a PIL against me in the High Court. I cannot stop anyone from filing the PIL."

"I have given my criminal record. There is no criminal case directly filed against me. My name is there in some cases but in 'others category'. We will see what happens," he said.

When asked about Congress leader Siddaramaiah's comments criticising him for being given the forest portfolio, Singh said: "I cannot comment on what he said against me as he is a former chief minister and very senior leader."

"Also the opposition always tries to make allegations against me. That is why he criticised me," he said.

Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Monday demanded that Forest Minister Anand Singh should either be expelled from the ministry or assigned a different portfolio.

A number of cases are pending against Singh including those registered under the Karnataka Forest Act.

New Delhi, Apr 19: The government on Sunday prohibited the sale of non-essential items through e-commerce platforms during the ongoing lockdown, four days after allowing such companies to sale mobile phones, refrigerators and ready-made garments.

Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla issued an order excluding the non-essential items from sale by the e-commerce companies from the consolidated revised guidelines, which listed the exemption given to the services and people from the purview of the lockdown.

The order said the following clause -- "E-commerce companies. Vehicles used by e-commerce operators will be allowed to ply with necessary permissions" -- is excluded from the guidelines.

The previous order had said such items were allowed for sale through e-commerce platforms from April 20.

However, the reason for reversing the order is not known immediately.

Bengaluru, Feb 18:  A fan of Kannada film star Darshan smashed the face of a police constable with a boulder when the latter asked him to come in the queue to a party to celebrate the star’s birthday.

The incident happened past midnight on February 15 near the residence of the film star where his birthday was being celebrated.

The injured police constable has been identified as Devaraj, attached to the Jnana Bharathi police station.

The film star’s managers had not made arrangements to handle a huge crowd that gathered near his residence and police had a tough time controlling the crowd.

Constable Devaraj was deputed to duty at the party and tried to get the crowd to fall in line.

As the police carried out a mild lathi-charge to control the crowd, a fan of Darshan came up with a boulder in his hand and smashed the face of the constable Devaraj from very close distance. The constable collapsed on the spot and the attacker ran away.

The impact was such that Devaraj’s nose was fractured and he sustained an eye injury. He was admitted to a private hospital and his condition is said to be serious.

The R R Nagar police have registered a case under IPC sections 353 and 352. The cops have launched a hunt for the accused and they are obtaining CCTV footage from the spot.

A complaint is being registered against the organisers of the event and an investigation is on. Several neighbours of Darshan have also complained to the police about the chaos on February 15.
