Religious excursion for vote: 50 women on tour to Dharmasthala sent back home

Chikkamagaluru, May 9: Coastaldigest.com last month had carried a report on political parties wooing voters by arranging them religious excursions ahead of polls. Yesterday officials in Chikkamagaluru district found out such a case and sent the “political pilgrims” back home.

M K Srirangaiah, the Deputy Commissioner of Chikkamagaluru told media persons that a political party had arranged free pilgrimage for woman from Sakharayapattana in private buses to Dharmasthala.

The district authorities had received a complaint that the women were taken to Dharmasthala, to vote for a party. The flying squad rushed to the spot and found that around 50 women were on their way to Dharmasthala in two buses. They were sent home.

Later, the women had been to KSRTC bus stand. The flying squad led by M V Tusharamani rushed to the spot and asked them to return by warning them of filing a case.

“A few had availed individual ticket. However, the ticket for 30 members were booked together,” said the DC.

Srirangaiah said that he has asked the officials to give a report on the incident. Based on the report, action will be taken. It is suspected that these women were lured on the pretext of taking them to Dharmasthala, by a party.

Udupi, May 23: Five more persons tested positive for coronavirus in the coastal district of Udupi today. 

They include three men aged 37, 55, 31 and two women aged 48 and 34. 

Among them four are returnees from Mumbai and one is foreign returnee.

With this the total number of covid-19 cases in the district rose to 55.

New Delhi, Jun 25: The Central government submitted before the Supreme Court on Thursday that the remaining class 10 and 12 CBSE exams, which were earlier rescheduled to be held between July 1 to July 15 in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, have been cancelled.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), informed a three-judge bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar that the remaining class 10 and 12 CBSE exams scheduled to be held in July have been cancelled.

Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu have conveyed their inability to conduct the examinations, Mehta said.

The bench asked whether class 12 students were being given the option to either get marks on the internal assessment basis or appear for an exam later, to which the Mehta responded in the affirmative.

CBSE exams for class 10 students stand cancelled, Mehta said and added that they don't have to give any examinations. Mehta further submitted that as soon as conditions are conducive, CBSE exams for class 12 students, who opt for it, will be conducted.

The apex court was hearing a petition, filed by advocate Rishi Malhotra, seeking directions to cancel the remaining CBSE exams in view of the health risk of coronavirus infection. The apex court was also hearing a similar petition regarding the ICSE exams.

Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), through its counsel Jaideep Gupta, also informed the court that it will also cancel the class 10 and 12 board exams. However, it submitted that it does not agree to give the option to students to give the exam later.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: A 70-year-old woman who tested positive for COVID-19 got discharged from a hospital here on Sunday after she recovered from the novel coronavirus, said Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner, Sindu B Rupesh.

Seven other patients have also recovered and discharged in Dakshina Kannada till date. Total number of active cases in the district has decreased to 5 now.

As many as 232 COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Karnataka till date.

The total number of coronavirus cases in India on Sunday climbed to 8447, including 764 cured and discharged, 1 migrated and 273 deaths, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
