Rowdy sheeter

Bangalore: Aug 20: Venkatesh, a rowdy-sheeter at the Subramanyanagar police station, was fired at and injured in his leg, when he tried to give the police the slip after attacking a constable in the early hours of Tuesday.

An accused in a case of attempt to molestation and kidnap of a woman near Shivananda Circle on August 13, Venkatesh, on noticing the police, tried to speed away on his bike, but lost control and fell.

As the police closed in on him, he brandished a machete and began attacking them. In the scuffle, he stabbed Krishnamurthy, a constable attached to the Ashok Nagar police station, in the back and tried to assail others, too.

Ashok Nagar Police Inspector Rangappa fired a warning shot in the air, counselling him to surrender and drop his weapon. However, Venkatesh continued his assault, following which Rangappa fired at his right leg, injuring him.

Both Venkatesh and constable Krishnamurthy were taken to the Victoria Hospital, the police said.

On receiving information that Venkatesh would be coming to Maurya junction near Ananda Rao Circle to retrieve the car he had abandoned after the incident of August 13 night, the police lay in wait. Then one of them identified Venkatesh near Palace Cross Road at 2.15 am and sought to stop him.

DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil said three teams had been formed to trace Venkatesh.

The police are yet to confirm if he had come to retrieve any possession he had left behind in the car.

The special team was waiting near Palace Cross Road and the car deliberately left at the abandoned spot. As expected, Venkatesh arrived on his bike and assaulted the policemen waiting to nab him, Patil said.

There are around 10 warrants against Venkatesh who was evading arrest changing residences every month to avoid the police. He will be booked under the Goonda Act, Patil added.

The genesis

On August 13 night, Venkatesh, Manjunath and Belli, on reaching Shivananada Circle in their car, zipped past a family trying to cross the road and passed lewd comments at a woman member of the family.

Suresh Gowda, son of Hegganahalli Corporator Govinda Gowda, and his family had been to a restaurant to celebrate their son’s birthday. The trio passed lewd comments at Suresh Gowda’s wife Manasa, enraging Suresh who hurled abuses at them.

The car occupants returned to argue with them.

Venkatesh, after alighting, brandished a knife, following which Gowda’s wife raised an alarm which saw passersby nab Manjunath while the other two fled.

Gowda then lodged a complaint of attempt to molest and kidnap against the trio.

Jun 25: A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide at her house in east Delhi and her family members secretly buried her body, which was later exhumed for post-mortem, police said on Wednesday.

The girl, whose family hails from Jharkhand, allegedly hanged herself in a room in her house on Monday, they said.

No suicide note was recovered from the spot, police said.

Her body was exhumed on Tuesday as per the directions of the Sub Divisional Magistrate of the area. The process was carried out as her family members secretly buried her without informing the police.

The post-mortem will be conducted after Covid-19 tests, police said.

The incident took place on Monday. The reason behind her taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained, they said.

Police said the girl lived with her mother and two siblings. The family hails from Jharkhand and are financially extremely weak. Her father died two years ago, they said.

After the father’s death, the girl's mother along with her siblings took her body to a burial ground and buried her, police said.

The police said the matter came to their notice after a neighbour alerted them about it. Following the information the body was exhumed, they said.

On questioning the girl's mother, she told police that she didn't know that one has to inform police in a suicide case, a senior police officer said.

Inquest proceedings have been initiated, police said.

Tengnoupal, Jan 21: A woman IPS officer has alleged that a rifleman of Assam Rifles physically assaulted and molested her at a check post near Moreh town in Manipur's Tengnoupal district, police said on Tuesday.

Based on a written complaint of the IPS officer, an FIR has been registered against rifleman P K Pandey and a summon has been issued to him to appear before the concerned police station, the police said.

Manipur DGP L M Khaute told reporters on Monday, "We have made contacts with the Assam Rifles authorities. A complaint has been lodged by the officer." In her complaint, the IPS officer said that on reaching Khudengtabi check post on Sunday afternoon one of her escorts, who was not in uniform, told the frisking party of Assam Rifles to register their entry.

Despite showing their identity cards, the rifleman allegedly detained them, she said.

"We offered to search ourselves and the vehicle, but he was not interested", she said.

The rifleman began hitting the official vehicle and "misbehaved, humiliated, harassed and assaulted me and my escort personnel," she alleged.

The IPS officer also alleged that the rifleman molested her and when her escorts tried to intervene, he thrashed them.

She further accused the rifleman of making "sexually coloured" remarks against her, using abusive language and even tried to snatch her phone when she tried to call her senior officers.

The issue was brought under control after the matter was reported to the Brigadier of 26th Assam Rifles and the Major of the D-company of 12th AR, police said.
