Rs 3.25 crore in old notes seized from hotel in Karol Bagh, 5 arrested

New Delhi, Dec 14: In a joint operation conducted by the Income Tax department and the Crime Branch, Rs 3.25 crore in old notes was seized from a hotel in Karol Bagh area in Delhi, news agency ANI reported. The money reportedly belongs to Mumbai-based hawala operators. While five people have been arrested, the Income Tax department is conducting further inquiry.

The seizure follows a string of raids across the country in which alleged unaccounted money has been recovered from various places. The raids are being conducted by the Income Tax department in consonance with the government’s drive to flush out black money in the wake of demonetisation of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes.

Some of the biggest seizures include Rs 13.65 crore (incl Rs 2.60 crore in new Rs 2,000 notes) unearthed from a law firm in Delhi, a haul of Rs 5.7 crore in new notes of Rs 2000 from a JD(S) functionary, Rs 1.33 crore haul in new notes from eight businessmen in three separate raids in Thane and Navi Mumbai and Rs 76 lakh from three men and a woman in a car in Gujarat.

Muzaffarnagar, Jun 11: Three persons have been arrested for allegedly using plastic scrap to make jaggery at Bhokaheri village under Bhopa police station here, as official said on Thursday.

 Police raided a jaggery manufacturing unite (kolhu) and arrested three persons on Wednesday, SHO, Bhopa police station Sanjive Kumar said.

Police have registered a case against five persons including the trio that was arrested while two of them managed to escape, he said, adding that two loaded tractor trollies of plastic scrap have been seized.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jul 22:An accused in a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act jumped into the sea on Wednesday morning when he was taken for evidence collection at Kasaba in Kasargode district, police said.

Accused Mahesh was arrested following a complaint by his neighbour on Tuesday evening.

The police said that they took the accused to the seashore to collect evidence in the case when Mahesh jumped into the sea. Two police officials too jumped in after him to catch hold of him but could not locate Mahesh.

Later, swimmers were deployed to try and locate the missing man.

Thrissur, Jun 11: Volunteers of People for Animal Welfare Services rescued a dog that had its mouth sealed with insulation tape around it for two weeks in Ollur of Thrissur district.

The dog has now been shifted to an animal shelter home.

Recently two elephants died in Kerala. One pregnant elephant died after consuming crackers wrapped in some fruits in Palakkad.

Another elephant died in Malappuram after it was found seriously injured in North Nilambur forest range of the district.
