After the news of Rudresh's murder spread, hundreds of RSS?and BJP?workers gathered near the police station. Traffic was thrown out of gear as they blocked the road and staged a protest.

The police pacified and dispersed the protesters as their demonstration was hampering vehicular movement. However, the protesters moved to the murder spot and said they would not budge till those behind the murder are arrested. Addressing the protesters, senior BJP?leader R?Ashoka said, “It is testing time for BJP and RSS and we have to remain calm. No one should take law into their hands as this will hamper investigations.”

Over 200 policemen, including Rapid Action Force personnel and Special Weapons and Tactics team and two Commando vehicles, were deployed on Kamaraj Road, Shivajinagar and surrounding areas to ensure that no untoward incidents occur.

Later, Ashoka told reporters that they will besiege the police commissioner's office if no arrests are made by Monday morning. “Since I was home minister, I know how the police work. They are trying to twist the probe by claiming that Rudresh had a few cases against him, which is not true. The police are saying that personal enmity led to his murder, which is also not true.” “During the recent Ganesha festival, Rudresh had installed a Ganesha idol near Shivaji Circle close to Shivajinagar, which no one could do for decades. While he was putting up banners for the festival, members of some other organisations had quarreled with Rudresh. But, it was not brought to the notice of the police as it was a petty issue. On Sunday, a few people enquired with the local residents about the person (Rudresh) who had distributed sweets during the Ganesha Chaturthi,” Ashoka said.

Quoting two of Rudresh's friends who were eye-witnesses to the murder, Ashoka said the assailants were speaking either Hindi or Urdu. However, he said he was not sure of it. Investigating officers said the eyewitnesses including Jayaram claimed that the assailants were speaking Hindi or Urdu and wearing monkey caps. The vehicle had no registration number plate. All these can be confirmed only after the assailants are nabbed, the officers said.

RSS?Bengaluru general secretary K?S?Sreedhar told DH, “We met senior police officers and they told us that they are probing the murder from all angles. On Monday, we will protest near Shivajinagar bus stand condemning Rudresh's murder. He was a sincere RSS and BJP worker. We had never received any complaints against him.” Ashoka said that some six years ago, Rudresh had fought with his neighbour over a petty issue.

Rudresh's sister Vennila said his two children aged six and seven had accompanied him to the RSS Patha Sanchalana. “One of Rudresh's friends had dropped the children at their house. A few minutes later, we got to know that Rudresh was murdered.”

Mangaluru, Feb 8: A speeding car fell off the newly-inaugurated Pumpwell flyover in the city after jumping the median and ramming into an oncoming car today.

At least four persons have suffered injuries in the mishap involving a Maruti Alto and a Renault Duster. The condition of two is said to be extremely critical. The other two have suffered minor injuries.

The accident took place when the driver of the speeding Alto which was heading towards Kasaragod from Udupi lost control over his vehicle.

Towards the end of the flyover, car rammed into the divider and then hit the ill-fated Renault Duster which was coming from the opposite direction. The Alto then fell off the bridge.

The accident caused traffic jam on the highway for some time. The flyover was inaugurated a week ago, after a decade long wait.

Bengaluru, June 5: Under the leadership of trouble-shooter D K Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress is planning a political ‘ghar wapsi’ to bring back leaders who quit the party and also rope in those from other parties.

Shivakumar, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, has constituted a 12-member committee headed by former minister Allum Veerabhadrappa to liaise to anchor this effort to bring back people into the party fold.

The committee comprises of former legislators B A Hasanabba, Ajaykumar Sarnaik, Abhaychandra Jain, Satish Sail, Prafulla Madhukar, former MPs R Dhruvanarayan and BN Chandrappa, MLA V Muniyappa, former mayor Sampath Raj, Mahila Congress leader Kripa Alva and former KPCC general secretary V Y Ghorpade.

This move comes more than a year after over a dozen Congress MLAs defected and joined the BJP, leading to the collapse of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government. Also, several influential leaders quit the party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections last year.

The constitution of this committee also coincides with disgruntlement brewing within the ruling BJP.

“Many people who left the party and others have applied (to join Congress). Many have met me also. I felt it wouldn't be right for me to make a decision. So, this committee has been constituted,” Shivakumar said. “They will process all applications and send it to the KPCC.”

According to Shivakumar, any person wanting to join the Congress should accept the party’s leadership and its ideology. “Importantly, they should be first accepted by the cadre. If there's no acceptance from the cadre, then what's the point?” he said.

Mangaluru/Bengaluru, Jan 23: A day after two senior functionaries of the BJP — a deputy chief minister and a political secretary to the chief minister — made provocative speeches against a minority community, Nalin Kumar Kateel, state president of the saffron party, on Wednesday issued a gag order, banning functionaries from talking on issues without the party’s approval.

Deputy CM Govind Karjol and Honnalli legislator MP Renukacharya had passed comments castigating Muslims, in the process seriously denting the image of the party which is trying to avoid controversies in its efforts to allay fears on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The comments come on the heels of Ballari City legislator Somashekara Reddy warning Muslims at a pro-CAA rally of repercussions if they do not fall in line.

Kateel said a gag order has been “clearly” communicated to all concerned at a recent meeting that he and chief minister BS Yediyurappa had chaired. “Our message to party functionaries is in line with what Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told his council of ministers and party MPs — to focus on their work and constituencies rather than comment on issues. Let them leave this task to official spokespersons of the party,” Kateel said.

However, it appears the message hasn’t gone through to Renukacharya, Yediyurappa’s political secretary. A day after courting controversy by saying anti-nationals were using mosques to store weapons, Renukacharya said he stood by his comments and launched a fresh tirade against madrasas, saying they were manipulating youth and encouraging terrorism.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Renukacharya said: “In our [temple-run] institutions, nothing anti-national is taught. We only teach values that are mandated for life. But at madrasas, youth are manipulated by teaching terrorism. Why do we need such schools? The majority of those accused of terrorism are Muslims.”

He immediately followed up this comment by saying he did not imply all Muslims were terrorists. The Honnalli MLA justified his comments saying he did not receive a single Muslim vote in the 2018 assembly elections. “They [Muslims] come to us seeking our help. They want the BJP for development, but when it comes to elections, they vote for Congress and JD(S),” Renukacharya said. He said no “special packages” will be distributed to Muslims in his constituency.
