Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 14: The Kerala leadership of Congresson Sunday welcomed AICC president Rahul Gandhi's 'U-turn' on the issue of women's entry into Sabarimala shrine, saying that, though belated, it would save the party further embarrassment in the state. Having earlier said that he was fully in favour of allowing women of all ages to pray at Sabarimala, Gandhi now sees merit in the argument of traditionalists, who are upholding the ban on entry of women aged between 10 and 50 to the shrine.
"I can see validity in the argument that tradition needs to be protected... and that women should have equal rights… After I spoke to people in Kerala, and our team there, I realised that the issue is much more complicated and both sides have a valid position. I would leave it to people to decide on this," Gandhi said in Dubai on Saturday.
