Sakshi Maharaj expresses regret in LS over Godse remarks

December 12, 2014

sakshi maharaiNew Delhi, Dec 12: A united opposition today forced BJP member Sakshi Maharaj to express regret in Lok Sabha and withdraw his remarks terming Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse a patriot.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi joined opposition members in raising slogans against the government and the BJP member.

Soon after Speaker Sumitra Mahajan referred to the December 13, 2001 Parliament attack, members from Congress and RJD referred to the BJP MP's controversial remarks.

When the Speaker informed that she has rejected notices on adjournment motion and suspension of Question Hour to take up the issue, opposition members from Congress, RJD, TMC and Left trooped into the Well raising slogans against the government and Sakshi Maharaj, who was present.

Amid slogans like 'Hey Ram, hey Ram; Gandhi ke hatyare ko diya samman' (eulogising Gandhi's killer) and 'doshi sarkar hai hai' (down with the guilty government), the House took up Question Hour.

As the pandemonium continued, Mahajan adjourned the House for 10 minutes up to 11.25 AM.

As soon as the House reassembled, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said nobody can accept eulogising the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi. He said the government and the BJP do not agree with the proposition of the MP.

When Congress members said they were not satisfied with the Minister's reply, Naidu shot back saying there are people who are "killing" the ideology of the Mahatma every day.

He said the opposition has no issue to raise still it is not allowing the House to function.

Disapproving the disruption, Mahajan said from tomorrow she will set aside the first five minutes for apologies.

Sakshi Maharaj rose to make a statement and said he respects the Mahatma and the House. "I withdraw my remarks. But my friends have no issue...Godse killed Gandhi long back but you killed the Mahatma's ideology in 1984 during anti-Sikh riots," he said.

As Congress members opposed his remarks, the BJP member said he expresses "regret" and "withdraws" his remarks.

As Opposition members shouted slogans in the Well, Sonia Gandhi was seen directing her party's MPs. From her seat in the front bench, she also joined them in raising slogans.

Leader of Congress party Mallikarjun Kharge said the opposition will not allow the government to have its way just because it has majority.

As the din continued, Naidu said the member has already withdrawn his remarks and the government and the party disassociate and condemn such statements. He said Gandhi never threatened anyone and went by rules and the Opposition was going against his teachings.

At the prodding of the Speaker, Sakshi Maharaj rose again to withdraw his remarks and "express regret before the House and the country." The proceedings were observed by a Pakistani delegation of legislators, who were seated in the Speaker's Gallery.

Earlier, Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia along with a dozen party MPs held a protest near the Gandhi statue in Parliament complex against the remarks of Sakshi Maharaj.

"Unless he (Maharaj) apologises in the House, we will not allow the House to function, Scindia said.

New Delhi, Feb 25: Condemning the violence in Delhi, the Congress on Tuesday demanded that the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and the Chief Minister of Delhi come forward to ensure peace and maintain brotherhood while rising above partisan politics.

"This is Gandhi, Nehru, Patel's India, can any Indian accept this mindless violence? Congress appeals to the people of Delhi to maintain communal harmony and thwart all attempts of the forces dividing the country on the basis of religion," Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told reporters.

Unabated violence and incidents of stone-pelting and murder in the national capital have shattered the nation, he said, while referring to the riots in northeast Delhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that continued for the third day, and demanded stern action against the culprits.

"Our appeal to the prime minister, the home minister and the Delhi chief minister is, can you rise to the occasion, leave aside your political partisanship and views, and become really not leaders of your parties but leaders of the society so that harmony, peace, and non-violence prevail," he said.

The Congress party will stand with the Centre and the Delhi government in every way to maintain brotherhood and harmony in the society, he said.

"Do not fail this country because you belong to different political parties," Surjewala said, adding this was a sincere appeal "on behalf of people of Delhi and the country" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

"There is no place for violence in Gandhi ji's India... Today there is a need to establish peace on the ground and maintain brotherhood," he said.

Surjewala said the party also prays for the speedy recovery of DCP Amit Sharma and the hundreds of other people who have been injured in the violence.

"We also condemn the firing at three journalists Arvind Gunasekar, Saurabh Shukla and Akash and pray for their good health," he said.

"We strongly condemn these brutal riots and demand that the culprits are identified and stern action is taken against the real culprits and miscreants. The Congress mourns the death of Head Constable Ratan Lal and others in the violence," Surjewala said.

In a startling revelation, cybersecurity researchers have claimed that a hacker has posted personal details of nearly 2.9 crore Indian job seekers at one of the hacking forums on the Dark Web for free.

As part of the regular sweep over the Deep Web and Dark Web, researchers from cybersecurity firm Cyble came across an interesting item, where a threat actor posted 2.3GB (zipped) file on one of the hacking forums.

"The leak actually has a lot of personal details of millions of Indians Job seekers from different states," Cyble said in its blog on Friday.

This breach includes sensitive information such as email, phone, home address, qualification and work experience etc from job seekers spanning across states, from New Delhi to Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Cybercriminals are always on the lookout for such personal information to conduct various nefarious activities such as identity thefts, scams, and corporate espionage.

"It appears to have originated from a resume aggregator service given the sheer volume and detailed information," it added.

Cyble indexed this information at ‘AmIbreached.com; – Cyble's data breach monitoring and notification platform.

Cyble researchers have identified a sensitive data breach on the dark web where an actor has leaked personal details of nearly 29 million Indian job seekers from various states.

"Cyble's team is still investigating this further and will be updating their article as they bring more facts to the surface,” it said in a statement.

Cyble said it has acquired the leaked data.

The same cyber security firm earlier exposed that Bengaluru-based edtech firm Unacademy was hacked.

According to Cyble researchers, nearly 22 million Unacademy user accounts were affected and the data was dumped and sold on Dark Web.

'We would like to assure our users that no sensitive information such as financial data or location has been breached," said Hemesh Singh, Co- Founder and CTO, Unacademy, in a statement.

In April, hackers sold personal data of a whopping 267 million Facebook users for just Rs 41,500 (approximately 500 Euros) that includes email addresses, names, Facebook IDs, dates of birth and phone numbers.

No passwords of the 267 million Facebook users were exposed by the hacker, according to Cyble.
