Salman Khan brings festivity to ticket counters with Sultan

July 7, 2016

salman22Mumbai, Jul 7: Bollywood’s ‘bhaijaan’ Salman Khan, with his latest Eid release Sultan, brought festivity to ticket counters on Wednesday.

Trade experts feel the movie, which features the superstar flex his muscles as a wrestler, will rock the box office with an opening day collection of close to Rs 40 crore and more during its five-day opening weekend.

Several theatres across the country are going “sold out” and are “houseful” — in tune with what the film fraternity had expected the scenario to be. And that did not get altered with a change in the date of the Eid celebrations. Eid was earlier to be celebrated in India on Wednesday, but the holiday date was later shifted to Thursday.

“The opening (of Sultan) has been huge. I thought since Eid is on Thursday it will affect the collections, but the opening has been great. It was close to 90 per cent occupancy on Day 1 and now I feel the film will collect close to Rs 40 crore on its opening day,” Mumbai-based distributor Rajesh Thadani told IANS.

The collection of the Yash Raj Films production will undoubtedly be bigger on Thursday, Thadani addd.

According to Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR Pictures, the response to the movie has been on expected lines.

“The film has opened with unprecedented curiosity. The advance sales which were open on Sunday were indicating towards a strong start at the box office today. That’s exactly what has happened,” Gianchandani said.

“Sultan is a huge blockbuster. The film will finish its run with a massive box office collection. The seat occupancy has been somewhere around 85 to 90 per cent since (Wednesday) morning,” he said.

A major reason behind such massive opening of the film is not just Salman’s huge fan following, but also the actor’s Eid luck factor. All of Salman’s films released on the auspicious occasion — Wanted, Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger, Kick and Bajrangi Bhaijaan — had raked in moolah upon their release.

Theatres are buzzing with activity courtesy Sultan, which is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and also stars Anushka Sharma.

The movie features Salman as a rustic wrestler from Haryana who goes on to win medals for the country, but loses his way after that. The plot revolves around how he reinvents his wrestler streak in mixed martial arts.

People are not only liking how the film reflects Salman’s aura but also the action-packed drama in it.

“Sultan has opened to full houses across INOX cinemas. Audiences are loving the film. Advance bookings for the weekend is extra-ordinary. Going by this trend, we expect ‘Sultan’ to create a new record for highest opening weekend and hopefully highest grossing film of all times,” said Rajender Singh, Vice-President, Programming and Distribution, INOX Leisure Ltd.

Devang Sampat, Director – Strategy Initiative, Cinepolis India said: “We had 25 per cent advance booking for Sultan with almost 55,000 tickets sold on Tuesday itself. It is the highest advance booking for any movie and clearly shows the power of Salman.

“We understand that, and have allocated 80 per cent shows to Sultan on Wednesday across our 252 screens and will follow the similar strategy for the long week. This will surely be the biggest blockbuster of the year till date.”

Distributor Sunil Bhansal said that apart from its commercial success, Sultan has also been applauded critically – which will help the film to remain strong at the box office in the coming days.

“The opening of Sultan is excellent, and the best part is that the reviews are also positive. Salman’s fans are going crazy in cinemas and they have been clapping and whistling throughout the film. The film will easily cross Rs 40 crore on Wednesday. Tomorrow the collections will only get bigger and better,” Bhansal said.

What has also worked in the movie’s favour, according to Amit Sharma, Managing Director, Miraj Entertainment Ltd, is that the team’s “planning and execution” of its marketing strategy was “perfect” through various offline and online media.

Mumbai, Jun 9: Actor Sonu Sood, who has been arranging transport for migrant workers stranded in Mumbai and has faced criticism from the Shiv Sena for "enacting a political script written by BJP", was stopped outside the Bandra Terminus in Mumbai by police from meeting labourers.

A Mumbai Police official said the actor was stopped by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) when he reached the station on Monday night to meet some labourers, and added that they have not received any complaint so far in this connection.

The migrant labourers were supposed to take the Shramik Special train from Bandra Terminus to Uttar Pradesh.

Mumbai's Nirmal Nagar police station's senior inspector Shashikant Bhandare told news agency PTI that "The actor was stopped by the RPF, not by us. He wanted to meet labourers who were going to their native place. We have not received any complaint regarding this till now."

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday wondered whether the BJP propped up Sonu Sood to "offer help" to migrant workers from north India stranded in Maharashtra amidst the lockdown, with the political motive to show the Uddhav Thackeray government in poor light.

In his weekly column 'Rokhthok' in Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana', Sanjay Raut questioned the sudden rise of "Mahatma" Sood on the social scene of Maharashtra during the lockdown.

Mr Raut also referred to an alleged "sting operation" against Sonu Sood ahead of the 2019 general elections, saying he had agreed to promote the BJP-led government at various platforms through his official social media accounts.

However, later that day Chief Minister and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray lauded Sonu Sood's initiative to arrange buses for stranded migrant workers.

The actor met Uddhav Thackeray at the latter's residence 'Matoshree' in suburban Bandra on Sunday night.

On Monday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh backed Sonu Sood for his work for stranded migrant workers, and questioned the Maharashtra government's criticism of the actor.

New Delhi, Jan 8: Actor Kangana Ranaut on Wednesday applauded director Meghna Gulzar and actor Deepika Padukone for making 'Chhapaak', a film based on acid-attack victims.

Kangana's sister Rangoli Chandel who herself is an acid-attack survivor took to Twitter to share a video of the actor where she is seen extending thanks to Gulzar and Padukone for making a film on the important issue.

"I saw the trailer of the film 'Chhapaak' recently, and after watching it I was reminded of the incident of acid attack on my sister Rangoli. Today, I and my family thank Meghna Gulzar and Deepika (Padukone) that they made a film on this issue. This will give courage to those people who gave up on their life after struggling with it," said Ranaut in the video.

"This film has placed a tight slap on the face of those monsters who succeeded in their act but not in their will. With this film, all those faces will glow that have been spoiled and their courage was broken by these monsters and the beauty of their spirit," the 'Panga' actor said.

Congratulating the team of the film, Kangana added, "I wish that with this New Year the sale of acid gets prohibited so that this country becomes free of acid-attacks. In the end many many congratulations to the team 'Chhapaak'."

The movie is based on the real-life acid attack survivor of Laxmi, who at the age of 15, was attacked allegedly by a spurned lover in 2005. Laxmi had to undergo several surgeries. Later, she took up the job of helping acid attack survivors and promoted campaigns to stop such attacks.

'Chhapaak' is being helmed by Meghna Gulzar and is being co-produced by Deepika and Fox Star Studios. The movie is set to hit theatres on January 10, 2020.

Mumbai, Jan 9: Actor Juhi Chawla on Wednesday said instead of constantly criticising the government, one should reflect on own conduct and talk about uniting rather than dividing.

The actor attended an event which aimed to counter "Free Kashmir (narrative), anti-India slogans, false propaganda and clear the misconception."

Juhi said as artistes, it's unfair to be questioned about incidents "just for a reaction" when they should be given time to truly understand the situation.

"We are going to work, thinking how to execute our task, then some incident happens somewhere and suddenly the media asks, 'what do you think about this?' We haven't understood the matter, people haven't understood the matter but you need a reaction.

"Let people understand, whether it's NRC or CAA, and what's is it about, why is this being talked about," Juhi told reporters.

The actor said it is sad that people talk about division more than unity.

"Everyone is quick to talk about dividing. Why don't we talk about uniting? Why does everyone say 'what is the government doing, why is it doing this?' but I say if you point one finger there then three fingers are at you.
