Saudi crown prince stresses importance of applying UN principles and the rule of law

Dubai, Mar 28: Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has stressed the importance of keeping in line with the principles of the United Nations and the rule of law.

He pointed out that the problems in the Middle East are due to ideologies that clash with UN principles and violate its laws and customs by interfering in the internal affairs of other states.

He made the comments in a speech after his meeting with Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres.

The crown prince said that Saudi Arabia is defending its interests and maintaining its security and is working with its allies in the Middle East to secure and stabilize the region.

He also stressed the Kingdom's keenness on finding political solutions to the Middle East's crises, in cooperation with the United Nations. He pointed out that the Kingdom is an active member and has contributed to protecting the interests of the United Nations and its laws.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres praised Saudi Arabia's global humanitarian efforts as he welcomed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the organization's headquarters on Tuesday.

Guterres expressed his appreciation for the humanitarian contributions in the world and to the Yemeni people, its support and funding of the humanitarian response plan in Yemen, and called on countries to contribute to this effort.

Guterres also renewed his condemnation of the targeting of ballistic missiles by the Houthi militia.

The crown prince and the secretary general attended the signing of the joint executive program between Saudi Arabia and the UN represented by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs for the purpose of supporting and financing the 2018 UN Humanitarian Response Plan in Yemen.

The agreement includes $1 billion from the Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, including $930 million to UN organizations and $70 million to restore ports and roads to increase relief and commercial imports.

The crown prince, currently in New York, has traveled to several US cities and held a number of high-level meetings with politicians and top business leaders after meeting President Donald Trump last week.

Prince Mohammed's visit is the first trip to the US after he was announced as the Saudi Arabia's crown prince last year.

Dubai, Apr 26: The Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) has instructed financial institutions in the country to search and freeze all bank accounts of Indian billionaire BR Shetty and his family along with those of companies where he has a stake.

The apex bank has also blacklisted several firms associated with Shetty along with their entire senior management.

In an advisory issued last week, CBUAE cited decisions of the Federal Attorney General and asked financial institutions to search and freeze any bank accounts, deposits or investments in the name of Shetty or his family members.

Financial institutions have been directed to stop transfers from these accounts and deny access to deposit boxes.

Currently in India and facing a string of charges, Shetty is the founder of NMC Health.

The heathcare provider was placed into administration by a UK court recently following an application by the Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) which alone has an exposure of $981 million (Dh3.6 billion).

Overall, UAE banks have a combined exposure of more than Dh8bn to NMC which owes money to Oman-based banks and financial institutions as well.

Probing credit facilities
The Central Bank has sought information about credit facilites extended to the Shettys along with details of their safe deposit boxes and the financial transfers they have made till date.

A similar advisory has been issued for NMC Healthcare and NMC Holding, based on the decision of the Head of Plenary Fund Prosecution.

The Central Bank has also blacklisted several companies associated with Shetty. Key staff members of these firms have been similarly blacklisted.

Beirut, Aug 4: A massive explosion has shaken the Lebanese capital of Beirut, with a very high number of casualties expected.

A warehouse at the Beirut Port caught fire on Tuesday afternoon, triggering a huge explosion, Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) reported.

Several smaller explosions were heard before the bigger one occurred.

Abbas Ibrahim, the head of Lebanon’s General Security, said that “highly explosive materials” confiscated earlier had been stored at the site.

Footage shared on social media captured the moment of the bigger explosion, with a colossal shock wave seen traveling fast across several hundreds of meters and shrouding the area in thick smoke.

The blast left enormous material damage to the surrounding buildings and structures. But it was not immediately known how big an area was affected.

There was also no immediate casualty count. Graphic amateur video from the scene showed bodies strewn on the ground, with their clothes blown off.

The NNA said rescue operations were underway. Ambulances were seen heading toward the scene in central Beirut.

Lebanese LBC television channel quoted Lebanon’s Health Minister Hamad Hasan as saying that the blast had caused a “very high number of injuries” and “extensive damage.”

Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud said an unspecified number of firefighters dispatched to extinguish the initial fire had been killed in the explosion.

“As they were putting out the fire, the explosion took place and we’ve [lost them],” he said, breaking down on live TV.

The explosion comes at a time when the Arab country is passing through its worst economic and financial crisis in decades, and amid rising tensions with Israel.

Riyadh, Mar 24: General Directorate of Passports (Jawazat) on Tuesday asked all expatriates in the Kingdom, who have a final exit visa or an exit and reentry visa, to quickly cancel them before their expiry. This is to avoid the prescribed fines for not availing of these visas before their expiry date, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The new measure was taken following the Saudi government’s suspension of international flights as part of the preventive and precautionary measures to stem the spread of new coronavirus. The Jawazat asked expatriates to verify the validity of such visas and cancel them through Ministry of Interior’s electronic service portals of Absher or Muqeem.

It underlined the need to adhere to the regulations and instructions in order to avoid fines prescribed by law against the violators.
