Mangaluru, Jan 1: Hundreds of activists of Social Democratic Party of India on Friday, January 1, staged a demonstration in front of the office of deputy commissioner in the city to register their protest against decision of Mangaluru city to ban the entry of Islamic scholar Dr Zakir Naik into Mangaluru.

The protesters slammed city police and Congress government of state for failing to differentiate between religious leaders and communal hate-mongers. They also accused the police and administration of bowing down to the pressure of Sangh Parivar.

Dr Zakir Naik was supposed to deliver a talk on ‘What is Islam’ at an interfaith peace conference previously scheduled for January 2 at Nehru Maidan in Mangaluru. However, the South Karnataka Salafi Movement (SKSM), the host of the event decided to postpone it by two months as per the advice of Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara in the wake of controversial ban order.

Addressing the protesters, Ilyas Mohammed Thumbay, SDPI general secretary, said that the state government, Dakshina Kannada district administration and police have been green signal to Sangh Parivar to take law into their hands.

“Neither district administration nor the police department took action against the RSS when its cadres held public meeting and took out march holding batons and swords in hand in Moodbidri violating prohibitory orders. On the other hand the police banned the entry of Zakir Naik and clamped prohibitory orders when a Muslim organization decided to host a peace convention,” he complained.

He also said that SDPI was denied permission by the district administration to hold awareness campaign against communal terrorism. “We wanted create awareness against communal terrorism. But, you are indirectly supporting communal terrorists by denying permission for such campaigns,” he said.

Mr Thumbay went on to claim that the Congress ministers in coastal Karnataka including Dakshina Kannada district in charge minister B Ramanath Rai are afraid of Sangh Parivar elements.

He also recalled a media sting operation wherein MLC Ganesh Karnik was caught admitting that the RSS had managed to strengthen its hold on police department and that the 60 per cent of police personnel hail from RSS back ground.

Dalit Sangharsha Samithi leader Ananda Mitthabail, former mayor K Ashraf, SDPI leaders Abdul Latif Puttur, Alphonso Franco, Akram Hasan, Haneef Khan Kodaje, Ataullah were present among others.

We appreciate that SDPI is raising their on every occasion when injustice was done by any person or department. Zakir Naik's talks are academic and full of knowledge. He has all the rights to say his words. He never created law and order problems. Administration should reign on those who are causing violence, not a scholar...

Bhopal, Mar 18: Congress leader Digvijay Singh's detention by police in Bengaluru is display of "dictatorship and Hitlarshahi" by the BJP, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath said here on Wednesday.

Singh staged a protest near a Bengaluru resort this morning where rebel MLAs of Madhya Pradesh Congress are staying, and demanded that he be allowed to meet them.

Singh, who has been detained by the police, accused the BJP of holding the MLAs captive and said that he would go on a "hunger strike".

Reacting to this, Nath said if the need arises he would also go to the Karnataka capital.

"Preventing Congress Rajya Sabha candidate and other ministers from meeting MLAs, misbehave with them, forcibly taken them into custody is totally a dictatorship and hitlershahi (sic)," Nath said in a tweet.

"Entire country is watching how an elected government is being made unstable and how BJP is murdering democratic values," Nath said.

"Why they are not allowing them to meet MLAs. What BJP is afraid of. BJP is playing a dirty political game in the state," the chief minister tweeted.

Demanding immediate release of detained Congress leaders, Nath said that democratic norms and Constitutional values are being stifled.

Later speaking to reporters, the CM said, "Why the BJP is afraid of presenting 16 MLAs here (Bhopal)? What is the problem in one person (Singh) meeting with 16 legislators?"

Nath reiterated that his government had proven majority on floor of the House in the last 15 months since coming to power.

Amid political uncertainty in Madhya Pradesh, the state Congress Legislature Party on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre and the BJP-led Karnataka government to grant it access to communicate with its rebel MLAs staying in Bengaluru.

The apex court had also directed the Kamal Nath government to respond by Wednesday to a plea by senior BJP leader Shivraj Singh Chouhan seeking immediate floor test in the Assembly.

Bengaluru, Feb 12: Mohammed Nalapad, the rogue son of Karnataka Congress leader NA Harris, who is out on bail in a 2018 case of him bashing up a man at a pub, has now rammed his luxury car into vehicles, injuring four people on Bengaluru road.

The incident took place on Sunday on the Ballari Road where Nalapad was rash driving his car. The car hit a biker and an autorickshaw, injuring four people. He immediately got off his car and fled riding a friend's car.

The biker has suffered a fracture in his leg and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to police, soon after the accident a man appeared before police to claim responsibility for the accident.

Ravikante Gowde, Joint Commissioner of Police said, "A man named Balakrishna came to surrender as the one who was driving the car. Investigation has, however, showed that it was Nalapad who was driving when he met with the accident. The investigating officer has issued him a notice to appear before the police."

BJP spokesperson S Prakash has said, "A case under the Goonda Act should be filed against Nalapad and the court should take cognisance of this and cancel his bail. The father has no control over son. He is a serial offender who is harming the public on a repeated basis."

Nalapad was earlier arrested in 2018 in the Bengaluru pub incident in which he and his associate bashed up the son of a prominent businessman in the city. Nalapad Harris is out on bail after remaining in judicial custody for three months in the case of attempt to murder after the 2018 midnight brawl.
