Mangalore, Oct 6: The second of two hovercrafts sanctioned Indian Coast Guard along Karnataka coast arrived in Mangalore on Monday, exactly a fortnight after the induction of the State's first hovercraft.

Hovercraft H-198 the third series of Air Cushion vehicle, built in the United Kingdom, arrived on Monday at Panambur Beach, near the ICG, Karnataka Headquarters where it will be permanently based.

The 21-metre long vehicle will float over the seas on a cushion of air created by two propellers, reaching a maximum speed of 45 knots. The hovercraft is commanded by Commandant Amitabh Banerjee and is armed with heavy machine guns and state-of-the-art communication and navigation equipment including radar and worldwide satellite communication.

The H-198 joined the Hovercraft H-196 which arrived on September 22, and the two became the Coast Guard's fastest vehicles, allowing them to effectively keep an eye on the 320-km Karnataka coastline.

The hovercrafts are equipped to undertake multifarious tasks such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and rendering assistance to small boats at sea. The amphibious craft can operate on land as well as over sea, and will be especially useful in shallow seas, marshy land and isolated islands which cannot be accessed by conventional boats.

Each craft will have a 12-member crew who have obtained specialised training in London.

Shivamogga, Jun 30: The organic farmers' market in Shivamogga in Karnataka has seen a rise in the demand for organic fruits and vegetables in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents of nearby areas frequently visit the market to get fresh produce.

According to Sridhar, a farmer who sells his produce in the market, the demand for organic fruits and vegetables was very low before the coronavirus outbreak.

"I have been involved in organic farming for the last two decades but there was no real market. Since these days everyone is trying to boost their immunity, we are getting a lot of positive response from the locals," he told news agency.

Sridhar and other farmers come from villages near the city. They are authentic organic farmers under the Vikas Trust and Savayava Krishi Parivar, a federation of organic farmer's families based in Karnataka, and they promote pesticide and fertiliser free agriculture.

Gurumel Singh, who often comes to the local market said, "My family has started eating more organic fruits and vegetable now because of the pandemic. We have been told it is important to take care of our health and organic fruits and vegetables are good immunity boosters. The fruits I buy from the organic market are also much sweeter than the ones I get elsewhere."

Bengaluru, Jun 29: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah along with Congress leaders on Monday rode a bicycle from his residence to Minsk Square to protest against the hike in fuel prices.

KPCC President DK Shivakumar was also seen riding a bicycle along with other members of the Congress party to Minsk Square where the party staged the protest.

During the protest, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar along with party leaders carried a bike on their shoulders.

"We are carrying out our duty today. At the time of the UPA government's rule, when there was any hike in fuel prices, several BJP leaders had made bold statements. It is ironic that today, at the time of this COVID-19 pandemic, even despite the price of barrels falling, they have increased fuel prices," said Shivakumar.

"In Delhi, diesel prices have exceeded petrol prices. We must protest against this. The DCP can file whatever case he wants to. Despite several cases against us, we have never been shaken up. They are inconveniencing people and causing the people to burn in hell. These people must be protected," he added.

With the hike in fuel prices, the petrol prices stand at Rs 83.04/litre (increase by Rs 0.05), and the diesel prices stand at Rs 76.58/litre (increase by Rs 0.13) in Bengaluru, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

The Congress has termed the increase in the prices of petrol and diesel as "unjust" and "thoughtless", and urged the Central government to roll back the increase with immediate effect and pass on the benefit of low oil prices directly to the people.
