Dharwad, Apr 28: Janata Dal (Secular) faced a major setback as its official candidate for the Hubballi-Dharwad West Assembly constituency Altaf Kittur withdrew his nomination papers here on Friday.

Further, Mr. Kittur, who is also the municipal councillor, has announced that he is quitting the party while condemning the style of functioning of the party leaders. It may be recalled that there was confusion in the beginning as two persons, Gururaj Hunasimarad and Altaf Kittur, filed their nomination papers as Janata Dal(S) candidates and both submitted their B forms.

However, Mr. Hunasimarad’s nomination papers were rejected during scrutiny on technical grounds. With Mr. Kittur withdrawing his nomination papers now, the Janata Dal(S) is thrown out of the contest and it is going to be a straight fight between Tamatagar and Arvind Bellad of the BJP.

A total of 21 candidates withdrew their nomination papers leaving 98 in the fray in seven Assembly constituencies of the district.
