Shiv Sena-BJP set to kiss and make up by Monday: Fadnavis on course to be CM

October 25, 2014

Mumbai, Oct 25: After all the shadow-boxing and public posturing, the BJP appears to have succeeded in getting the Shiv Sena exactly where it wants it: as part of the Maharashtra government, but without undue clout.

Modi-Uddhav-AdityaSoon after the assembly results made the BJP the single largest party with 122 seats — 22 short of the half-way mark — the Sena had started playing hard-to-get, but its game went awry when the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) announced unilateral support for the BJP. This enabled the latter to announce that it will form the government, with or without the Sena.

With a huge stake in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (where it is in alliance with the BJP), and at the Centre (where the Sena has a cabinet minister and expects more berths in the next reshuffle), the Sena saw the writing on the wall and decided that discretion is the better part of valour. It appears to have given up its old insistence of a 50:50 split of state ministries, and has accepted the reality that the BJP is now big brother.

The upshot: instead of a minority government, Maharashtra will now have a stable BJP-Sena coalition with 186 seats between them in a 288-member assembly. Add another 14-15 members from the smaller parties and independents, and the coalition could have nearly 200 members in its tally.

The final shape of the power-sharing arrangement and the coalition will be visible on Monday, when Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP general secretary JP Nadda arrive in Mumbai to kick off the process of government formation. They will hold consultations with the newly-elected legislators and elect Devendra Fadnavis, state BJP President, as leader of the legislature party.

Once this is done, Governor Vidyasagar Rao will invite Fadnavis to form the government. It appeared as if Nitin Gadkari, the Union Surface Transport and Rural Development Minister, had also thrown his hat in the ring when some Vidarbha MLAs lobbied for him as CM. But Gadkari said he was not keen to return to Maharashtra politics, which means the leadership issue is now settled in favour of Fadnavis. Both Fadnavis and Gadkari are from Vidarbha.

As part of the thaw in the Sena-BJP relationship, there are indications that all Shiv Sena MPs, 18 from the Lok Sabha and three from the Rajya Sabha, will attend a Diwali Milan dinner hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for NDA MPs this Sunday (26 October). If all goes well, it would signal that ties between BJP and Sena have been mended, or at least have not broken down.

Sources told Firstpost that backroom talks over the last two days, held at various levels, helped Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray dilute his position on the Maharashtra power-sharing arrangement. He is now said to be inclined to accept the revised terms and conditions. The sources said that “he could not have been an equal partner in the Maharastra government but only an ally where mutual respect and coalition dharma is maintained by both sides.”

BJP sources said the party considers the Sena its “natural ally” and this means it should not unnecessarily criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi or create tensions in the next state government. The BJP now expects greater circumspection in what the Sena mouthpiece, Saamna, writes. The current bout of pre-election tensions was triggered by negative write-ups in Saamna.

The BJP, by taking its time to offer an olive branch to the Sena, has forced the latter to take a more realistic view of the ground situation in the state. For its part, despite the bravado of setting up a minority government in Maharashtra, the BJP’s top leadership recognised that this can never result in stability. Hence the move make up with the Sena.

Despite claiming that it had not rejected the NCP’s offer of support, the party leadership was clear that taking this support would be politically too costly. The party was not so worried about what the NCP could demand in return, but was wary of the negative public perceptions it would have generated, especially for Modi, who called NCP a “naturally corrupt party” during the election campaign.

By the time Rajnath Singh lands in Mumbai on Monday, the alliance issue would, thus, in all likelihood have been clinched.

New Delhi, Jun 26: "Iam Indira Gandhi's granddaughter, not an undeclared BJP spokesperson like some of the opposition leaders," Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said, as she alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government is threatening her through various departments for speaking the truth. Priyanka Gandhi's dare to the Uttar Pradesh government came days after the Agra administration asked her to withdraw within 24 hours the claim of high coronavirus deaths in the district.

The Congress general secretary in-charge UP East has accused the Yogi Adityanath government of indulging in propaganda instead of dealing with the pandemic. "As a public servant, my duty is towards the people of Uttar Pradesh. And this duty is to put out the truth before them and not to put forth government propaganda. The UP government is wasting its time by threatening me through its various departments," Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

"They can take whatever action they want, I will keep putting forth the truth. I am Indira Gandhi's granddaughter not an undeclared BJP spokesperson like some of the opposition leaders," she said. This week, Priyanka Gandhi repeatedly attacked the Uttar Pradesh government over the "high" COVID-19 mortality rate in Agra and on other issues related to the state government's handling of the pandemic.

New Delhi, Feb 16: Just an hour ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Arvind Kejriwal invited the people of Delhi again for his oath-taking ceremony at Ramlila Maidan today.

Referring himself as "son of Delhi", the AAP convener today tweeted saying, "Delhiites, your son is going to take oath as Delhi chief minister for the third time. You must come to bless your son".

The AAP national convener will be sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Delhi for the third time in a row.

Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to take oath along with other ministers at Ramlila Maidan.

On Saturday, Kejriwal, through a tweet, has said that autorickshaw drivers, students, teachers, doctors, labourers, etc will be the "chief guests".

The guest list put out by the AAP includes ''Delhi ke Nirmata''- people who contributed to the development of the city during the last five years.

These include Sumit Nagal, a Delhi government school student and an international Tennis player, Laxman Chaudhry an auto driver, Manu Gulati a teacher and "one of the many architects of Delhi Governance Model", Dalbir Singh a farmer, Ratan Jamshed Batliboi - the architect of the famous Signature Bridge among others.

By winning 62 seats by cashing in on the plank of development, his party nearly repeated its 2015 performance, sweeping the Assembly polls in the face of a high-voltage campaign by the BJP, which had fielded a battery of Union Ministers and Chief Ministers in its electioneering, spearheaded by Home Minister Amit Shah.

The BJP marginally improved its tally, managing just eight seats from its 2015''s tally of three seats. The Congress failed to open its account in the second successive election.

New Delhi, May 29: In a powerful display of inter community solidarity, a team of Sikh volunteers visited Delhi's Jama Masjid and sanitized the 17th century monument.

As the national capital battled coronavirus, the historic Jama Masjid is closed for congregational prayers. However, the team of Sikh volunteers effectively sanitized the monument to ensure it is safe for the caretakers and visitors.

The volunteers affiliated with United Sikhs organization also met Naib Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Shaban Bukhari during the visit. The latter thanked the team for the humanitarian gesture and underlined the need for all sections of humanity to unite in the face of this crisis.

"The Sikh community has always displayed exemplary commitment to humanity and we are thankful to the United Sikhs' team for their initiative. This enormous crisis facing the human race can be fought off only if all communities, nations and people unite and fight it together. In recent weeks we have seen heart wrenching images of misery in the country as thousands of migrant workers return to their villages. At the same time we have also seen positive stories of different people uniting to help and feed them. We hope that together we will overcome this crisis," said Syed Shaban Bukhari, Naib Shahi Imam, Jama Masjid, Delhi.

Shaban Bukhari has also advised Muslims across the country to strictly avoid congregational prayers this Eid and pray at homes. He is young leader, who really believes in secularism. For him, humanity and kindness come first.
