Karwar, Sept 14: Furious at students using mobile phones on the campus, a college principal in Sirsi smashed their handsets on Thursday.
RM Bhat, principal of MES Chaitanya PU College, had repeatedly warned his students not to use cellphones. Some allegedly used phones even in the classroom to exchange messages.
A few days ago, Bhat had reportedly warned students that if he caught them using phones, they would be destroyed in the college itself. On Thursday, he conducted a surprise check and seized 16 mobiles from students. Then he asked students to assemble and smashed the phones with a hammer. His action attracted criticism as well as appreciation.
While some argued that mobiles are essential for girl students who come from remote villages, others said mobiles are being misused by students and they don't concentrate on studies.
