The police said that the blast occurred in a house in Tsunami colony in Idinthakarai village, which is five km from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that those killed included a woman and three children, the police said.
A senior police officer who rushed to the spot said that more than five houses were damaged in the mishap. Police suspect that the bombs were kept in one of the fishermen’s house as they usually hurl bombs into the sea.
He said that rescue teams rushed to the spot to clear the debris and extricate people believed trapped under it.
DIG of Police Sumith Saran and Superintendent of Police Vijendra Bidari also rushed to the spot.
