New Delhi, Jan 5: A 32-year-old software engineer allegedly committed suicide after critically injuring his wife at a high-end apartment in Dwarka this morning.

Amit Bachchan and Shivani got married in November last year and neighbours told police that they had a strained relationship fraught with frequent quarrels.

Last night, Amit returned home after a party and an argument broke out between the couple, police said.

Amit hit Shivani at head with some sharp-edged object.

Shivani, who works in a private company in Gurgaon, suffered severe head injuries.

Later, Amit hanged himself from the ceiling fan using the cable which later broke and the body fell down, police said.

Amit's mother Chandrakanta (58) was found locked in a room while Shivani was locked in another room of their flat in Platinum Heights apartment in Sector 18-B of Dwarka. The incident came to light at around 5:30 AM when a PCR call was made by a security guard of the building after hearing Shivani's call for help.

"A police team reached the spot and found the eighth floor flat bolted from inside. We had to enter the house from a neighbour's balcony," said Additional DCP (southwest) Chinmoy Biswal.

Shivani was found injured. She could not make a phone call because her mobile was in another room. She had also thrown a flower pot from the window of her room to garner attention but it went unnoticed. Later, her screams were heard by a security guard who made a PCR call.

Amit's body was lying on the floor with a TV cable wrapped around his neck.

"We have not recovered any suicide note from the spot. There are no signs of forced entry in the house and prima facie it seems that Amit tried to kill his wife and then committed suicide.

"Shivani, who is out of danger now has told us that she was sleeping in another room when Amit attacked her," said Biswal.

Police is investigating the case under section 174 CrPc and looking into other angles as well. Crime and forensic teams have picked circumstantial evidence from the spot.

Bachchan's body has been sent for postmortem, police said.

Noida, Jul 28: A doctor admitted at a private hospital in Noida has been accused of sexually harassing a patient in his isolation ward, where both were undergoing treatment for COVID-19, the police said.

The 20-year-old woman, in her complaint to the police, alleged that the incident took place on Monday and based on that a case was filed at the local expressway police station, they said.

A senior police official said an investigation is underway and there might be lapses on part of the hospital which allegedly admitted a man and a woman in the same isolation ward, in violation of the norms.

The woman and the doctor had tested positive for coronavirus last week, according to officials.

"The woman was in the isolation ward of the private hospital. There was a man, a medical practitioner, who too was infected with coronavirus and was sharing the ward with her," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Noida, Ranvijay Singh said.

He said the woman alleged molestation and upon being informed, the police immediately lodged a case and initiated a probe into the matter.

"There appears to be some irresponsibility on part of the hospital too. We are communication with the medical departments to check whether the patients were being kept in accordance with the guidelines," Mr Singh said.

He said the accused is still in isolation but the police will reach out for his statement following due protocols of COVID-19.

"All necessary action will be taken as per the truth that will emerge after a thorough investigation," Mr Singh said.
