South India must unite under Dravidian identity: Kamal Haasan

Chennai, Jan 18: Veteran star Kamal Haasan today said the term 'Dravidian' should be expanded beyond Tamil Nadu to all southern states which will help dictate terms to the central government.

"Dravidian is not related to Tamil Nadu alone. If we celebrate Dravidian across South India this discrimination would end." he said. Kamal said he intended to launch his political tour of Tamil Nadu on February 21 from the residence of late President APJ Abdul Kalam at Ramanathapuram, which is also the hometown of the actor. Kamal made the comments in a weekly column in Tamil weekly 'Ananda Vikatan.'

The top actor said he too shared the vision of Kalam who dreamt of a "good Tamil Nadu." By launching his political tour from the residence of the late leader, he would be moving forward towards that goal, the actor said. Haasan, recalling his conversation with the former President while travelling in a flight years ago, hailed Kalam for his great qualities.

Praising Kalam, the actor said he lost opportunities to visit the late leader's residence at Ramanathapuram. Recalling that for him too Ramanathapuram was the hometown where he was born, Kamal said he felt that he should visit Kalam's residence by creating an opportunity this time round. "I think that I should start my tour from his (Kalam's) residence." The former president dreamt of leaving behind a "good Tamil Nadu," he said.

"I too have the same thought, I move towards that and my full-time job is not to be engaged only in criticism. My goal is people's development." Kamal had often faced criticism for trying to do politics only through "twitter." Yesterday, the actor said he seconded the view of his co-star Rajinikanth on ties between them saying "time is a good medicine."

Rajinikanth, when asked about forging ties with Kamal, had said yesterday that"only time will be able to tell that. Let us see in due course of time." Kamal, to a question on spiritual politics, however, said Rajinikanth and he will be pursuing their own respective political line of thoughts. Rajinikanth had spoken about spiritual politics while announcing his political debut. According to him, it meant a politics beyond caste, creed and religion and one that focused on good governance sans corruption.

Bengaluru, May 27: Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa on Wednesday said that his government will re-open temples, mosques and churches in the state after May 31.

"We are going to open temples, mosques and churches in the state after May 31, he said while speaking to media in Bengaluru.

The Chief Minister added that the "guidelines will be followed" as suggested by experts for opening the worship places.

"We have no objections to open malls and cinema halls, but we are waiting for the guidelines of the central government, Prime Minister will take decisions to allow malls and cinemas to open," he added.

Yediyurappa has said that people from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu will not be allowed in the state till May 31.

New Delhi, Mar 7: No country in the world says everybody is welcome, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday, hitting out at those criticising India over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Jaishankar criticised the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for its criticism on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, saying its director had been wrong previously too and one should look at the UN body's past record on handling the Kashmir issue.

"We have tried to reduce the number of stateless people through this legislation. That should be appreciated," he said when asked about the CAA at the ET Global Business Summit. "We have done it in a way that we do not create a bigger problem for ourselves."

"Everybody, when they look at citizenship, have a context and has a criterion. Show me a country in the world which says everybody in the world is welcome. Nobody says that," the minister said.

The external affairs minister said moving out of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) was in the interest of India's business.

Asked about the UNHRC director not agreeing with India on the Kashmir issue, Jaishankar said: "UNHRC director has been wrong before.

"UNHRC skirts around cross-border terrorism as if it has nothing to do with country next door. Please understand where they are coming from; look at UNHRC's record how they handled Kashmir issue in past," he added.

Mumbai, Apr 20: At least 53 media persons from Mumbai have tested positive for coronavirus, a city civic official said on Monday.

During a special camp organised at the Azad Maidan here on April 16 and 17 for COVID-19 testing of scribes, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) collected swab samples of 171 mediapersons, including electronic and print media journalists, photographers and cameramen.

“Out of the 171 mediapersons, 53 tested positive for coronavirus,” BMC spokesperson Vijay Khabale said, adding that most of those who tested positive are asymptomatic at present.

All the mediapersons found infected with coronavirus will be kept in isolation and a process was underway to find out suitable places to the purpose, he said.

Efforts were also on to trace their high and low risk contacts.

Till Sunday, Mumbai recorded 2,724 coronavirus cases and 132 deaths due to the disease.
