New Delhi, Jan 23: A 27-year-old Uber cab driver was killed after a speeding BMW hit his vehicle near IIT Flyover on Outer Ring Road in South Delhi on Sunday night. The accused, a young man in his early twenties according to witnesses, is on the run.

BMW

The victim has been identified as Nazrul, a Gurgaon resident who hails from West Bengal. He is survived by a wife and two children, aged four and two years.

The accident happened around 11:15 p.m. and both the vehicles had a single occupant each – the respective drivers.

Dileep, who was at the spot during the time of the accident and helped to evacuate Nazrul from his car, said the speed of the BMW was very high when it hit Nazrul’s Wagon R from behind.

“I was barely twenty steps ahead of the victim’s car when I heard the sound of a vehicle crashing into the other. The sound was so loud like there was a bomb blast and as I turned back, the Wagon R was spinning on the road due to the impact of the hit. I made a PCR call as I walked towards the car,” Dileep recounted.

The BMW driver also approached the damaged car and enquired whether the victim was alright. He left without waiting for a reply, Mr. Dileep said.

Mr. Dileep meanwhile continued his effort to pull the driver out and was joined by a passer by in the rescue mission. He managed to unfasten the seatbelt and pull Nazrul out.

“As crowds started to gather around and traffic came to a halt, the BMW driver used the situation to his advantage and managed to flee. He barely stayed there two or three minutes after the accident,” said Mr. Dileep.

He added that when Nazrul was taken out, he was alive but appeared to be in immense pain. “There was no bleeding, however, not a drop,” he said.

It was with the help of another passerby, who agreed to let his car be used for rushing the victim to a nearby hospital, medical aid was provided to the victim. He, however, died during treatment.

Police are now trying to trace the owner of the vehicle with registration number CH01AZ2534 and seeking legal opinion on whether to register the case as a case of culpable homicide or one of causing death by negligence along with rash and negligent driving.

A second crash

Even as the cops were waiting for the BMW to be towed away from the busy road, another vehicle rammed into it. Nearly two hours after the first accident, a speeding SUV rammed into the stranded BMW. As people gathered around the offending vehicle and made attempts to stop it, the woman driving it sped away. Nobody was injured this time.

Palghar, Mar 7: Police have arrested a man for allegedly cheating several shopkeepers in Maharashtra's Thane, Pune and Nashik by making phone calls in a woman's voice, police said on Friday.

The accused, Shashikant Ambekar (42), a resident of Palghar, was arrested in the last week of February, they said.

"He used to note down the phone numbers mentioned on different shops and call the owners in a woman's voice to order some things from them. He would tell them that he had a Rs 2000 currency note and needed change," an official said.

"He would ask the shopkeepers to send smaller denomination notes for exchange. He would wait at the entrance of buildings and when the delivery man arrived, he used to tell that he was there on behalf of the ''caller woman''.

"He would then take the currency notes from the delivery man saying he would get the Rs 2,000 note from the woman. However, he would disappear from the scene," the official said.

Police have seized Rs 1,85,000 from the accused and found that so far he has committed 22 similar crimes in different parts of the state.

Muthuraj was later remanded to the judicial custody till July 17.

Bareilly, Jan 9: In a bizarre development, a woman has been arrested for inflicting 101 cuts on her sister-in-law in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district, the police said on Thursday.

The woman was practicing exorcism to cure her father who had been ailing for some time.

The woman, Moni, was helped by her husband Mooli and brother Raju in the act, which happened on Tuesday.

The sister-in-law Renu who suffered the cuts, was given 300 stitches on her face and other parts of the body by the doctors.

Renu has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where her condition is said to be serious.

Moni, 30, has been sent to jail while Mooli and Raju are absconding.

Baradari police station officer inspector Naresh Tyagi said that a complaint had been filed by Renu's brother under section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC.

"We will record Renu's statements in a day or two once she is stable and in a condition to talk to us. We have sent Moni to jail," the inspector said.

Renu, a resident of Ganghora village in Bareilly, was married to Sanjeev around eight years ago.

Her father-in-law, Jagdish, fell ill a few months ago.

"Accused Moni, who practices exorcism, decided to cure her father by initiating the act. Going by superstitious beliefs, they inflicted as many as 101 cuts on Renu's face and body. It cannot be ruled out that they wanted to sacrifice her to complete the act," police inspector said.

On Tuesday night, the accused had locked Renu's husband and mother-in-law in another room when they tried to stop them from making her a scapegoat.

When the accused trio started inflicting cuts on Renu, she struggled to get out of their clutches and somehow managed to escape from the house.

She had run a short distance when she collapsed and became unconscious. A police constable on patrol reportedly spotted her and she was taken to a district hospital. Once regaining her consciousness, she narrated her ordeal to the police who then informed her parents.
