Mangaluru, Sep 10: A small group of activists of Campus Front of India (CFI), who visited the Mangaluru Rural Police Station on Saturday morning to submit a memorandum urging the cops to drop “false cases” slapped against a few college student, were greeted with lathis.

The development comes almost two weeks after a CFI-led protest forced the Srinivas College of Pharmacy, located at Valacchil on the outskirts of the city to withdraw its decision to ban hijab for new batch of students.

At least five persons were hospitalized after the unexpected laticharge on the premises of the police station. College students Hifaz and Muzammil, who suffered injuries during lathicharge were taken to Government Wenlcok Hospital. On the other hand, Sub Inspector Sudhakar and two constables-Chandra Shekhar and Vincent-also got admitted to the hospital, claiming that they were attacked by the CFI activists.

Led by CFI Dakshina Kannada district president Mohammed Athaullah, around 15 activists had been to the police station along with a copy of memorandum.

“We neither staged a protest nor raised slogans. Our intention was just to handover a memorandum to the police requesting them to drop the false ragging case' registered against a few students,” said one of the CFI activists, adding that the complainants have also admitted that their principal had forced them to do so.

He claimed that the authorities of Srinivas College of Pharmacy took revenge against the CFI activists for protesting hajab ban two weeks ago. “In fact all students of the college are united. However, recently the principal forced a few first year Bachelor of Pharmacy students to lodge ragging complaint against their seniors who had taken part in the last protest,” he said.

“Those who are facing ragging charge are innocent students. Being a student organisation, CFI raised its voice for them and will continue to do so,” he said, and added that the attempt to curb the students' movement will not succeed.

Dont blame our college for no reason. This case has no link with hijab ban issue. Actually there was no need for a protest two weeks ago. College was ready to withdraw hijab ban if the parents of the students collectively wanted it. CFI just tried to get political milage by staging a protest. And now they are supporting ragging accused. what a shame!

I dont think anyone will lodge false ragging complaint. Something they might have done in the past. the college used the opportunity. CFI wanted to become hero and turned zero.

Very sad. What was the need for the police to cane the CFI activists? They could have accepted the memorandum and throw it into dust bin if the demand was not genuine. Unfortunately this happened within a day after leaders of different community came together for a better mangaluru.

May 6: Congress general secretary KC Venugopal on Tuesday termed as "inhumane" the government's decision to "impose excessive costs" on NRIs and expatriates for bringing them into the country from COVID-19-affected nations.

He demanded that the central government fly in the poor and vulnerable free of cost while charge the others with normal fares instead of high costs.

"The central government's decision to impose excessive costs on NRIs flying in special flights from the Covid-affected countries is an inhumane act," he said in a statement.

Venugopal said it was due to protests by a large number of expatriates and their relatives as well as the general public over the past few days that the central government took the decision to bring back Indian citizens from abroad.

"However, it is cruel that the Central government has taken advantage of this plight of expatriates by increasing the price of air fares up to three times. This is inhumane," Venugopal said in his statement.

He urged the Centre to take urgent steps to provide free travel to the most vulnerable, unemployed, sick and pregnant women and to others on normal fare.

Air India will operate 64 repatriation flights for a week from May 7 while the Navy deployed two ships as India rolled out a massive evacuation plan on Tuesday to bring back thousands of its nationals stranded abroad due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown.

Those availing the repatriation flights will be charged, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told a virtual press conference in New Delhi. A passenger on a London-Delhi flight will be charged Rs 50,000 and on a Dhaka-Delhi flight Rs 12,000, he added.

From the Gulf countries to Malaysia and the UK to the US, the multi-agency operation christened 'Vande Bharat Mission' will see the state-owned airline operate the non-scheduled commercial flights till May 13 to ferry around 15,000 Indian nationals from 12 countries.

Bengaluru, Jun 8: Facing a shortage of labour, some top builders in the city have initiated efforts to bring back the migrant workers, who have returned to their native places following the COVID-19 lockdown, and are holding parleys with Railway authorities for operation of special trains to ferry them.

After the lockdown was announced, many construction projects came to a halt and accordingly the labourers were rendered jobless. These migrant workers preferred to go back to their home state as they were not paid when the projects were stopped and were caught in the big financial mess. Many of these migrants even chose to cover thousands of kilometres by foot when even trains, buses or any motor vehicles were not operating.

Keeping their woes in view, the Centre decided to run the Shramik Special trains to ferry them to their native places. But, after they were gone, the builders found themselves in a lurch. An executive of a builder told PTI "Yes, our builder and a few others are in talks with the Railways to run the special train to bring back the labourers." She said nothing has been materialised as of now.

According to her, the builders took the contact numbers of the workers when they left the city to their home states and are now contacting them one by one. The South Western Railway has so far sent 3.11 lakh migrant workers in 216 Shramik Special trains starting from May 3 to June 6.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday hit out at state Health Minister B Sriramulu for stating that "only God can save Karnataka" from COVID-19 and asked him to resign from his post.

Speaking to media here in Bengaluru, Siddaramaiah said, "The government cannot say that we are helpless. Why is the government in power? You have power and you have money. It is your primary duty to serve the citizens of the state."

On being asked about Karnataka Health Minister's statement, the Congress leader said: "Let him resign and go out. God will help you only if you will put all your efforts."

Meanwhile, President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee DK Shivakumar tweeted "Karnataka's Health Minister saying 'Only God can save Karnataka' reflects poorly on @BSYBJP govt's ability to handle the Covid crisis. Why do we need such a government if they cannot tackle the pandemic?"

Sriramulu had said on Wednesday that either people should inculcate awareness or only God can save them from COVID-19.

"Who can save us at this time? It's either God or people should inculcate awareness in them. Congress leaders are involved in political mudslinging at this time. This is not fine and it will not help them in any way," the Minister had said.

"It is a crucial time, in the interest of the general public. I request all the Congress leaders not to indulge in loose talk regarding the issue, it leads to more panic situation among the general public. We are ready to adhere to any punishment if we did any wrong thing," he had added.
