Sriramulu to take on Siddaramaiah in Badami; both file nomination papers amid fanfare

Badami, Apr 24: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday filed nomination from Badami constituency in Bagalkot district. Siddaramaiah was accompanied by Congress leaders S R Patil, C M Ibrahim and ministers R B Thimmapur, Umashree and sitting MLA B B Chimmanakatti while filing the papers.

Siddaramaiah is contesting the upcoming elections from two seats - Badami and Chamundeshwari. On April 20, he had filed his nomination papers from Chamundeshwari constituency. 

Meanwhile Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate B. Sriramulu filed his nomination from Badami against Siddaramaiah. BJP state chief Yeddyurappa, party leaders Jagadish Shettar, Prakash Javadekar and Muralidhar Rao were with Sriramulu at the time of filing the papers.

Workers from both Congress and BJP flooded Badami's streets, marching to drum beats. On one side in this election is Siddaramaiah, who thought Badami to be a safe bet given the huge population of his community, the Kurubas and other Ahinda groups. On the other is Sriramulu, banking on the votes of dalits (to which he belongs) and the Lingayats, the latter being BJP's traditional vote bank.

The BJP has tried to paint Siddaramaiah's choice of Badami as an insurance in the event of a possible loss in his home turf Chamundeshwari. The chief minister has sought to nullify the criticism by asking whether it was the fear of defeat in Vadodara that prompted Narendra Modi to contest from Varanasi too in the 2014 prime ministerial bid. 
He claims he is only responding to the love and affection shown by people in North Karnataka, by opting for one of the segments there. 

When Sriramulu filed his papers, two other BJP ticket aspirants M K Pattanashetti and Mahantesh Mamadapur too submitted their nominations, leaving room for a change of candidate if needed till the last date for withdrawal on April 27.

Yeddyurappa said goddess Banashankari, Badami's presiding deity, too will not bless the chief minister. The elections in the state will held on May 12 and result will be out on May 15.

Mangaluru, Jul 1: The Bajpe police station under the limits of Mangaluru City Police Commissionerate has been sealed down after an arrested accused was tested positive for the Coronavirus.

Police said on Wednesday that the Bajpe police arrested two persons in connection with plotting dacoity in Oddidakala in Bajpe. After the arrest, their throat swab was sent for a test. On Wednesday, one of the accused tested positive for the Coronavirus.

In this connection, the Bajpe police station has been sealed down and the police personnel who were present during the arrest are placed under home quarantine.

New Delhi, July 29: The government of India today announced Unlock 3.0, lifting of night curfew from August 1 and opening of yoga institutes and gymnasiums from August 5 while educational institutes will remain closed throughout August.

According to the Unlock 3.0 guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the lockdown in containment zones will be extended until August 30. The new guidelines will be in effect from August 1.

The operation of Metro rail and international flights will remain suspended. Cinema halls, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars, auditoriums, assembly halls and similar places will remain shut. Large gatherings are also prohibited.

Yoga institutes and gymnasiums will start operating from August 5 for which the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will be issuing Standard Operating Procedures. 

Independence Day celebrations will be held with social distancing norms in place.

Restrictions on the movement of individuals during the night (Night curfew between 10 PM and 5 AM) have been removed.

According to the order, states have been given powers to prohibit certain activities outside containment zones or impose such restrictions as deemed necessary based on their assessment of the situation.

"However, there shall be no restriction on inter-state and intra-state movement of persons and goods. No separate permission/approval/e-permit will be required for such movements," the order said. 

In the previous two Unlock guidelines, the government had substantially opened various activities.

Bengaluru, Apr 20: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday held a meeting with State Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and police officers over the Padarayanapura incident that occurred on Sunday.

A ruckus erupted in Padarayanapura on Sunday allegedly over shifting of suspected COVID-19 persons to quarantine facility by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials.

"I met the Chief Minsiter and briefed him. CM has told us to act strictly. I have told the same to my officials. We won't tolerate such acts by anyone. We have arrested 59 people and five FIRs have been registered. I'm going to Padarayanapura now. Will make sure others are quarantined," said Bommai earlier today after meeting the Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, reacting on the incident, former Karnataka Chief Minister and Janata Dal-Secular leader HD Kumaraswamy said that the people responsible must be dealt with proper action.

"These kinds of incidents are not acceptable, its an act of shame. Doesn't matter which community one belongs to, each and every one must follow the guidelines and law. Whoever is indulged in such act must be punished," he said.
In a series of tweet Kumaraswamy said that it was not at all needed to attack the police check post and this act is unacceptable.

The incident occurred in the late evening on Sunday at Padarayanapura which is recognized as a 'Red Zone' when BBMP officials went to bring 15 secondary contacts of corona positive patients.

However, some people and youth created ruckus and broke the barricades and removed police post which was stalled in the area.
Soon after receiving the information, Bengaluru South Deputy Commissioner of Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
"Lockdown continues, please remain indoors.

Tomorrow will be as it was till today. We Understand your situation and appreciate your cooperation," tweeted Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City, Bhaskar Rao.

In Karnataka, 390 people have been diagnosed with Covid-19, of which 16 people have succumbed to the infection, as per the Union Health Ministry.
