State of the art markets to come up at Kankanady, Kadri, Urwa Store, Alake: U T Khader

Mangaluru, Sept 17: U T Khader, Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge, has said that new state-of-the-art markets would come up in Mangaluru in near future.

Speaking to reporters, he said that the Karnataka government has proposed to have a market at Kadri at a cost of Rs. 12 crore and another at Kankanady at an estimated cost of Rs. 41 crore. A fish market was proposed at Alake at a cost of Rs. 2 crore. A new market will be built at Urwa Store at a cost of Rs. 35 crore.

The construction of the Central Market complex will be taken up under the Smart City Project, he said.

Urwa Market-Complex inauguration soon

The six-storeyed market-cum-commercial complex at the Urwa Market will be ready by the end of October, said Mr Khader.

The new complex will have facilities for selling fish in the cellar, while fruits and vegetables stalls will be on the ground floor. There will be facilities for selling chicken and other shops too.

“The Mangaluru Urban Development Authority has been directed to complete the work by the end of October,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Khader had a review of the construction of the complex taken up at a cost of Rs. 10.5 crore.

MUDA Commissioner K. Srikanth Rao said that the stalls have been designed for 35 women selling raw fish and two women selling dry fish. Mr Khader asked Mr. Rao to consider extension of space for selling fish by making use of adjoining land of Mangaluru City Corporation.

Asking the fisherwomen to make use of the facility being created at the new complex, Mr. Khader said that the government will create additional facility to accommodate more fish sellers.

“Revenue in this coastal region mainly depended on fish. We will design facility to meet the needs of fishermen for the next three decades,” he said.

Bengaluru, Apr 24: The Karnataka Health Department is likely to shift the 119 accused in Padarayanapura violence to Bengaluru's Haj Bhavan from Ramnagar Jail.

This comes after two accused out of 121, who were shifted to Ramnagar jail, tested positive for coronavirus. They have been shifted to Victoria Hospital.

A ruckus erupted in Padarayanapura on Sunday allegedly over the shifting of 15 secondary contacts of corona positive patients to a quarantine facility by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials.

Padarayanapura is recognised as a 'red zone'. When BBMP officials went to shift the suspected COVID-19 patients, some people created a ruckus, broke a barricade and removed the police post in the area.

Mangaluru, May 2:  Dakshina Kannada district administration has taken steps to quarantine people returning after having lost their jobs in foreign countries.

Marriages hall, general halls and hostels are being identified for the purpose, a source said.

Official said that Coronavirus scare also has forced many people from foreign countries, those in including Gulf countries, to return to their native villages.

The Gulf countries are also sending back those staying illegally there. 

Once the flight services resume, thousands of people are likely to return to the country.

Meanwhile, DK deputy commissioner Karnataka held a video conference with Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

Mysuru, Mar 18: Even though the migration season is coming to end and the winged visitors are set to fly back, the water bodies where most birds nest and breed are under close surveillance with the report about spread of bird flu in Mysuru as unusual death of birds can be a cause for worry and hence the authorities are on high alert.

At Karanji Lake, the birds are watched in detail twice – morning and evening. If any sick bird or dead bird is noticed, the Zoo Vets are alerted. So far, no such birds had been sighted. The surveillance data is maintained every day. Intensive surveillance and passive surveillance is done.

Zoo Authority of Karnataka (ZAK) Member Secretary B P Ravi said the birds are doing well and there is no cause for worry with their health monitored constantly along with tests on the bird droppings done every month at the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal.
