United Nations, Aug 9: Legendary carnatic vocalist M S Subbulakshmi will be honoured at the United Nations next week on India's 70th Independence Day by a performance by Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman at the world body's iconic General Assembly.

SubbulakshmiCommemorations to mark Subbulakshmi's birth centenary also include a photo exhibition at the UN headquarters by India's Permanent Mission besides the cultural extravaganza here to coincide with the country's independence day.

"Jai Ho to echo UN? AR Rahman to perform at UN in homage to MS Subbulakshmi on India's 70th Independence Day," India's envoy to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin tweeted.

"Remembering a legend. Photo exhibition @UN in memory of MS Subbulakshmi August 15-19," he said in another tweet.

The Indian mission is gearing up to celebrate India's 70th Independence Day at the UN with the cultural extravaganza featuring Rahman who will become only the second Indian artist after Subbulakshmi to perform at the UN after she was invited for a performance 50 years ago.

The world body's iconic General Assembly hall, from where world leaders address the globe, will reverberate with Rahman's music on the evening of August 15.

Through his performance, Rahman will pay homage to Subbulakshmi, the first musician ever to be awarded India's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna.

The Indian mission is organising the concert - that coincides with the completion of 50 years of Subbulakshmi's performance in the UN General Assembly hall with the support of Chennai-based Sankara Nethralaya, a not-for-profit eye institution.

Subbulakshmi was invited by the then UN Secretary General late U Thant and the then Chef de Cabinet late C V Narasimhan to perform at the world body's headquarters in 1966.

Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar is expected to headline the independence day celebrations being organised at the Indian Consulate in the city.

The Consulate will host a flag-hoisting ceremony on the morning of August 15 and India's Consul General Riva Ganguly Das will ring the closing bell at the NASDAQ stock market in Times Square later that day.

The NASDAQ has been commemorating India's independence day for several years now by inviting the country's ambassadors in the city to ring the closing bell.

Several India Day parades will also be held across the tri-state area.

Actor Abhishek Bachchan and Yoga guru Baba Ramdev will headline the parade in Manhattan, organised on August 21 by the Federation of Indian Associations of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and considered among the largest in the US.

The concert honouring Subbulakshmi at the UN aims to "perpetuate the memory of not only one of the greatest musicians India had ever produced but that of a greatest soul who lived a life of philanthropy and goodwill for all humanity", Sankara Nethralaya's Chairman Emeritus S S Badrinath said in a press release issued here.

Subbulakshmi is among the best musicians India has given to the world, Akbaruddin was quoted as saying in the release.

Sankara Nethralaya will organise a Carnatic music concert by leading Carnatic vocalist and Padma Bhushan awardee Sudha Raghunath and her troupe at the UN on October 2.

It will also organise a musical concert featuring world renowned Indian- origin composer Zubin Mehta, sitar player Anoushka Shankar and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at the famed cultural hotspot Lincoln Center in the city in November.

US-based Sankara Nethralaya Ophthalmic Mission Trust is also planning six concerts by Carnatic composer Sudha Ragunathan in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Chicago and Washington next month.

The trust's president S V Acharya said in the release that it plans on creating a 'Chair for Music' in Subbulakshmi's name in one of the universities in the United States.

Los Angeles, May 24: Hollywood star Salma Hayek says her daughter Valentina Pinault is a talented 12 year old who wants to be a director and star as a lead in a film one day.

The Oscar-nominated actor shares Valentina with husband, French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault.

Hayek said she has confidence in her daughter's abilities and believes she has a long way to go.

"She has so many talents. She draws, she wants to shoot movies - both as a director and as the lead - and she writes great pieces. Sometimes when I read her work, I have an urge to produce these stories.

"But she tells me that she will do it by herself when she's older. I don't know what's coming next for her but it seems that she has a lot of ways to go," the actor told HELLO! magazine.

Hayek, 53, added she is concerned about Valentina who has always lived a sheltered life.

"Valentina has always done what she wanted, I've never made her do anything and this means she hasn't yet learned how to oppose pressure, how to overcome obstacles.

"I know by experience that only the overcoming of some difficulties can lead you in the right direction," she said.

Kochi, Jan 6: A trial court on Monday framed charges against Malayalam film actor Dileep and other accused in the case of alleged abduction and molestation of a south Indian actress in 2017.

The actor and nine other accused were present in the additional special sessions court in Ernakulamwhen the charges were framed against them.

All of them have denied the charges.

On Saturday, the Court had dismissed a plea filed by Dileep, seeking to exclude him from the list of accused.

The Court had admitted the prosecution argument that there is prima facie evidence against him in the crime and dismissed the plea of the actor, who is eighth accused in the case.

The court had also not allowed a plea by the actor to grant him 10 days time to file the appeal in a higher court in the light of the Supreme Court order in November 2019 that the trial should be completed in six months.

The court is hearing the case in-camera.

On December 19, Dileep, along with his lawyers and a technical expert, had examined the contents of the electronic records at the closed room of the court.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had directed that the actor be allowed to inspect the records to enable him to present an effective defence during the trial.

In February 2017, the actress was allegedly abducted and molested by the accused.

Seven people, including the key accused 'Pulsar' Suni were arrested in connection with the actress' abduction case.

There are 10 accused in the case.

The entire act had allegedly taken place in a moving vehicle, which was filmed by the accused to blackmail her.

Dileep was subsequently arrested and arrayed as an accused in connection with offences under provisions of the Indian Penal Code and IT Act.

The top court had directed that the trial in case be concluded expeditiously, preferably within six months from the date of the judgement.

A woman judge is hearing the case.

In February 2019, the High Court, while considering a plea seeking to transfer the case to a Sessions Court headed by a woman judge to conduct the trial, had ordered the CBI special court Judge-III Ernakulam Honey M Varghese to complete the trial expeditiously.

London, Jul 4: Hollywood star Chris Hemsworth says he is really excited about the biopic on WWE legend Hulk Hogan, which is currently in development.

"The Thor" actor revealed that he will bulk up his physique for the much-anticipated film to be directed by “Joker” helmer Todd Phillips.

“This movie is going to be a really fun project. As you can imagine, the preparation for the role will be insanely physical. I will have to put on more size than I ever have before, even more than I put on for Thor.

''And then there is the accent as well as the physicality and the attitude. I will also have to do a deep dive into the rabbit hole of the wrestling world, which I'm really looking forward to doing,” Hemsworth told British magazine Total Film.

The project was announced last year, with “8 Mile” scribe Scott Silver and John Pollono attached to pen the script.

It is expected to look into Hogan's rise from the Florida wrestling circuit to becoming the face of the World Wrestling Federation in the 1980s where he squared off with villain Andre the Giant.

The 36-year-old actor, however, said that the team is still “quite a way away” from starting production on the film.

“'I haven't even seen a script yet. The project is deep in development. Todd Phillips and I met to chat about it maybe a year or two ago. We talked about the idea for the film, which I think was going to be a TV series at one point.

''There were a few different ideas about what portion of his life it was going to be set in, so we spitballed about what it could be and what I thought it might be. Thankfully, they ran with a few of those ideas and the script is in the process of being written - but Hulk Hogan is still quite a way away.''

The biopic will be produced by Michael Sugar through his Sugar23's first-look Netflix deal along with Joint Efforts' Phillips and Bradley Cooper, Eric Bischoff, and Hemsworth.

Hogan will also serve as executive producer along with Sugar23's Ashley Zalta. Steve Desmond and Michael Sherman will serve as co-producers.
