Mangaluru, Jul 22: Sources privy to the Special Investigation Team probing into the murder of journalist-cum-activist Gauri Lankesh has said that Mohan Nayak, who was arrested as seventh accused earlier this week from his village of Sampaje, near Sullia in Dakshina Kannada district, had provided shelter to the killers.

50-year-old Nayak, a Naati Vaidya (a non-qualified doctor of sorts), ran an acupuncture clinic at Kumbalagodu in Bengaluru. He was arrested on Wednesday night, and produced before a city court which remanded him in judicial custody for six days.

The acupuncture clinic was run out of a rented room, which Mohan later vacated for the other accused in the case to stay in the run-up to Gauri’s killing, and returned to his village, the sources said.

Mohan is suspected to have handed over the 7.65mm gun to Parashuram Waghmore, resident of Sindagi, hours before the latter fired from it at Gauri in front of her residence in Rajarajeshwari Nagar on September 5, 2017.

SIT sources said Mohan was very close to Amol Kale, the Pune resident who is suspected to be one of the main conspirators in the killing. Mohan had lent his mobile phone to Kale.

Sleuths were led to Mohan by an entry in Kale’s diary, found in his Pune house. K T Naveen Kumar, the Maddur gunrunner who was the first to be arrested in the Gauri case, told his interrogators that Kale and Mohan held frequent closed door meetings. Mohan was in constant touch with Kale and other accused after Gauri’s killing too. He even met Kale once in Belagavi.

According to SIT sources, Mohan participated in several Hindutva meetings in Goa and Maharashtra. Quoting Sampaje residents, the sources said Mohan carried huge bags during his journeys to Belagavi and Goa. They said SIT sleuths will be taking Mohan to Sampaje, Kushalnagar and Belagavi soon.

Bengaluru, Apr 14: The Karnataka government has decided to adopt “remote monitoring” of COVID-19 positive patients in order to ensure the safety of healthcare professionals - the frontline warriors against the pandemic.

Two doctors treating COVID-19 patients tested positive recently and in to check such instances in future, the Department of Medical Education is planning remote monitoring, which reduces doctors’ exposure to patients.

Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar has consulted some of the doctors in the United States who are already using this technology to treat the COVID-19 positive cases. The minister is also having a meeting with representatives of some of the companies which provide such technology.

“I spoke to a team of epidemiologists and heads of certain departments at the United States to know about the remote monitoring technology they are using. I am also meeting the representatives of a few such companies which can provide us with the technology at our hospitals,”  Dr Sudhakar said.

The minister added, “We have heard reports of many doctors and other health professionals succumbing to COVID-19. We don’t want to take risk.” Explaining the technology, Dr Sachidanand, Vice Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences said that remote monitoring uses a software with which specialist doctors can monitor health condition of patients and treat them by not getting exposed directly.

The presence of all the doctors in COVID-19 is not necessary when patients are monitored remotely.

Wuhan, Feb 6: Chinese multinational conglomerate holding company Tencent has allegedly published "real" data on the novel coronavirus deaths, with briefly listing death toll as 24,589 -- way too higher than over 500 deaths China has officially announced to date.

According to Taiwan News, "Tencent... seems to have inadvertently released what is potentially the actual number of infections and deaths, which were astronomically higher than official figures".

Tencent, on its webpage titled "Epidemic Situation Tracker," showed confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in China as standing at 154,023 - over 10 times the official figure given to the world on February 1.

Data leaked: Tencent lists 25,000 deaths in China, 1.54 lakh infections from coronavirus
It listed the number of suspected cases as 79,808, four times the official figure.

"The number of cured cases was only 269, well below the official number that day of 300. Most ominously, the death toll listed was 24,589, vastly higher than the 300 officially listed that day".

Once people noticed this, Tencent immediately updated the numbers to reflect the government's "official" numbers.

"Netizens noticed that Tencent has on at least three occasions posted extremely high numbers, only to quickly lower them to government-approved statistics," said the report.

Some people speculated a coding problem may be behind the real "internal" data but others believe that someone is actually trying to reveal the real numbers.

Tencent was yet to officially comment on these reports.

"According to multiple sources in Wuhan, many coronavirus patients are unable to receive treatment and die outside of hospitals."

There have been multiple reports of Wuhan officials cremating deceased coronavirus victims before they could be added to the official death toll.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the coronavirus numbers coming out of China are "fishy".

If the numbers from the alleged Tencent leak are accurate, it would put coronavirus' mortality rate at almost 16 per cent. By comparison, SARS' mortality rate was 9.6 per cent, reports CCN.

Caijing, an independent magazine based in Beijing that covers societal, political, and economic issues, has also claimed that the Communist Party of China (CCP) is underreporting the extent of the coronavirus outbreak.

Caijing's article on Coronavirus that detailed how Wuhan officials are not reporting real figures was censored in China.

As of Thursday, the official death toll in China rose to 563, with 28,018 confirmed cases.
