Chennai, Dec 12: Superstar Rajinikanth turned 67 on Tuesday, with his fans leading the birthday celebrations.

The actor was, however, not in town, according to his publicist.

Enthusiastic Rajini fans celebrated their icon's birthday by conducting prayers, even as many of them thronged the city with a hope of catching a glimpse of the actor, currently busy with "Kala-Karikalan", touted as a sequel to his 2016 hit "Kabali".

Actor Dhanush, also the son-in-law of Rajinikanth, announced the launch of the film's second look coinciding with the veteran star's birthday on Tuesday.

The picture shows Rajinikanth wearing dark glasses and a black shirt.

The film, being produced by Dhanush, has already set off a buzz among his fans.

Political and cinema world greeted the actor on his birthday.

In his twitter message, Actor Amitabh Bachchan termed Rajinkanth a "friend" and a "large-hearted colossus".

"To my dear friend, colleague and a most humble and large hearted Colossus !! Birthday greetings," he tweeted.

He also uploaded a picture of himself with Rajinikanth.

Actor Akshay Kumar, his co-star in "2.0", also greeted Rajinikanth on his birthday.

"Have always been in awe of your onscreen persona but working with you made me a bigger fan of you offscreen. They don't call you Superstar just like that. Keep shining the brightest@superstarrajini Sir," Akshay tweeted.

DMK leader MK Stalin, MDMK founder Vaiko and BJP state unit President Tamilisai Sounderrajan, actors Radhika, Kajal Aggarwal and Vikram Prabhu were among those who wished the superstar.

"#HBDSuperStarRajinikanth I, very sincerely, wish you a long, contented, happy and healthy life. @superstarrajini," tweeted Stalin.

Vaiko spoke to Rajinikanth over the phone and extended his birthday greetings, wishing him a long life and good health.

In a Tamil tweet, Soundararajan greeted "brother" Rajinikanth on behalf of the BJP state unit.

The political circle in Tamil Nadu is abuzz with speculation of the actor taking the political plunge, especially after his statement earlier this year asking his fans to "prepare for war". It was seen as his hint of a political entry.

At a fans' meeting in May this year, he said, "When war comes they (professionals) will come to the rescue of their motherland.. I have a profession, work, duty and so do you. Go to your places, do your duty, take care of your vocation.. Let us face the war when it comes."

He had also complained that the "system is rotten" in the presence of leaders like Stalin and PMK's Anbumani Ramadoss.

The actor has not made any loaded statements after that but his contemporary Kamal Haasan has gone ballistic against the ruling AIADMK on corruption, hinting he might make a political plunge.

In 1996, Rajinikanth had publicly criticised the then AIADMK government led by the late J Jayalalithaa on the law and order front, and had backed the then DMK-TMC combine, which swept the polls, routing AIADMK.

The 77-year-old actor was admitted to Nanavati hospital along with son Abhishek after testing positive for Covid-19 on July 11. Abhishek, 44, is still positive and will remain under medical care.

"It has been heartening to be back from the Hospital after the ‘mukti’ from the coronavirus but a sour taste in the mouth when Abhishek has to still be in the medical care," Amitabh wrote in his blog.

"Assuring us each minute that ‘all shall be well’ , when in fact they themselves struggle to find that confirmed patent that can be used, delivered, executed to save lives and conditions from the virus.

"When I had addressed them as 'angels in white' I had never imagined that I would be supine in their midst to savour their angelic presence, as they give us hope, inspiration and the strength to fight. They are quite quite remarkable. My gratitude shall never fail for them... feeling bad for Abhishek .. prayers he comes home soon," he added.

On Sunday, Abhishek thanked well-wishers for their continued support and said he would remain under medical care.

"I, unfortunately, due to some comorbidities remain Covid-19 positive and remain in hospital. Again, thank you all for your continued wishes and prayers for my family. Very humbled and indebted. I'll beat this and come back healthier! Promise," he wrote.

Mumbai, Aug 2: Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron has come aboard as an executive producer on filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane's movie The Disciple. The Marathi feature is set to represent India at the 77th edition of the Venice Film Festival. It will be screened in the Competition section of the prestigious film gala.

The movie, which is Tamhane's follow-up to his National Award-winning feature Court, has also been selected for 2020 Toronto International Film Festival's official line-up.

"I met Chaitanya through a mentorship program where I had the opportunity to watch his very superb debut film, Court  I was immediately impressed by his sense of cinema and fearless confidence to tell stories.

"He was part of most of Roma's process and I jumped to the opportunity to be part of the process of his second film The Disciple. I believe Chaitanya is one of the most important new voices of contemporary cinema," Cuaron said in a statement.

Tamhane said he is honoured to have Cuaron aboard the film.

"It’s a bit surreal and an incredible honour for me to have one of the most recognised and acclaimed filmmakers in the world be part of 'The Disciple'. In some ways, this validation from Alfonso Cuaron is even more," he added.

The Disciple, a 127-minute long feature, stars Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, and Kiran Yadnyopavit. It has been produced by “Sir” actor Vivek Gomber through his Zoo Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

The Disciple marks Tamhane’s return to Venice after he won the Best Film - Orizzonti and Lion of the Future award for Court in 2014.

Court, a poignant commentary on India's judicial system, also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 2015 and was India's official entry for the Best Foreign Film at the 2016 Oscars.

Endeavor Content will sell North American rights and New Europe Film Sales boards the film as an international sales agent.

Kochi, Jun 27: The Kerala government on Friday submitted an application in a local court requesting to stop the prosecution of ivory possession case against Malayalam film actor Mohanlal.

In the application for withdrawal of prosecution, the government has requested the court to stop the prosecution "immediately for the interest of justice".

''The legality of the possession of two elephant tusks by Mohanlal was accepted by the competent authority under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 by issuing him a certificate of ownership. The possession and custody of the elephant tusks thus become legal after the Chief Wildlife Warden (CWW) issued him the certificate," the state government said.

"Further conduct of the criminal trial may go against the good faith amongst the parties as far as the certificate of ownership issued to Mohanlal is concerned. One cannot go back from that ownership certificate and it was stopped from contradicting, deny or declare to be false the previous statement made by the actor in the court," it added.

"The government should not be allowed to revert from its promises in order to keep the faith of the people and in the interest of good governance," the government further said.

The case was registered by the forest department in 2012. The state government submitted the application in Kuruppampady Judicial Magistrate Court, which will hear the matter on July 24.
