Sushma asks jobless in Saudi to return, not to wait for dues

New Delhi, Aug 23: The government on Monday asked stranded Indian workers in Saudi Arabia to return without waiting for unpaid salaries from their Saudi employers, indicating that negotiations to secure their dues had not made headway.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj used the social media to reach out to the affected Indian nationals asking them to return without “waiting indefinitely” for their dues.

“When [the] Saudi government settles with the companies which have been closed down, your dues will also be paid,” Ms. Swaraj said in a tweet.

The Minister-level declaration is the first sign that quiet diplomacy led by MoS Gen. (Retd.) V.K. Singh, to ensure dues and salaries for at least 3,172 workers who became jobless after three major Saudi construction firms folded up, did not yield results.

“Indian workers in Saudi Arabia – please file your claims and return home. We will bring you back free of charge. Please appreciate that settlement of claims will take time. There is no point in waiting there indefinitely,” Ms. Swaraj announced on her Twitter account. The announcement came even as Mr. Singh was in Saudi Arabia to seek settlement for the unpaid dues for the nationals.

The issue erupted on July 30 when External Affairs Minister announced from her Twitter handle that 10,000 Indian nationals were facing a “food crisis” in Saudi Arabia as they had not been paid salaries for several months. The crisis was due to non-payment of salaries for Indian nationals.

Subsequently, government sources had told The Hindu that the workers were to be evacuated even as the Consulate General in Jeddah and the Indian Embassy in Riyadh delivered food packets to feed hundreds of Indians.

A few days later, the government revised its estimate to declare that 3,172 workers were facing “distress” whereas 10,000 nationals “required assistance.”

However workers could not be evacuated quickly as most of them did not possess “no-objection certificates” from employing firms that had folded up and that apart they were also reluctant to leave without the “unpaid salaries.”

Following the Indian initiative, the Saudi government pitched in with food, medical and transport support for the jobless workers and promised to give “exit visas” to those without no-objection certificates.

However, MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup had confirmed on August 19 that dues-related difficulties continued for Indian workers who were employed with Saudi Oger, Saudi Bin Laden and the Saad Group.

'No third option'

“The important thing to remember is, no third option is available to Indian workers belonging to these three companies,” Mr. Swarup said, asking the workers to opt either for repatriation or relocation to other companies.

Since the beginning of the crisis, two groups of workers were repatriated from Saudi Arabia amid signs that most of the workers were staying back seeking unpaid dues.

However, Ms. Swaraj's announcement on Monday indicates that the government would prefer the “jobless” workers to return after registering the claims — without any further assurances — with the Saudi authorities, as the companies that have ended operations are not in a position to pay the dues immediately.

Bengaluru, Jan 16: Amping up the online payment experience for consumers, Razorpay, the leading full-stack financial services company, today launched a new product, Instant Refunds for businesses.

This new feature activates refunds and credits the customer's source account across payment methods such as credit card, net banking, and UPI within a minute of initiation.

India is one of the fastest-growing online retail markets today. About 71 per cent of internet users in the country purchase products online. Today, the refund process has two major pain points for both the end customer and the business.

First, a delay of five-seven business days for the customer in receiving the money because of multiple intermediaries like the acquiring bank, issuing bank and the networks (VISA/MasterCard/Rupay).

Second, the lack of transparency during the entire refund process for both the customer and the business. This long cycle of processing refunds is a significant problem with every popular payment method in the industry.

This new feature will also reduce the dependence on manpower as every refund issue on an average leads to ten service emails or calls from customer support teams.

The company also recently launched its corporate credit cards for its partner businesses, RazorpayX current accounts, support for freelancers and homepreneurs, and acquired Opfin, a payroll and HR management software company.

Currently powering payments for over 800,000 businesses including the likes of Indigo, BSE, Thomas Cook, Reliance, SpiceJet, Aditya Birla, Sony, and Oyo, the team plans to increase this count to 1,400,000 by this year. The full-stack financial solutions company expects a 4x growth in its revenue by the end of the next fiscal year.

Mangaluru, Mar 14: About 80 centres to check people for fever, cold, cough and other symptoms related to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) have been set up in the city, health officials said here on Saturday.

According to sources in district health department, apart from the testing centres at Wenlock District Hospital and Lady Goshen hospital, six centres in community health centres, 66 in primary health centres (PHC) and four in the taluk hospitals have been opened for people to get themselves checked if they show any COVID-19-related symptoms.

Two other testing centres are already working at the city’s airport and seaport.

Kuwait: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all sections of the community in Kuwait, hundreds of NRIs are stranded due to unavailability of flights to fly back home. Leaders of associations belonging to Karnataka state in Kuwait and other part of Gulf countries have initiated a collective effort to discuss the challenges and issues faced by Kannadigas in Gulf Countries during COVID-19 pandemic.    

Mr. Ramesh S Bhandary – President of Tulu Koota Kuwait and Mr. Rajesh Vittal KKK president along with Other Gulf Karnataka Association leaders held video conference meeting arranged by GULF NRI Forum with Hon. Chief Minister of Karnataka Sri B.S. Yediyurappa to discuss the issue of COVID19 in Kuwait.

During this video conference, association leaders briefly explained various issues, statistics of emergency cases which include pregnant women, Senior citizens, visit visa expired cases and urgent medical treatment requirement cases who wish to travel back to Karnataka.

Evacuation flights to Bengaluru and Mangalore from Kuwait and other Gulf countries, request for free airline tickets or free quarantine facility at Bengaluru and Mangaluru also requested during this video call.

Responding to leaders requests, B.S Yediyurappa promised to address GCC Kannadigas concerns during this humanitarian crisis.

On Behalf of Kannadigaru Dubai & KNRI Forum , Gulf Kannadigas & Gulf Karantaka associations leaders expressed the happiness with BS Yadiyurappa - Hon Chief Minister of Karnataka, Raghavendra Yadiyurappa - Member of Parliament - Shivamogga constituency, for hearing problems of NRI and giving assurance of immediate action plan to repatriate needy Kannadigas from Gulf region to Karnataka.
