Bengaluru, Jan 23: Bushra Tabassum, whose techie husband Mohammed Afzal was among those arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) during nationwide raids in the early hours of Friday, said the raiding team held a gun to her innocent husband's head and also forced her to sign on a blank sheet of paper.

It was 3 am when Bushra heard a loud knock at the apartment she lives in with her husband. The men who entered, she said, proclaimed they were from the Delhi Police, but offered no proof of identity. Bushra said that the men pointed a gun at her before taking Afzal away, handcuffed, for alleged links to ISIS.

"They showed me no identity, no papers at all, no search warrant, no arrest warrant. On what basis they are taking my husband? Nothing was disclosed to us," she said, describing her husband as "very, very innocent," said Bushra, who works from home as an HR consultant.

"I really don't know," she said when asked about when she expects to see her husband. Their four-year-old daughter kept near her as hijab-clad and teary-eyed Bushra spoke media persons.

“They knocked on the door and my husband opened it. As soon as they entered my house, they handcuffed him and asked me to sit in the room quietly. They pounced on him how dogs pounce on a person. The policemen then put a gun to my husband head, manhandled him and told him to show where the weapons were hidden. Then they ransacked the entire house, but could not find any weapon. My husband is a software engineer and a law abiding citizen. He has never been involved in any anti-social activity in his entire life,’’ she said.

Describing it as a very frightening experience especially for her three-year-old child, Bushra said the police seized her phone and laptop for no reason. “They have taken away the car and the bike which belongs to my husband. I am afraid that they will plant evidence against my husband and frame him,’’ Bushra said.

She added that they asked her to sign on a blank paper after they did not find any evidence of weapons. “I refused and told them to give me a written statement saying that they searched my house. The policemen later made me sign a letter which stated that they did not destroy my property. The paper was suspiciously blank and they purposely made me sign it. My husband is known to the Madrassa teacher, Syed Anzar Shah Khasmi and it appear that on the basis of that connection he has been framed in this case,’’ she said.

35-year-old Afzal is a project manager at IHS, a multi-national company in Whitefield. He was living with his wife and daughter in Saraipalya near Hegde Nagar off Nagawara junction in Bengaluru North. A diploma-holder, Afzal had worked with a couple of small companies. He took up a job in Saudi Arabia around eight years ago but returned after a few months when his father fell ill. He married Bushra in 2009.

The Karnataka BJP, which faced action on Twitter earlier this month over incendiary tweets, this time has passed the blame of Sangh Parivar sponsored Delhi violence to the victims.

In an insensitive tweet on Friday, it dubbed the protests against the notorious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as "fake" and added that the violence that followed was "the most well-planned assault on the Idea of India," in an apparent attempt to portray the victims as villains.

The handle, notorious for tweets targeting Muslims, blamed the clashes that erupted in Delhi between people demonstrating for and against the CAA on "so called 'Peacefuls'" - a known right-wing slur for Muslims.

Many people on social media called out the tweet for misleading people and covering up the role of Delhi BJP leader Kapil Mishra's provocative speech for triggering the violence or the failure of the Delhi Police, which reports to the former BJP chief and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in controlling the riots.

Earlier this month, the Karnataka BJP had tweeted a video of Muslim women standing in queue to vote in the Delhi elections, showing their voter ID cards, with the snarky caption: "Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during NPR (National Population Register) exercise."

Soon after, the party unit's Twitter handle was blocked by the social media platform for 24 hours after many accused it of encouraging Islamophobia.

NPR has been widely criticised by opposition parties as a precursor to the government's planned NRC or National Register of Citizens which intends to make Indians prove their citizenship with documents that many poor or illiterate do not possess.

Many fear that combined with the already imposed CAA - which promises citizenship to only non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh - the NRC can be used to make millions of Muslims stateless.

The government has denied the allegation and said the CAA only intends to help those who have faced religious persecution. In recent weeks, it has gone back on its rhetoric on the NRC which was announced by Amit Shah in parliament as "it will certainly happen".

The CAA, which was cleared by parliament in December, has triggered deadly protests in the country which left at least 25 dead till Sunday. Since then, at least 42 more people have been killed as large-scale violence erupted in northeast Delhi and hundreds of homes and shops have been burned to the ground.

Bengaluru, Jan 24: Middle East based prestigious LuLu Group has come forward to invest $300 million in Karnataka in the retail, logistics and hospitality sectors.

As part of this, the first LuLu mall will commence operations in Bengaluru’s Rajajinagar area by August.

LuLu’s first mall in India, in Cochin, is seen as a huge success. It’s not clear how that mall is doing financially, but it became so popular that it had an adverse effect on almost every other mall in the city.

Lulu’s investment plan for Karnataka was communicated during a discussion between chief minister BS Yediyurappa and Yusuff Ali MA, chairman and managing director of Lulu Group, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The company will also set up two five-star hotels in Bengaluru through Twenty14 Holdings, its hospitality arm, and a modern logistics centre in the Uttara Kannada region.

Lulu Group’s retail initiative Tablez brought Toys `R’ Us, one of the world’s largest toy store chains, to Bengaluru in 2017. Started in the Phoenix Mall in Whitefield, it competes with Reliance-owned Hamleys.

Tablez has also brought in other international brands such as American ice cream parlour chain Cold Stone Creamery, South Africa based flame-grilled chicken concept Galito’s, and Tablez’ own brand Bloomsbury’s, a boutique cafe and bakery. It has also launched Spanish fashion brands Springfield and Women ’secret.
