UAE at forefront of women empowerment

New Delhi, Aug 28: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has adopted a powerful stance in empowering women, setting new standards based on a model drawn from the vision of founding father of the Arab country, late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

This approach perpetuates in the current leadership's vision for the future, whereby women stand as active partners and contributors in the country's development process.

The UAE Constitution guarantees equal rights for women and it is leading the way in a number of regional and global indexes on gender equality and women's achievements, education and literacy, women's employment.

The country's Constitution supports the participation of Emirati women in decision-making, a core component of economic empowerment. In December 2014, the UAE Cabinet adopted a decision imposing the appointment of women on the boards of directors of all institutions and government agencies, setting the proportion of female representation at 15 per cent in government institutions.

In 2015, the UAE Gender Balance Council was established as a federal agency to scale up the UAE's efforts to achieve gender balance across all sectors nationwide. In UAE, women are actively involved in the police, military and judiciary sectors.

With more than 70 per cent of girls graduating from universities, the UAE has also made remarkable progress in reducing gender disparities in girls' education in schools and higher education
The Arab country has also adopted several national policies and strategies aimed at empowering women in the UAE and strengthening their status in all sectors, by launching a National Strategy for Women's Empowerment and Entrepreneurship 2015- 2021, which aims to empower and build the capacity of Emirati women to overcome the difficulties encountered in their participation in all areas.

May 10: Azaan is an integral part of the faith, not the gadget, says veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar, asking that the Islamic call to prayer on loudspeakers should be stopped as it causes "discomfort" to others.

In a tweet on Saturday, Akhtar wondered why the practice was 'halaal' (allowed) when it was, for nearly half a century in the country, considered 'haraam' or forbidden.

"In India for almost 50 years Azaan on the loud speak was Haraam. Then it became Halaal and so halaal that there is no end to it, but there should be an end to it. Azaan is fine but loud speaker does cause of discomfort for others. I hope that atleast this time they will do it themselves (sic)," Akhtar tweeted.

When a user asked his opinion on loudspeakers being used in temples, the 75-year-old writer said everyday use of speakers is a cause of concern.

"Whether it's a temple or a mosque, if you're using loudspeakers during a festival, it's fine. But it shouldn't be used everyday in either temples or mosques.

"For more than thousand years Azaan was given without the loud speaker. Azaan is the integral part of your faith, not this gadget," he replied.

Earlier in March, Akhtar had supported the demand to shut mosques amid the coronavirus outbreak in the country, saying even Kaaba and Medina have been closed due to the pandemic.

He had also appealed to the Muslim community to offer prayers from home in the holy month of Ramzan, which began on April 24.

"I request all the Muslim brothers that now that Ramzan is coming, please say your prayers but make sure that this doesn't cause problems to anyone else. The prayers that you do in the mosque, you can do that at home. According to you, the house, the ground, this all has been made by Him. Then you can do your prayers anywhere," he had said.

Bengaluru, April 3: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday held a meeting with Muslim leaders and legislators, seeking their cooperation in containing COVID-19.

In a press statement, the Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said that the Muslim leaders have agreed to give details of persons who visited Tablighi Markaz in Nijamuddin and has also assured that they will convince the attendees to undergo tests for coronavirus and also follow quarantine rules.

CM Yediyurappa also informed media that the Muslim leaders are also advising the members of their community to offer prayers at home and also to stay indoors to maintain social distancing during "azan".

Also, an appeal has been made to the Muslim community to cooperate with the health workers during the treatment.

The Karnataka Chief Minister also appealed the masses not to pay heed to any sort of rumours pertaning to COVID-19. "Let all of us strictly follow precautionary measures and win the battle over caronavirus."

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Janata Dal (Secular) leader and MLA Satyanarayana passed away today due to multiple organ failure. He was 67.

Satyanarayana was representing Tumakuru’s Sira constituency in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He is survived by five daughters and one son.

It is learnt that he was suffering from multiple organ ailments from the past few days and was recently admitted to Manipal Hospital in the city. He breathed his last at 12:20 p.m.

He contested from JDS and worked three times as MLA and 2 times as MP. He was the chairman of KSRTC during the coalition government led by HD Kumaraswamy.

Former Prime Minister HD Devegowda mourned his death and said, “It is a shock to hear the demise of former minister and my close friend. We are friends from the past 3 decades and I cannot recall the days without him.”

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar said, “Satyanarayana was concerned for the farmers and he was a gentleman. Hearing the news hurts me and this is an irreparable loss to the political field.”
