Udupi, Aug 17: Members of the district unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on Thursday demanding a ban on Popular Front of India (PFI) and Karnataka Forum for Dignity (KFD).

Addressing the protesters, Mattar Ratnakar Hegde, president of the district unit of the BJP, said that the attacks on the workers of the BJP and Sangh Parivar had increased in the State. The PFI and KFD were the two organisations that were responsible for these attacks.

These organisations had connections with SIMI, a banned organisation. In fact, the office-bearers of SIMI were now the office-bearers of PFI and KFD. These organisations were involved in several incidents of violence against Hindus and had their network in other States such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Goa.

Recent investigation by the police in the murder of the RSS worker Sharath Madiwala had revealed that the PFI was behind it. Sharath Madiwala was hacked to death by a gang on July 4 at B.C. Road in Mangaluru. The police had arrested a person, Khalilullah, and charged him with the murder of Madiwala.

Khalilullah was the president of the Chamarajanagar unit of the PFI. It was not just Mangaluru, these organisations were also involved in violent incidents against activists of Sangh Parivar in Mysuru, Bengaluru and Moodbidri. Hence, it was essential that the government banned both the PFI and KFD in the State. The government should freeze the bank accounts of both these organisations and confiscate all their immovable assets immediately. All cases of assault on Sangh Parivar activists and also their murder should be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a thorough probe.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah should dismiss Minister for Environment and Forests, B. Ramanath Rai, for supporting these anti-social organisations and for provoking communal violence, Mr. Hegde said.

Mangaluru, Jan 18: Congress leader Siddaramaiah targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah soon after he arrived in Bengaluru on Saturday, demanding his answers on various questions pertaining to the state.

In a slew of tweets under the #AnswerMadiShah banner, Siddaramaiah raised issues ranging from the August 2019 floods to the recent police shootout in Mangaluru that killed two people during an anti-CAA protest.

On December 19, Jaleel (45) and Nausheen (24) were killed after the police opened fire during a protest against the CAA.

“Two innocent victims were killed in Mangaluru in what public opinion says that it is a fake encounter. You are the Home Minister of the country. Don't you think adequate investigation has to take place when people cry foul about the incident?” Siddaramaiah asked.

He further asked: “Mr Amit Shah, before investing time to brainwash people to accept your divisive policies, why don't you visit flood-affected areas again and assess if the Central government funds  are sufficient or not?”

The Congress leader pointed out that Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had claimed that Karnataka suffered losses of over Rs 35,000 crore due to the floods. “But your aid is just Rs 1,870 crore. When are you planning to give the remaining? Will there be any funds left after the implementation of CAA, NPR & NRC?” he added.

The former chief minister brought up the Mahadayi river water sharing dispute. It may be recalled that Shah, in the run-up to the Karnataka Assembly elections in 2018, had promised a resolution to the dispute within six months if BJP was voted to power in the state.

“Mr. Amit Shah, your colleagues give contradictory statements on the initiation of Mahadayi project. Why is there a change in stance after elections? What is your stand on the issue,” Siddaramaiah asked.

Bengaluru, Jun 18: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominated Prathap Simha Nayak, M.T.B. Nagaraj, R. Shankar and Sunil Valyapure to contest in the June 29 biennial elections for 4 of the 7 Karnataka legislative Council seats, an official said.

"Our high command selected 3 of the 4 candidates the state core committee recommended on Tuesday, excluding H.R. Vishwanath, a former Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) rebel, who lost in the December 5 Assembly by-elections from Hunsur in Mysuru district on a BJP ticket," a party official said.

Nagaraj, a former Congress rebel, who also lost in the Assembly by-election from Hoskote in Bengaluru Rural district on a BJP ticket, was the state housing minister in the 14-month-old JD-S-Congress coalition government, which fell on July 23, 2019 after 17 of their rebels resigned then.

Shankar, who was an Independent and a minister in the former coalition government, was not given the BJP ticket to contest in the December Assembly bypolls though he too resigned from the Ranebennur assembly seat in Haveri district, about 340km northwest of Bengaluru, along with former Congress and JD-S rebels.

Valyapure is the party's grass-root leader from Chincholi in Gulbarga district in the state's northern region, about 586km from Bengaluru.

Valyapure extensively campaigned in the May 2019 general elections and ensured the victory of BJP candidate Umesh Yadav from the reserved Gulbarga Lok Sabha seat, defeating Congress senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge.

Nayak is also the party's grassroot cadre who rose from the ranks to become its Dakshina Kannada district president in the state's coastal region.

As the ruling party has 116 legislators in the 225-member Assembly, all its 4 candidates will need 28 votes each to win the contest.

Of the 7 outgoing Council members, 5 are from the Congress and one each from the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and an Independent.

With 68 lawmakers, the Congress will be able to retain 2 seats and the JD-S one as it has only 34 legislators in the lower house.

The Congress has nominated its outgoing Rajya Sabha member B.K. Hariprasad and outgoing Council member Naseer Ahmed to contest for 2 Council seats.

Of the 75-member Council, the opposition Congress has 37, BJP 19, JD-S 16, two Independents and one Chairman.
