Udupi: Parking fee in front of business outfits sparks debate at CMC

Udupi, February 28: Udupi CMC President Kiran Kumar, at the monthly meeting held here on Monday, refused to withdraw the parking fees being levied on the vehicles parked in front of the shops and business outfits.

Raising the issue Congress Councillor Jayananda alleged that the fees levied on the parked vehicles (Rs 5 for four wheelers and Rs 2 for two wheelers) were too heavy and the municipality did not provide any facility for the same.

In his reply Kiran Kumar took Jayananda to task for failing to attend the meeting convened by the Deputy Commissioner to discuss the same. “The decision has been approved by both DC and the RTO. Moreover, it brings income to the Municipality”, he said adding, “if a person is fined for parking in front of a shop, shop owner is morally responsible. Because, it is his responsibility to provide for parking facility to his customers.”

BJP Councillor MR Pai alleged the press and the media for pointing at the Municipality, for the release of waste water by the Srikrishna Temple to the open drain. “Media blames the Udupi CMC for the leakage of filthy water from the Nittur waste water recycling plant, to the Kalmadi river and for the non functioning of street lights on the Udupi-Kalsanka- Kadiyali road. Another BJP councilor Shyamprasad Kudwa supported him.

Kiran Kumar said that the ongoing works of National Highway widening had caused the leakage of filthy water in to the Kalmadi river. Setting right the thing would require Rs 7 crores. A CMC delegation had met the Minister for Highways Jithin Prasad during his recent visit to Udupi and demanded the grant for the same.


At this juncture Jayananda alleged that the leakage had been there since 2-3 years.

Kiran Kumar also assured former President Dinkar Shetty, who raised the issue of release of filthy water in to the open drain by the Srikrishna Temple, of stern action and instructed the officials to serve a notice immediately.


At the meeting President Kiran Kumar threatened the contractors who have bagged the tender for the sanctioned works and did not start. He said that he would call a meeting of the contractors on Mar 3 and if they fail to reply positively, their licensees would be forfeited. Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak was present.

Udupi, Feb 16: A man, who was trapped in 15-feet-deep hole following a landslide during borwell digging work at a remote area in the coastal district, was finally rescued after a prolonged effort today.

The man, identified as Rohit, suffered minor injuries in the incident.

The incident took place at Maravanthe village near Baindur in Udupi district.

Rohit was trapped when the land around borewell was being dug collapsed suddenly. It took around six hours for the rescue workers to rescue him.

Mangaluru, July 29: Justifying the transfer of Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, district in-charge minister Kota Shrinivas Poojari has accused Mangaluru MLA U T Khader of politicizing the issue. 

The IAS officer was transferred by the Karnataka government on July 28, a day after a saffron activist issued a death threat against her on social media after she warned of legal action against the miscreants who attack cattle traders.

Condemning the development, Mr Khader had tweeted that the state government has punished the deputy commissioner instead of punishing the culprit, who issued death threat.

Responding to Mr Khader’s tweet, Mr Poojari said that the transfer of the officer was on administrative ground. “It is unfortunate that Khader politicized a transfer carried out by the government on administrative ground. This is not Khader’s time to protect any accused,” tweeted Mr Poojari. 

It is worth mentioning here that Mr Khader was the district in-charge minister of Dakshina Kannada before Mr Poojari taking over the position. 

Meanwhile, police has arrested a person in connection with the death threat against the IAS officer.

Dubai, May 18: An Indian working in a mining company in the UAE has become the latest expatriate to have lost his job for hate-filled social media posts targeting Islam and Muslims.

Brajkishore Gupta was fired without notice for calling Indian Muslims 'coronavirus spreaders' and hailing the Delhi violence as 'divine justice' in his Facebook posts.

Gupta, who is from Chapra, Bihar, was employed by Stevin Rock, a mining company headquartered in Ras Al Khaimah city.

"This isolated incident involving a junior employee was investigated and dealt with immediately resulting in the termination without notice of this person's employment with Stevin Rock," said the company's business development and exploration manager Jean-Francois Milian.

"Our company policy supports the direction of the UAE government in promoting tolerance and equality and strongly renouncing racism and discrimination and we have sent communications to all of our employees irrespective of their religious or ethnic background reminding them that any such behaviour is unacceptable and will lead to immediate dismissal," Milian was quoted as saying in the report.

Three Indians based in the UAE were either fired or suspended from their jobs for "Islamophobic" posts on social media early this month.

On April 20, India's ambassador to the UAE Pavan Kapoor had warned Indian expatriates against such behaviour.

"India and UAE share the value of non-discrimination on any grounds. Discrimination is against our moral fabric and the Rule of law. Indian nationals in the UAE should always remember this," he said in a tweet.

Last month, Sharjah-based businessman Sohan Roy had to apologise for "unintentionally hurting religious sentiments" through his poem, which alluded to a Muslim religious group.

In March, chef Trilok Singh was fired from a restaurant in Dubai for an online threat against a student in Delhi over her views on the Citizenship Amendment Act.
