Udupi’s Amasebailu becomes Karnataka’s first Solar village

Udupi, Jun 11: With all the houses in Amasebailu village in Kundapura taluk of Udupi district, connected with the Solar power, has the distinction of the first ever Solar Gram Panchayat in Karnataka.

Speaking after inaugurating the Solar Village Project, a joint initiative of the Amasebailu Charitable Trust, Dharmasthala Rual Development Project, Karnataka Bank Limited, and Amasebailu Grama on Tuesday, Dharmadhikari of the Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara temple Veerendra Heggade, said that “The use of the Solar Energy which is in abundance will solve the energy crisis and thereby accelerate the country’s economic growth".

Maintaining that there is an urgent need to exploit the potential of the solar energy, he exhorted the people of the village to make best use of it.

Amasebailu Charitable Trust president A G Kodgi said: “The entire project of illuminating Amasebailu with solar lamps was implemented at a total cost of Rs 2.13 crore. As the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) failed to keep its promise of meeting 30% of the cost of the project, the Trust and government bore the additional cost. About 1,858 houses have solar lamps in the gram panchayat.”

As per the agreement with Selco, solar lamps have a guarantee up to five years. Faulty lamps will be replaced during the guarantee period.

Mangaluru, Apr 18: Mangaluru Police have registered a case against two foreign nationals, who were under home quarantine in Kodailbail, for allegedly spitting in the lift of their apartment building on Friday.

The two men, along with three of their roommates, have now been sent to a quarantine facility.

The residents of the residential complex have mentioned in their complaint that they have the CCTV footage of the two spitting in the lift.
Further investigation in the case is underway.

Bengaluru, Mar 28: Karnataka has reported 10 new positive cases of COVID-19 between 5 pm yesterday and 8 am today, taking the tally to 74 in the state.

"Ten new COVID-19 cases have been reported between 5 pm yesterday and 8 am today, taking the total number to 74 in Karnataka, which includes three deaths and five cured/discharged persons," said the State Health Department on Saturday.

The total number of active COVID-19 cases in the country has climbed to 873, including 78 cured, discharged and migrated cases and 19 deaths, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday.

The Centre’s step-motherly attitude towards Kannadigas stranded in the Gulf countries in general and Saudi Arabia in particular has prompted the Kannadigas to resort social media campaign once again.

A couple of weeks ago, Twitterati had launched a campaigned to bring back Kannadidags stranded in Saudi Arabia. A variation of the hashtag #SaudiKannadigasNeedFlights trended today. 

Trend Setters India, which has taken the twitter campaign initiative, had urged the Kannadigas around the world to join the twitter storm at 4 p.m. IST on June 15, to exert pressure on the authorities concerned. Around 7 p.m. the hashtag began trending with thousands of tweets.

Millions of Kannadigas are working in Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. They contribute greatly to the Indian economy.

Even though government of India has launched Vande Bharat Mission for the repatriation of Indians stranded across the world, it has operated only a few flights from Saudi Arabia to Karnataka so far. Thousands of Kannadigas including pregnant women, elderly people, those who have lost jobs and those who need emergency medical care are still waiting for repatriation flights from Saudi Arabia to Mangaluru and Bengaluru.
